After a fun Mystery Box giveaway, I'm happy to announce my newest project which happens to be a John Deere 855 Compact Tractor!
From my last video, you were able to identify that this tractor has a 3 cylinder Yanmar diesel engine that came in 100 parts within two different boxes. More on this engine in a future video!
In today's video, I'll give you a quick overview of this neat tractor, share the attachments that came with it and talk more about the title of this video!
This tractor was a steal-of-a-deal...but there is still a lot of work to do and I hope I can share my knowledge with you when it comes to diesel engines and bigger tractors in general. Fingers crossed I can get this John deere repaired so it will live a couple more years!
If this video was helpful, please give it a "thumbs up", comment if you have any questions and consider subscribing.

This will be interesting to follow. As an owner of many older machines I have some experience with this predicament. This particular situation will be interesting to see how valid the shops reason was for leaving the owner with the result. In fairness, he could have been warned of this outcome. Been there! My experience says the beauty of Yanmar is the worldwide serviceability and availability of parts. In the third world this is not old. “ “Bush mechanics” might be required. Good luck and have fun!

Thanks David, I will try my best to share everything I do on this JD855. It's nice to keep older machines going especially for hobby use and it's not even bad to tinker around when something doesn't work. When I review the engine in an upcoming video I will share more about the back-story. I do not know exactly what was said before they took it apart, but I do know the aftermath and what both the parties told me (haha)! I agree with you, Yanmar parts are readily available and in many countries a tractor like this is put to work on a daily basis. It will be fun to rebuild this engine and get this tractor up and running again. Thank you for your words, I appreciate it. Best regards -Andreas

Thanks, Nikola! It will be a fun project and I can't wait to work on the 3cyl. diesel engine! The deck was always stored indoors and the gentleman even had the spindles rebuilt (at least what he said). So I'll see how good it works once the JD 855 is up and running. Stay tuned - Andreas

Wow, glad I found this. I have an 855 that got "dusted" by the previous owner. I am a retired Tech and will be pulling and rebuilding mine as a winter project. Nice to see a series of vids to tag along on. Biggest issue I will face here locally is going to be the machine shop backlog. Thanks again for what promises to be a very helpful series of vids.

Hi there! It's very unfortunate to hear that you have issues with your John Deere 855 too...but with a littel bit of effort and investment, you might be able to bright it back to life this winter. If you have any questions along your disassembly or rebuild, feel free to reach out! I will try to help as best I can. You want a good machine shop for your engine block to make sure all surfaces are measured and repaired accordingly. After that everything should go back together like LEGO and you'll have a nice running tractor (once again). Regards Andreas

No trying to be a pain. But i would not attach that mower deck by driving over it with the front tires. That model is designed for the deck to be slid in from the side.

Looks like another good project. I think as you bought it, in parts with engine disassembled, It would be worth somewhere around $2500. Running condition I would think this could be worth as much as $12-15,000. Best of luck with your newest rebuild!

I hope there is not much wrong except for the engine, so it might be an easy fix! I agree with your statement, it is a nice package deal and the loader itself holds quite a bit of value. If a tractor does not run, you never know what is really wrong!...so the attachments bring the price up. I would be happy if the resell value is that high, but this one would be great to keep. I don't think I'll find a deal this good anytime soon. I'll reveal the price in an upcoming video. Thanks Kevin, I hope to share quality content on this rebuild. Best regards -Andreas

I've seen JD do this to people before. I bought a 420 and the diesel 430 with mower decks, a clamshell bagger trailer and a plow blade all for 2k. It wasn't that they possibly could not fix them it is that they would not. I traded the smaller deck for a jd60 front end loader for the 420. Love that loader!. I still have the 72" deck like yours. I've never used it but I'm hoping you'll go through yours and I can watch. I had trouble sourcing some parts for a kubota b7100 I restored but only the body... the engine is a basic D750. There were lots of 855s so I bet you'll get it fixed. If not, the 3 cylinder engines are in everything. I'd say billions of those lil buggers are out here. Sweet tractor if you get it going. It always nice to see someone else making these old little tractors and such things work again. Thank you for sharing!

Did you buy your 420 & 430 with all your attachments directly from the JD dealer?! If so, you got an amazing deal and I have a good feeling you wont be getting rid of them anytime soon! Your loader alone is worth a lot and what you can get done with it, is actually amazing when it's equipped with a JD420. I've already rebuilt the spindles on the 72" mower deck, as I didn't think I should share it...now when I read your comment, I should have. I will still paint it and assembly everything, but there is little to do now, since the major components are rebuilt. I've never worked on a Kubota tractor before, but I have only heard good things about them. If I find a deal one day, I'll pick one up haha. The only thing I've worked on that was Kubota, were 2x V2203 (4cyl. diesel engines) which I rebuilt for two different skid steers. Very nice engines in my opinion. That is correct, 3 cylinder diesel engines are in various pieces of equipment and even if I wouldn't have rebuilt this Yanmar engine, I could have found a used one pretty quickly. I'm glad I can work on a newer tractor like this and share my experience and journey through videos. I hope you enjoy them and I should really try to film everything I do, so nothing gets left out. Regards Andreas

