An excellent video!!! I now know that my engine (with no I.D. tag present) is a B43G 16hp machine.. Mine has breaker points, something that the P218's did away with... And a stock bore of 3.250" and a stroke of 2.625"... Mine has no lugs for a starter on the R/H cylinder, but it uses lugs and a starter mount plate that are attached to the oil pan assembly.... This video was a BIG help to I.D. the machine that I bought at a garage sale... Thanks again!!!

Congrats on picking one up at a garage sale. The couple times I have tried to do that they have always been Grade A collector prices!! Glad the video helped.

I'm going to look at a 317 today that the seller says has the retro-fit Onan P-218. This was a very helpful video to help me determine if he's right and not the original Kohler Series I. The Kohler had bad issues with lubrication.
@mmrbeef6 жыл бұрын
Glad it helped. Hopefully you were about to get the 317 w/ Onan. The 317's with Series II Kohlers or the Onans are workhorses.

I just bought a 318 with a stuck engine. It is the B43G. It is being delivered in an hour. I’m excited. Before I know more about the engine condition I’ll go through the steps of checking the oil, removing plugs and doing short cranks (see if it was hydro-locked), and just checking out how the previous owner maintained it. I will then probably put some Marvel Mystery oil in and soak the pistons. Any additional recommendations?

Hi. Fantastic videos of you work on the 318s and Onan engines. I've been reassembling a late 1989 318 that I received with the engine removed and mostly torn apart. Your videos of tearing down and rebuilding the Onan engine have been invaluable to me. I've only worked on the B43G engines so I have a question about the routing of the starter power cable from the starter solenoid. Is the routing in this video accurate? Thanks for all your help.

Hi mmrbeef, Just watched your video June 11, 2015 about B43G and P218G engine differences. Can you tell me where solenoid on the B43G was mounted on the JD 318. Because of repeated starter loosening resulting in ring gear damage, I change out my origin P218G oil pan to the B43-48G oil pan. Now need to figure out what kind of solenoid to purchase for the new B43-48G starter and where is the best or most convenient place to mount the solenoid. can you advise? I will appreciate any assistant you can provide. Happy 4th!!!

Bought a Case 446 with an Onan B43 engine, what are some "bolt in and go" compatible engines I could use in the 446.

Where the hell can I get aftermarket parts for the p218g? I need a stator, rotor and ignition control module I just can't bring my self to spend over 400$ for all 3 for oem from Cummins
@mmrbeef3 ай бұрын
About the best place to get them is used on eBay. Stators are typically cheap, ignition and rotors used to be $100 used.

I'm thinking about buying a 318 that's a 1992. Is the Onan a good engine? Also is it hard to find parts for it?

Why does the crankcase need a breather? I’ve always been wondering
@gunks_getaway7 жыл бұрын
the relay mounted on the side is a NECESSARY option for hard starting. they are known to only click when starting. this kit fixes that problem permanently.
@mmrbeef7 жыл бұрын
Correct it is a helpful addition. However, I have also found a through cleaning of all the connections in the electrical system plus a double check of all the grounds works wonders for the poor starter performance. It would fix the problem permanently as long as there are halfway decent ground connections. The grounds always seem to be the problem on these machine for some reason.

the key switch contacts do not carry enough current to hold the starting relay in after a few years. I do agree that Maintenance is important.

I have a 87 John Deere 318 with the p218g my problem I have is the starter mounting on the cylinder are broke . Will the pan from a b48g fit my engine and is that the one that has the starter mount on the oil pan . Thanks for any help
@mmrbeef6 жыл бұрын
Yes, an oil pan from a B43 with the starter mount will fit on a P218. You will need to make sure you have the correct starter (the housing is a bit different) or change it over to the bendix style starter with the solenoid under the instrument panel.

Is there any difference in the carburetor from the b43g ?
@mmrbeef4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the carbs between the engines do differ. The main differences are in the Venturi (throat of the carb) and the main jet (which you cannot see without some disassembly).

Is a 318 worth getting without the motor then repower it if the rest is in good shape and once done will it hold its value.

I have a Gehl 2500 Hydra Cat with a 24 hp Onan Performer engine. The engine is the P218G as depicted in your video. I resurrected this old skid loader from a farm grove. In the process, the engine has received a new coil, spark plugs, spark plug wires, filters etc. The engine starts fine (even in very cold conditions) and runs great until it reaches operating temperature. Once it fully warms up the engine bogs (cuts) out. I removed the air cleaner and observed a fuel spay inside the carburetor when the bogging takes place. A small black puff of exhaust occurs when this spray of unneeded fuel occurs. I'm curious as to why this occurs and what the fix my be. The carburetor has never been rebuilt, but it has received a new needle and float.

i have a performer 20 sxl onan with no spark turns over but when i put my spark tester on i get no spark any sugestions for me thx

Could be anything from a bad key switch, bad coil, or even a pick up. If you can test each component individually.

Can you put a p218a in the place of p43g
@mmrbeef3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can use a P218 in place of a B43G. You will need the correct driveshaft and there are a couple of small wiring changes that will need to be made. Other than that, a P218 will bolt right in. To avoid the wiring changes, use your B43G oil pan and starter.

Yes, finding a B43G is not uncommon in newer units. The two engines are interchangeable with the units with some realistically east modifications.

Is one engine more reliable than the other?
@mmrbeef7 жыл бұрын
They are both very reliable engines. They should go 1000-2000 hrs with only good maintenance practices. With poor maintenance they will last less than 1000 hrs.

Another difference for the 2 is the price for parts. In canada, P-Series parts are easy to find Rebuild kits go for around 500 dollars. The B-Series engines have very pricey parts, as a carburetor rebuild kit costs 2000 in canada 😂😂😂
@mmrbeef9 ай бұрын
Wow, that’s a big difference for parts. For the most part B series engines are worth less in parts than P series, but I mostly know the used parts market.
@Chasesrepairshop9 ай бұрын
@mmrbeef yeah I don't know why. All the guys from the US seem to mark up prices because that's the only way we can get parts. The P series parts are cheaper because there's a person selling them cheap.
