It's crazy to think how someone thought up all of those functions back then 😎👍 Nice job on the fabrication, Wendell 🔧

Thanks Zane. This one didn't take much to make it better but I still have to eliminate the chain down the center. Its going to get two 3/8x2 flat irons from the top link to mid frame to minimize the stress on the weaker center portion of the planter. That was part of the makeshift 3 pt change years ago. I told the Missus a few hours ago that its about the time you got to get out on the roads. Are you expecting to have to go out yet tonight ??

Up until now I never gave a thought on how a corn planter worked. I will say your explanation was very informative. Enjoyed your video.

This one is a bit different from the old one back home for sure. But they all do basically the same thing, just in a different manner. We were lucky the Much Older Brother has a selection of the drive chain to get the parts to drive all the hoppers. Thanks for watching.

I still have to eliminate the makeshift chain. I'm going to replace it with two 3/8 x 2 flat irons from the top of the upper link connection to the mid frame section Leonard. That way it won't have any undue stress on the weak joint the way it is now.

Thanks, I try to keep 'em in pretty good shape. I'm not a pro but I have a good enough technique for home shops and farmers. Others are much better at it than I am though. This is one of my first videos on you tube: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pX3UdaGplJ2fjKs if you've an interest.

It was pretty much all there except for the missing drive chain too. It took a bit of wire wheel and WD40 to make all the parts go in and out and up and down. The end result is very acceptable Matt. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for sharing buddy we never had a corn planter but we had a grain seeder remember riding on the back of that with Dad we always planted oats there was a compartment for grain and one for the grass seed I remember the big lever on the back that’s how you would engage it . The only planter that I sat on was back when I worked in the tobacco fields in Prince Edward Island I was Fifteen the first year I went there to pick tobacco and went back in the spring to plant and then we stayed and worked building a barn and was suppose to stay until the fall and pick tobacco again but I came home and went to work for coop in the feed mill a couple years later they were looking for a drive for the bulk feed truck and that’s where it all began my truck driving career lol sorry for the long winded story take care and have a great week

Hey Tom, good story and you don't ever have to apologize for a long replay. Oats is one crop we never messes with but I'm assuming it was a grain drill you rode to sow it with. If so I rode many a mile on our old Massey Harris 10 foot grain drill as well. Walking back and forth on the rear step to knock a dirt clod loose from the shoe and to keep an eye on the fertilizer and grain hoppers. Tobacco is another item I have virtually NO knowledge of. So between me and you we've been around the block a time of two....LOL

There seems to be quite a few available on Marketplace. I even have one in my front yard but it too far gone to be good for anything other than a flower pot holder. Its an IH so most all the parts will not interchange. Well, the wheels might. Ain't quite a buzz saw but its still an old farm tool. All is good. Thanks Denis for watching another one.

I have my Great Uncle's JD 999 planter that he converted to 3 point back in 1948, when he bought the 8N, his first tractor. Dad's 999, that my grandfather also used, is still in the barn with a shortened tongue so Dad could pull it with the CA Allis. I believe, that fertilizer attachment may be a generation or two newer than the planter. Somewhere around the farm, is a roll of wire to run the trip on those planters for 'check row planting', and I have 2 sets of stakes for that wire.
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 18 күн бұрын
We never had to use the trip wire set up on our old one back home, but the Much Older Brother has our old roll of it. The fertilizer hoppers are in a lot better shape, but I was thinking its because the planter was always stored under roof and kept blown out. I am not a JD guy, so I don't really know for sure though.

They might have used chain for the top-link. I have seen that done more than a few times. We never had a corn or grain planter like this. Most of our crops were transplanted tomatoes, peppers and eggplant. That transplanter was a two row and seats for two people on each row putting plants in the arms that placed them in the ground. It moved a lot slower than any seed planter. I only rode on it a couple times when it was turning around. That was a wild ride. The marker arms were right next to the person on the outer seat and once the planter threw me sideways and I hit my head on the raised marker. I never needed to do that ride again. 😂😂😂
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 18 күн бұрын
Well now, a transplanter is something I've only seen in videos. I don't think it'd be a good day for me either to have to work one of them. Corn was all we row planted, the rest was all drilled and cultipacked....milo, soybeans, wheat, barley. Thanks for tuning in for another one my friend.
