Great video and comparison! For those that don't understand why there was PTO combines all way up to 90s, well at one time manufacturers actually cared about customers. For example the Northern plains farmers used alot of PTO pull type combines on windrow crops. While it was a small market the manufacturers filled it. Another example wheat land tractors. Fixed front axles and no 3 pt. That would be crazy in row crop areas, but was very common in wheat belt. Now it's just "take it or leave it" manufacturers...........

Saw a 7720 at the dealer last week for air conditioning service...we were looking at a bunch of S680's which are now being turned over for the 780's...when it drove by us I couldn't believe how smooth this combine sounded. I steered our 6620 on my dad's lap when I was 10 or so.

The 7720 is one of the combine greats. The S700s make a 7720 look small now.

bigtractorpower hi I'm wondering if the 7721 is an economy model.
@truthandfreedom8856 ай бұрын
Very well explained. Slightly older models we had a 7701 In combination without John here 4620 tractor and also had combine and combination with a 6600 self-propelled and later on a 7700 self-propelled. Over half of the crops in the '70s were small green windowed crop so the pull type combines help knock out some acres that I greatly reduced cost. My uncle did convert a 15 ft flex at over to fit on a 7701 by moving the throat over to miss the hitch. But this is before land rollers and there we're too many troubles with a combine swallowing rocks. So it didn't even use it a full season for all the trouble he went through. I still enjoy driving the 7701 a lot

When he mentions buying a tractor to run the 7721 with the money saved buying a pull-type, he mentions the 4430 and 4450. In reality any tractor smaller than 150 PTO HP would be too small to handle that combine.

Would be interesting to see how the pull type functioned, how the unload was folded and engaged, header up and down, I assume the hitch swung, the cylinder speed adjustment,etc There must have been a series of switches to control theses functions?Maybe a monitor in the cab with warning lights and read outs?
@bigtractorpower7 жыл бұрын
I would like to film that. I would like to find more pull types to film. I think there are some IH models in use in Wisconsin.
@bdnmb68224 жыл бұрын
The control box mounted in the tractor cab had all the same functions as the sp. Unloading auger was an electric clutch, all the same shaft monitors as the sp. Cylinder speed and adjustment from the cab. Header was electric clutch. We ran two 7721’s on a couple 4840 jds. Power shift was handy but still nothing like have a hydrostatic. They were identical to the sp as far the header/ separating, grain tank auger etc went. Cheaper to buy and less to go wrong.
@TheStephenlarose2 жыл бұрын
@@bdnmb6822 My father farmed in Saskatchewan. In the 1990s he used a 4650 JD with Power Shift to run a 7721. A great combination. Before he used a 2775 Massey Ferguson, which was a piece of junk. One year the 2775 quit on him during harvest and he hooked up a 4020 to that combine...an interesting combination to say the least...

Love vid it make you think just cost of buying new pull type combine plus tractor would cost same as combine. If was farmer in 79 I would have brought pull type combine if I was harvesting wheat. I like to see International comparison of same, maybe even MF. In Australia in 79 you could have options of buying 3342 combine or 3342 pull type combine. I have find cost on MF combines but I think they were way cheaper then JD but not as big. Next model after 3342 were 860 which was same size as titan.

Yes 6 row was very common and 8 row was an option for the 7720. So far I have only filmed a 7720 with a 4 row. For this video showing the 7721 with 444 head this 7720 with the 4 row aided the story.

Small grain varieties improved and the need to swath small grains changed and direct cutting with a combine became more and more common. The last John Deere pull type was the 9501 in the early 1990’s. I have a 9501 combine featured in this video m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJywZWSEnbqHfa8
