John Deere 400 60 Inch Deck Removal

It's Spring and time to till the garden. So that means removing the John Deere 400's mower deck. Removal is a pain is the rump to say the least.

I have a 1976 John Deere 400 with the original engine and all 4 attachments, i love it to death lol, also dont take off that JD logo on the front because they're fairly rare :) great video looks great

the kohler motor is cast-iron, just an FYI, versus aluminum, so it is worth the extra money over the Honda motor

Not sure those older decks are meant to be driven over with the shields on. You have yours off so your probably ok. Otherwise that 1,000 lb machine would squash the covers.

Your back deck wheels should turn side ways to make it easier to remove from under tractor ft deck wheels may turn too use to be a I'd. Tech in ny.1990 Jim. If oe engine had exhaust out ft. The tra tor was bolt be for 1980. Ck I'd tag on dash tower below key switch -25000. Was 1976- 1980 I think

also, the original engine was rated at 19.9 because OSHA required less than 20hp for a small tractor, the torque on the Kohler is 53 ft-lbs, and the max RPM at 28hp or so is plenty for mowing or tilling.

I just slide my 60 deck out from under my 400. If u have to drive it up on bricks first for more clearance. Nice 400!

also, that mower deck is meant to be driven over backwards to get it off.

ya know hydraulics are affected by gravity. you could have lowered the deck without starting it.

Yeah, I still have it. I put an electric front PTO on it last year.
