We used one of those New Idea spreaders you spoke about early in the video. It was used primarily to support a dairy, some heifers, calves. It was 95 bu (I think?), with three beaters - two spike that broke up the load, one paddle beater at the rear to throw the material. It had a chain/bar mechanism on the floor to pull the load back toward the beaters. It was ground driven, one wheel driving the chain/bar unloading mechanism, the other wheel driving the beaters. Two hand levers at the front could be reached from the tractor seat, one for the chain/bar, the other for the beaters. The first one had notches to control the speed at which the chain would pull the load toward the beaters. The second one controlled the drape of a large chain link across a drive sprocket on the drive wheel. We pulled the spreader with a Case VA, about 28 hp. In the Winter, one very full load every day. It was loaded with a carrier on tracks - shovel the gutters out with shovel, run the carrier on the tracks behind the stanchions, then run on track out the door, over the spreader for dumping. If the fields were too wet, the manure had to be stockpiled, the pitched into the spreader in the Spring. The spreader was also used to support 500 chickens - 6-7 loads every few weeks. This was all hand loaded, forks, shovels. Yes, "cleaning out the barns" was my job - shovel the gutters clean, into the carrier, then out to the spreader.

I sure could've used that back in the sixties. I know all about handling manure by hand, first onto a flat deck wagon or a stone boat. Then fork it off in the field and go back for another taking a stook of 10 bales along back in. Horses were used to pull the wagon and stoneboat in those days. We never had any kind of a decent chore tractor.

Pretty cool to learn about what they made at the Welland Works, I've never been there, but apparently it's only a few minutes from the beach I go to in the summer. I think the Welland Works had something to do with the Dain company that Deere bought out in the 1900s, as well.

Box spreaders do not cover a bunch of ground. This farm had two spreaders covering this field as it was going into corn. Often on a larger field a farm will spread on it all winter in the off season to get it fertilized.

Iowa state motto: "IF YOU LOVE THE SMELL OF PIG SHIT, YOU'LL LOVE IOWA!" There is a study on how many tons of manure per animal herd that depicts the human population equivalent. The stats are staggering. The water quality in western Iowa is of great concern. Many farmers practice eco protection with buffer zones and bio-reactors. On our ranch the majority of our crop is hay. However, our ponds are taking a beating from our neighbor's run-off. Nitrates and phosphorus are the larger part of the problem. North of our ranch a farmer was busted for cow manure running off into a creek and pond due to the mass killing of fish. They're not worried about cancer in humans in Iowa. My wife just went through her third cancer surgery in as many years. Now nitrates are being blamed for head and neck cancers.
