Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture.
With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

We lost my sister to a grain bin accident. We were unloading corn and her and my cousin we in there to make sure the other is safe but when you have teenage kids you get to messing around. There were standing in the middle and seeing how far they could go down and get back out. Grain is unbelievably heavy and just having your ankles covered is tough to pull out of. Sadly she went too far and could not get herself out and by the time they got the system shut down only the top tips if her fingers were sticking out. She was burred in corn and the red-dog was going into her lungs and after 45 min of trying to get her out they finally did but she lost consciousness about 15 min before that. The bin was huge and its like a liquid the more you shovel away it just gets replaced by more grain. They tried to bust open the side of the bin but the corrugated steel was designed to resist . I have begged that there should be a harness system in every bin since and all bins should have an emergency cutoff to power inside the bins. Such a tragic loss and I miss my sister every day. I was 14 (41 now) at the point in time and she was 16. It can happen to anyone. Please if your bin does not have a safety harness ADD one! It can save your life I don't understand why its not mandatory

Zach, great tutorial on grain bin safety. Many people hear about the accidents...but they have no idea what the dangers are. Thanks for explaining it. My uncle, whose father was born in 1865, used lots of converted, horse drawn equipment. He did small patches of grain, so, he kept a 1930s thrasher...which I helped use. I was at the farm for a week helping him get things ready to do a 20 actress patch of orchard grass. I was all over that thrasher...which hadn't been used for years. We chased out the bumblebees, pulled out the nests, cleaned her up, and put on the belts. He tested it with all the covers off...it was so amazing to me. That was 45 years ago. Another youtuber had plates off, and opened up for an issue. I was amazed how much a modern combine was like that, today, a 85 year old piece of equipment was similar. Love your vlogs...wonderful.

K J it is about $ and gov regulation. We all care about emissions, but with China and other Eastern countries still in the 80’s when it comes to emissions, the Tier4 Final regulations in US & EU are like having one corner of a room non smoking but the rest of the room is free to burn one. I can only hope that someday the DEF jug will create the attention that plastic drink straws do. Tier4 is complete hypocrisy.

My grandpa is reckless and last year he stepped on the wrong side of our 10 inch sweep auger in our 60 foot bin to break a column of beans down and slipped and fell into the auger...I was in the semi unloading and didn’t hear him yell but saw the unload belts smoking because his foot locked everything up.....luckily I was able to shut everything down and get him out and to the emergency room.....and thankfully he has made a full recovery. Everyone use your heads....be safe like he says....

I know your kids are getting an education of a lifetime by living on the farm. Now if we could teach the rest of the nation to live like our rural areas we would be fine.

Hey! I'm an engine development engineer. The purpose of DEF is to reduce oxides of nitrogen. Since a diesel burns non-homogenously in the combustion chamber, the lean portions produce NOx or oxides of nitrogen. The only way to reduce them is to inject DEF into the exhaust, which is urea and a few other things. The urea reacts with the oxides of nitrogen (I don't know the exact chemical reaction, I'm sure google can tell you), and allows a catalyst to remove and treat the exhaust, this reduces the tail pipe emanations of NOx. Gasoline engines will create NOx as well, if you operate them lean, but since combustion is homogenous, running rich or stoich reduces NOx significantly. Anyway, DEF is an emissions thing only, the engine doesn't need it to run. So, a lot of modern diesel vehicles have software that will idle the vehicle if it runs out of DEF.

Great video Zach, that combine is pretty bad ass. On the subject of diesel exhaust fluid, I am an equipment mechanic myself and I deal with it pretty regularly. I grew up around old-school equipment and black smoke and good old diesel engines and I love them. But I see a lot of comments and hear about people talking about how DEF is a government scam etc. The reality is DEF gets injected into an oxidizer before the particulate filter and it causes a chemical reaction. It does work. Also a lot of people complain about how the new technology is nothing but problems. Well in the early 80s when electronic fuel injection first came around that was nothing but problems and everyone wanted to stick with their carburetors. Now most people under the age of 30 don’t even know what a carburetor is lol. I’m not saying the new emissions technology is the best thing since sliced bread, I’m just saying it’s not something that is going away anytime soon so we might as well be educated about it, and any logical human being would want to have clean air for the future generations

My dad drove a truck for one of our local farmers and I enjoyed every second I got to spend out there. I'm nearly 28 now and your videos enlighten me on what it truly means to be a farmer and I hope that one day when I retire from the USAF, that I can become a Farmhand and embrace the passion I've longed for my whole life. I believe that most of farm size units like MF, I got to say your farms in the US are B.I.G, will use containers atleast 1000l refilled with the same time as diesel containers. 2-4 tractors, few semi sized trucks, pick-up trucks and combines, when they all are upgraded, no idea to use little jugs to refill; big DEF containers like diesel and smaller pickup towed container trailers to distribute/refill machines on the field when working.
@dedduck87
@dedduck87 4 жыл бұрын
@@grantdubridge7995 it does say on the jugs do not refill. The companies obviously want you to keep buying the jugs lol I drive a diesel and manufacturer states they are to be discarded and not refilled. Much cheaper to buy DEF from a pump instead of individual boxes so people do refill to save some coin but if they don't have a pump near them they obviously chuck em.

Truck mechanic here. DEF does not contain nitrogen, but it reduces Nitrogen oxide emissions in the exhaust. It contains urea. It gets injected into the exhaust after the Diesel particulate filter or DPF and before the selective catalyst reduction element or SCR. And yes, it stinks.

Dielectric grease can be a "catch 22" with dirt and how often the connector is left open to the elements. It's not a bad idea as I've used it on light bulb sockets, trailer wiring connectors... to fix and prevent corrosion those are also not multiple contacts side by side. I think this is why Deere probably would recommend to leave it dry with no dielectric grease. But if very careful I would be willing to put a little tiny bit inside the female terminals with a small flat blade screwdriver... especially on the contact for the conductor(s) that is the culprit. More is not always better... "that is what she said" lol
