John Deere load shaft seals

couple pointers that I do or look for when doing seals
funny how 25 years ago load shaft seals was a big job, pulling pins could tie up a long time. now it's an hour and your done!

Yeah you're 25 years ago when I was young and learning it was a half a day project. Fight them arms off seem like the bushings wouldn't come out.

Thanks for the tip on the seals. I have always struggled getting them inside like that. 🤦‍♂️ hot water. I have used the freezer to get things cold to help.

I did this job over a year ago on a 4040. Was amazed JD only asked just over $100 for the new shaft. Thought it would be more.

Putting the oring and Teflon in? There's not much to show, but I can do it again next load shaft we do. Put Teflon in hot water, and it gets back to shape easier. Push one side of the circle in to make it smaller diameter, put it in and take your fing and get it back to shape.

I tried to save some money by cleaning a little bit of rust off the shaft with emery cloth.. it cleaned up nicely, I put new seals in with the Old Shaft. …a week later i hadta do it all over to put a New shaft in because it wouldnt seal on the old shaft….i didnt save Any Money and wasted alot of time that i didnt have to spare….😂😂😂

So if a person has to replace the bushings, how do get them out? I've found the seals are the easy part to replace.

I use the old load shaft to hit the bushings and a 10 lb mall. Usually come right out. Like a bearing race if they are stubborn a weld bead inside the bushing and allow to cool will shrink them and they should pop out. New ones I use a 10lb mall to drive them in, on 30 inch spacing tractors I would use a porta power, make darn sure you go in square, an hour in the freezer ahead of time wouldn't hurt

You can buy a tool that folds up the seals for installation. Pretty inexpensive on Amazon.

My parts list has the option for oversized bushings it says use with case marked 0520 where to find this

Somewhere on the trans case. I know not much help, haven't looked for a case number in a long time. What tractor are you working on? Try to measure bushings before taking out. You might be able to just put new orings/seals in.

I explained thoroughly how to put the seal in the bushing. Very hard to be able to get a camera into see it when I need both hands to put in seals
