It's a good mower, engine is bullet proof, I've had my SST15 since 2003. The only things are like he said, mowing on hills is tough, the front end wants to head down the hill & the finicky vacuum steering actuators, I've replaced the twice and I think they're failing again. I'll try cleaning the ceramic filters first.

One thing most people missed was the rear weight pack and dolly wheel which helped a lot on slopes lawns but not marketed very well

Bought mine in 2010 from a pawn shop for $1200. Works great on level/slightly sloped ground. Threw the hood away. 350 hours and who needs revers e steering anyway?

John Deere hoods are one of the biggest scams I've ever seen. Cheap plastic and 300 bucks for a replacement

It was definitely an oddity. Some people loved them and wish they still made them, but they just never really took off and became a popular choice.

These were the worst hoods ever! They would break if you looked at them the wrong way! LOL! And you are right, as soon as you put a new one on it would be broken in no time.
