Follow us on this first video of a two part series of us pulling a 900 hour Deere 6090 9.0L engine out of an 850j dozer. The engine has some serious blow by that looks to be caused by a lack of an air filter. Follow along to see what we find!

4/7/22; Clint great video 2day; always enjoy seeing you & crew 'wrench' a big Dozer project..this one is rebuild -out of frame-replacing pistons & liners due to extreme intake/abrasive-dusty-air-flow ruining metal-2-metal fit of piston rings-2-liners...causing massive 'blow-by' & loss of power & oil. Glad you bring us armchair viewers into yur very well equipped shop & combined with yur professional experience to remedy & restore 900 hour Dozer back to full utilization. Great to see.. & learn...just how this is done !🛠👍👍👍🧑‍🔧😊

My introduction into construction was in 78 , I was driving a tipper , you call them a dump truck , we were carting rock past a D9 ripping sand stone , me being nosey got to know the driver he told me his D9 had 9000 hrs on it and was due in for a new undercarriage motor was still good but years of ripping sand stone had buggered the running gear ..We got talking about the motor and stuff , all the machines were serviced every day ,, He told me in dusty conditions you could dust the motor in 20 minutes ,,

Aside from one of your other videos, I have never seen “blow by” from engine before…..not in my personal life or on any other KZbin channel. I’m aware of what it is….. But that’s insane how much smoke one of those Diesel engines can put out. It’s like air compressor hooked up to a fog machine. That’s nuts🤷🙂 I never guessed there would be that much volume.

Looks like someone was using the machine for a Mosquito Fogger. For the cost of a piece of equipment like that you would think that they would keep the maintenance and filters up to standard. I enjoy watching your videos. I think back to the days after I left the Navy and wish that I had went to Diesel Mechanic school. I would have enjoyed that type of work. As I ended up being a Operator in a chemical plant teaching OSHA regulations for safe operation of plants.

Any piece of heavy equipment you buy that is from the desert southwest is going to be filled with lots of dust. There is dust everywhere in these climates and no getting away from it. Some of the dust is so fine, it can get past air filters or really clog them up quickly; forcing frequent filter changes, particularly in the Spring Months during s dust storms. 900 hours run time is not much ; which suggests the dozer was probably not maintained properly in that climate.

Prety impressive Clint. You have all the right tools and the knowledge to use them. I'm curious as to where you accumulated all your knowledge on these machines. Did you work for a John Deere dealership? I missed where you said how the engine transfers power to the transmission. There were some plastic ears that transfers energy through the plastic coupling? What does it drive?

All internal combustion engines are motors. Not all motors are engines. Motors develop energy or impart motion.
@larrywalker7759
@larrywalker7759 2 жыл бұрын
Motors versus engines versus motors ad infinitum. I have listened to various arguments about terminology for over 50 years now. You seem to have given it some thought yourself so I would like to ask how you feel about the use of the term "steam engine". Everybody apparently is comfortable with saying "steam engine" and most seem to agree that a steam engine is a real thing. So, what makes a steam engine an "engine" instead of a "motor". Before making a knee jerk answer, consider that there are things called "air motors" and "hydraulic motors" and "electric motors". Do not confuse the term "steam engine" with "locomotive", just the term "steam engine". Opinions welcome.
@scottpowers6668
@scottpowers6668 2 жыл бұрын
@@larrywalker7759 I’m not making an argument that nothing else can be an engine, just that an internal combustion engine is still a motor a steam engine or an external combustion engine is also a motor. That’s all my friend.
@larrywalker7759
@larrywalker7759 2 жыл бұрын
@@scottpowers6668 And I am not arguing either way. I am just commenting about how some people do have arguments about whether it is correct or incorrect to refer to any I.C.E. as a motor versus engine. Some folks claim that if the device burns the fuel within itself to yield the motive energy, it is an engine (hence the I.C.E.) but if the motive energy is produced at a different location and then delivered to the device to be converted into motion, it is a motor. So why doesn't everybody buy engine oil instead of motor oil? And why is nobody saying steam motor? And these are just in the English language, I wonder if they have these debates in other languages.

Question about missing belly pans: Is it possible the OEM pans are replaced with blast resistant armored pans for military duty, and when they are done, they remove the armor leaving the bottom open? Or.. am just over-thinking it? .. that they just strip stuff like winches and rippers for re-use or separate sale, and the original pans just get lost in the shuffle.

So on these engines I can have them out in 60 min on a engine stand. It takes that long just to get the oil pan off in the machine, you have to remove front engine mount bolts anyway and jack the motor up just to get pan off. Then you are dealing with all the dirt and such trying to do an inframe and it takes longer and you will not get as clean of an job. So in this case its quicker and easier to pull the engine. Thanks for the comment and for watching
