John Deere 400: Part 1 - Purchase Review and Deck Removal

I am going to part out this 400 over the next several videos. Part 1 is the overview and removing the deck from the machine. My goal is to hit the high points of where one might have problems accessing different components.

Blades are out there you just have to keep an eye out for the proper blades. I have a snow blower for sale but typically shipping makes the cost too much.

One think I like about those old 400 series tractors, is the controls! Right hand steering and, occasionally, switching travel direction; left hand running the hydraulics. I also liked the 2-speed axle and the ability to brake either of the rear wheels! With my old (retired) 430, in low range, it would walk through snow drifts twice as high as the (single stage) sno-thower with no noticeable effect on the motor! Overall, I like my x748 better, but I miss the control that I had with that old 430...

That would be difficult. I don't have any good shipping services close by. The closest one would be....100-120km away. Let me ask around, I know there used to be someone in Indiana that loaded cargo containers going to the EU.

If the motor is tired or hurt do you plan to tear it down and build it up as a working spare for the other 400?

How many hours on it? Was it cracking on the deck by the wheel? What was the other concern?

I'm not sure yet. I don't have the space at the moment to take it apart. Once I get everything inspected and cleaned I will have a better idea then.

On one hand, it's a shame to part out a fairly nice rig, but on the other, I'm already looking at this 400 like a vulture. "Hmm, no cracks in the steering wheel..."

do you happen to have a electric lift cylinder for a 1973 john deere 110? mine broke and I need one for my snow thrower asap! I have a working motor. so if its the motor housing or the whole thing with a bad or without a motor I need one asap! TIA

I have two fully restored 400s. They’re a tank of a machine. I refreshed both engines this spring. I tore both machines down and fixed everything that was worn with new parts from Dealer. They are fun to tear-down and rebuild. Nice win for under $1,000! No.1 JD (Older version) with solid decals on the hood. Exhaust out the front. No.2 JD (Newer version) with striped decals on the hood. Exhaust out the side. No.1 Has mower, plow, rotor tiller and snowblower. No.2 Has OEM Johnson loader installed.
