WOW!! Thanks for posting! I've watched several videos where they are changing the shaft and bushings....when all they needed to do was change the seals!

That was good knowledge. Glad JD just reached an agreement on employees too.

Hi James and Melinda; I did the exact same job on our U.S.A built 1974 JD 4230 tractor this summer. It has the shaft going through the same spot. Like you say not a great idea. We have a 1964 JD 3020 that’s built the same way. Instead of the 3 point hitch arms connecting there, they have a big piece of cast steel where the draw bar attaches to. All of a sudden one day you find a big puddle underneath. Not good !!! I really enjoyed our conversation yesterday. If you ever need anything or have a question don’t hesitate just give me call. And great job with the videos, and yes farmers are the life blood of our world. More people need to understand all what farmers do for them. Take care and hope to see both of you in the Philippines. Think the company was thinking about providing work for their service engineers. Dread to think how much the charge would be, plus refilling with fluid😮😮!! Great job sir James.

The shaft goes right through the transmission because it senses the draft or pulling force from the implement. Its call lower link sensing. The shaft moves depending on load on the implement there is a sencing system inside measuring that movement which in turn self adjusts the hydraulics to lift or lower automaticaly giving weight transfer onto.the back wheels to increace grip

this smaller tractor does not have that the same as the larger units which I mentioned that in the end of the video. This tractor does not have that setup. I have the John Deere breakdown on it also.

Often times the shaft has wear as well. I replaced all the bushings,seals and the shaft. Twist the seal into a figure 8 and it pop's right in. Apply lubricant prior to sliding the shaft back in position.
@raymondcamp82128 ай бұрын
You are correct. He will get to do this again soon
@raymondcamp82128 ай бұрын
How soon depends on use. Heavy loads on lift shortens the life. I have never changed one that the bushings and shaft weren't egged shaped. Take a picture and blow it up. You are correct

Easiest way is grab seal top and bottom push one side to the other side squeezing down making seal smaller. Set in groove on the round side then with a nail set or something push other side over into groove. Easy Peasy

We used to put this type seal in a cup of boiling hot water it soft it up goes in way easier
@davidlockhart92003 жыл бұрын
Next time put the seals in hot water first to soften them. They will go in easy with less likelyhood of damage

Didn't read all comments here - so maybe there was already somebody explaining that: The is a GOOD RESON for this design (not the "service ingeneers busy...."). This shaft is part of the MECHANICAL DRAFT CONTROL SYSTEM. As this system is INSIDE housing of course also this shaft needs to go THROUGH the housing... You can google "draft control" if you want to read more. A draft link system is much more accurate as a center top link controlled system - so - the design as such makes sense - maybe the sealing could have been designed better ;-) Pardon my writing - it is not my "mother tough"...

Agree, seems ridiculous to put two seemingly unnecessary holes at the bottom of a reservoir.

Dang that sucks especially when you have use John Deere hydraulic oil, because if you don’t an aftermarket oil messes up the seal, which they sale aftermarket seals and you can use a cheaper hydraulic oil
@JWDREAM-d3x3 жыл бұрын
Yes sir those mechanical seals can be a little aggravating to get into place . I bet those where probably the OEM seals from factory 🏭. The price didn't sound to bad . To be a JD part . That's what I did for a living sold all kinds of industrial power drive parts . Like Bearings seals electric motors ,gearboxes etc anything it took to move something or make it Roll .pullys belts sprockets chains bushings, shafts anything basically . You did a excellent job installing that ought to last you years & years 👏. I bet that seal was metric & probably made for deere by SKF or Nachi. KEEP ON ROCKING IN THE FREE WORLD 🌎 PEACE OUT BRO ✌ SALAMAT

Thanks for trying to help but you wasted your time. I have done this several times and the bushings and shaft wear egg shaped if you don't change the shaft and bushings with the seals it will leak again soon. New shaft kit cost about 140.00 bucks . Watch video on changing shaft it's easy. Good luck
