I owned a 5020 back in the day ! I had a mechanic buddy open the pump up a little bit. It was rated at 156hp on the Dyno ! It was a beastly pulling machine ! I had to sell it when I got out of farming back in 1985 ! I miss that old machine !!

Spent many hours on the 5020, we had an umbrella with a very loud radio mounted on the finder. The farmer I worked for had one along with a JD 3010, 4020, 4630, and 8430. Brings back great memories watching your videos. Thanks, keep it up!

That brings back memories! Worked for my brother-in-law 40 years ago and put a lot of time in his 5020. It seemed bigger than this one but then again my memory isn't what it used to be. It was turbo charged, had an auxiliary fuel tank mounted on the front, had 3-point, a cab with AC that didn't work. The only heat I remember was what funneled up through the gear shift and hydraulic levers. Anything above 75F it got warm, above 80F you could roast a ham in it. Loved it on the 40-60F mornings, after the first round you could take your jacket off and only when it got above 65F or so you needed to start cracking the windows. Had balloon tires on the front. Ran a 3-point 28' cultivator. A 14'(I think, maybe 16') chisel plow. I also remember running a 9 bottom 3-point plow. Put a lot of hours in that tractor over a couple summers. Thank you for bringing back memories of my youth.

I've only ever driven a 4020 of this vintage, but I think these sychro range tractors are the best 2wd tractors ever made. The oils and coolant back then weren't what they are today, so things like Powershift and even turbos risked failure unless you were religious about maintenance. Guess what isn't at the top of your mind after 12 hours into a planting shift? About nothing other than food and sleep. These could be left out overnight and almost neglected and still run great until the season comes to a close. This coming from a Oliver fanboy.

I would have disked this at an angle instead of the same way that the rows were planted. I think it would cut the stalks up better that way. The only drawback is that it would have been a rougher ride that way. That is just my opinion though. Great video.

I enjoyed the video as always. Our farm had a 5010 Tractor with a Turbo so it generated at least the power of a 5020. We also had a 4520 and a 6030. I loved them all and never tired of hearing those Diesel engines.

Dad had a 1967 5020 that he put a turbo on and boosted it up to around 150HP. Great tractor. Oh and btw it actually had 4 reverse gears, the shifter console just wasn't notched out it get it into 3rd and 4th reverse.

Just watched a guy pay $500 bucks to ahem "freshen up" ahem what turned out to be a great Tractor. Cost around $800 bucks in parts but the labor part most (but not all) he did was truly amazing and goes to show when doing diesel small is indeed just as amazing as these monsters. Suddenly had a really efficient wood chopping and splitting operation as a result. $1200 bucks. Full hydraulics for lifting. PTO on the back for running a splitter. Tow the splitter and the wood wagon in the back plus carry the wood box to load the split wood into in front. Plus the front forks lifted trees to cut them up easier. Have a tree that needs a push to be felled in the right direction? Not a problem. Great stuff.

That is an interesting concept. Most would consider that disk to be too big for that tractor, however, it appears to be doing a great job at sizing the corn stalks. I think they're on to something.

Nice tractor but not enough ponies for that disc. That's why the tractor is running so slow. Drop a few sizes and pull the disc faster and better mix the soil and partially bury the debris for decomposing.

Yes, perhaps a bit much- certainly too much disk for worked ground but doing okay in the stalks. The woman and Mike were in third gear but I suspect the man is running in fourth gear. That's a fairly typical field speed back-in-the-day. Also, not a typical cap on the air stack FWIW. Would have had at least a bowl and often a screen.

Learned how to drive tractor on a 5020 when I was about 12 years old. We had one with a cab. You entered through a rear door, which was split in the middle. Could run with the top swung open. And by “air” you meant it had a fan with two speeds. I don’t recall A/C. Crazy to see it pulling a 32’ disk. In Montana soils, no way.

Back in the day Dad and I had a 5020 and an IH 1456. In routine work using the same implements the 14 56 would out work the 5020 i due to transmission speeds. However due to it's weight and lugging ability if you really wanted to pull a load hook the old 5020 to it. The JD had better responsive hydraulic system and the engine was a better lugger. You could lug the old 5020 losing RPM's and it would come back but if you lugged the 1456 down it was gone. You had to keep the RPM's up on the 1456, but with TA you usually were able to do that. Loved both tractors. The JD was comfortable and felt like you were riding a heavy indestructible machine, but seemed doggy since the IH just seemed to be more peppy and responsive. When you cracked the throttle something happened . We were faming in really hilly country in Minnesota and you could always spot the 1456 by the stream of black smoke rising up over the hill from the valley. The 5020 was harder to spot not nearly as much smoke. I don't remember the fuel consumption being much different. The JD was probably a little better on fuel. I do remember the JD would run about. 8 hours on a tank that I think either held 64 or 68 gallons.

Our neighbor had one that was set up just like this one except for 20.8 x 38 rubber on the rear. Some kids hot wired it and took it for a joy ride. It was hooked up to a 12 foot chisel plow used for clearing new ground of roots. They got it moving, then jumped off and let it run with plow in the ground through a recently cut over forest. Tore the up the tractor and plow. Busted up the rear end and other parts of the tractor so bad that the tractor was scrapped for parts.

I do like those big JD tractors. The biggest John Deere was a JD 9RX, don't remember what model, but it's one of the biggest JD tractors you can buy in Sweden. The biggest old JD i've seen was in fact this model. A JD 5020 at the local JD dealership. I'm glad i got that chance, cause this model is rare where i live, down in southern Sweden. It's one of my favorite JD models for sure

Yeah that harrow is a little big for the slick tires. I love a 5020 but this is a horrible showing of a fine workhorse. 4th gear at worst and up to 6th with an appropriate implement. Otherwise this is a waste of fuel. Still happy to see a classic tractor. Good job getting out there.
