Customer called in and sent me a video of his John Deere 9620RX transmission pouring oil out of the output shaft. I was hopeful it was just a seal... Boy it escalated quickly! #johndeere #johndeeretractor #johndeeretractorpower #transmissionrepair

If anyone is thinking about being a mechanic, this is how it's done! Love the attitude, the skill, the knowledge, the patience. You make this stuff look easy and heaven knows it's not! Well done. From the look of it, you're worth every penny they are paying you, and they probably should pay you more! I'd love to have you work on stuff for me but I don't have anything like a 9620 RX! Your talents would be wasted on my little 30 horse compact.

Pro tip for situations like this. Make what’s called a fit up bearing. Basically you use a sanding drum to sand the inside of the bearing until it will JUST slip on when cold. This would allow a temporary bearing which will allow it to function to get it on the truck and back to the shop. And then when it’s back to the shop that bearing is a slip fit so it comes off easily and get put in a specially labeled box that specifies it’s not for final installation. Those kinds of bearings are usually used by mechanics and axle builders that either don’t have ready access to a press or don’t want to be pressing bearings on and off while they figure out what shims it needs.
@liferunner6064

This! I have a box with a disgusting amount of fit up bearings in my shop that I'll bring with me in the service van whenever I have a hunch that we're looking at a bearing failure out in the field.

My 1st tractor driving experience was on a 1957 JD 720 Putt Putt named Ole John. That thing was powerful and wasn't anything it couldn't do on the farm I worked on. Sadly it was sold and later burned up in a barn fire. Lightening was the cause.Take a kid and start him out working with the demands of a farm & he / she will quickly recognize whats needed to do all the jobs. Teach them how to do repairs and they will never forget. I know I used to do the work, but things are far to complicated nowadays for these old hands. Thank God for young men like you Zeth, the equipment has a chance to be recycled back to work.

Most authorized repairers report back to deere anyways, so they are aware of what breaks are common on the machines. That being said, a single bearing failure on a new machine is probably not a design flaw, but manufacturing or installation error that happens very rarely.

Please get your shop to buy you a good induction bearing heater like the SKF induction heater TIH system or something like so you can safely install bearings and sprockets/gears and such. Hopefully you have a small generator on your service truck so you can run it. And have a demagnetizer as to not attract metals suspended in the oil. And a good pair of heat gloves. I was cringing as I watched you pull that tapered roller bearing out of the oil bath/turkey roaster pan with your channel locks.