@@WorkshopRebuild yes I bought the 420 and 430 with decks and other items except the loader. I got a 54 and a 72 inch deck with the mowers, I traded the 54 for the loader! I've only ever seen one loader for sale and it was 3500$. I would love to have the frame mount for the 430. The 420 and 318 share a frame and the 430 has its own since it's so long with the diesel engine in it. I believe they used to call the 430 a "green submarine". My Dad and I have restored a few pieces over the years so I appreciate the work you're putting in to this channel! To be fair my Dad worked at our local John deere dealership so he told me about the tractors that would come in on trade. It's not uncommon for folks to trade in an old tractor when getting a new one. The price tag on a new one would buy enough parts to restore many old ones. I've found that most of the old stuff is actually in decent working order! Both the 420 and 430 started right up and drove on the trailer. I lucked out on the loader from a local farmer who hadn't used in many years, he has lots of huge tractors and had no use for the little one. He had a 420 but no mower deck. The decks can go for about 1000$. I got the better end of the deal but we were both happy about it. Thank you again for sharing your work!
@WorkshopRebuild
@WorkshopRebuild 2 жыл бұрын
That's really an awesome deal! The value of those tractors and attachments will not go down at all... they might just go up in value because they will always become rare! The 430 is a long tractor and it does have quite a bit more weight on the front end, compared to the JD 420. Both are beautiful tractors in their own way. I am glad to hear that you were able to work with your dad on your projects and restore some JD garden tractor models in the past. It's always great to hear stories like that. You had the insider deals which might have been even better haha. I totally understand that "normal folks" just want to start a tractor and go. If there is any wrenching to do, then they can't handle it. Once a tractor is 5-10yo in today's world, it's pretty much retired, but not with an old JD 200,300 or 400 series! These tractors are built like tanks. I have a feeling those good deals always find you somehow and you are always on the lookout for new attachments. I always try my best to share as much as I can through my videos and I try to find new ways to showcase my projects. I'm just really happy I can reach so many fellow enthusiasts on an amazing platform like KZbin. Thank you for your comments, I really appreciate them. Regards Andreas

Congratulations on the 855 project, I've always liked that series of tractors and I'm eager to see how the rebuild goes. Working at a Kubota and Case IH dealer, unfortunately I understand the previous owner's situation and the dealer's unwillingness to rebuild the engine like the owner asked. With shop labor rates today, the cost to rebuild the engine in that tractor and give it a once-over with all OEM parts would probably result in the bill being close to, if not more than the tractor is worth. The sticker shock from the repair costs will often lead the owner to put the money towards a new tractor and to let the dealer keep the old one. I'm guessing the dealer tried to sell him a new tractor rather than go to the effort of finding all the parts to rebuild the original engine and possibly eat some of the rebuild cost (parts for the Yanmar engines are plentiful and easy to find).

Thank you Michael, I'm glad you can relate to this series of compact tractors! I will try to share as much info as I possibly can, because this could be valuable for others out there. I agree with you about the previous owners situation and it's really too bad. Shop rates have been rising from year-to-year and we must understand this. It's really not cheap to run such a big business! I hope this will allow smaller mechanics to find a spot in the field and create a name for themselves (which is not easy), but possible. That is very appealing to many customers as they can drive home with a new piece of equipment, but on the other hand it's very sad to see a little compact tractor like this get tossed away or taken apart and sold as parts. That is very possible that they wanted to sell him a new tractor with this JD 855 as a trade-in, but I did not hear that from him. This Yanmar engine will be rebuilt and I've already got some good news for it in an upcoming video. Thanks for tuning in, enjoy your week! Cheers

Jumping around your 855 videos. Your 855's 3TN75 Yanmar engine is very similar to my Gator engine the Yanmar 3TN66. The 3TN66 was used in JD 655 tractor before 1990. In non-running shape, I couldn't test the deck or hydraulics, so I would not give very much ($1,500 or so). In running shape, I see these packages for $7,500. There are really 3 issues with the dealer. 1. Does the dealer want to waste a bunch of time on an almost antique tractor which has no parts support? 2. Is the unit cost effective to repair? That's probably an $8,000 rebuild job at shop rates. 3. The dealer's older technicians with experience on these old motors have probably retired, or they have fired the experienced staff and replaced them with parts swappers.
@WorkshopRebuild
@WorkshopRebuild 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your honest response! I think you are spot-on with the numbers you listed. In an upcoming video I'll share more details on the JD855 and reveal the cost for this package deal. Speaking about dealer issues, I agree with all three points you made! It's hard to comprehend that a neat little 55 series compact tractors like this is already antique! Many parts on this machine are made in Japan (Yanmar Engine, and some other drivetrain components). This might be the biggest issue for the parts supply, especially today. When all the hours are on paper this might really be an $8000 dollar bill with the shop rates!! Crazy to think that there aren't many technicians with this knowledge anymore. I've seen insane prices on newer pieces of equipment which need computers flashed or software updates to function correctly. I guess we are moving towards software/hardware related issues very very quickly and the mechanical side of things is lacking knowledge in todays world. I appreciate your comment and thoughts about this topic. I understand dealers must make good money to run the whole operation, but it's very hard to support them when they cannot support their customers.

I try to find deals and fix them up, so I guess I'm a bit lucky! This will be a great addition and I can't wait to rebuild this engine. I believe I got a better deal than what it's worth around your area, so I'm happy about that! Yes there were some very good answers to my questions here in the comments and I fully agree. The shop-rates eat up a lot of the cost and that's just how it is nowadays. Not everyone has the knowledge and tools to fully rebuild an engine anymore and that's why shops are being flooded with this type of specialty work. Even if they don't tend to rebuild as much as they did in the past... I believe this rebuild will be very budget friendly, as I'm taking a different approach like I mentioned in thsi video. It will not be a full restoration, so maybe I can detail this machine and have a nice original looking tractor (with a rebuilt engine of course). Thanks again for your answers, best regards -Andreas

Hi there! The camshaft must be removed from the timing side of the engine. To do this, one must remove the timing gear cover and then you will have access to the camshaft. In this video, you can see me install a camshaft on a Yanmar 3TNV82A at minute 28:57 : kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3asq5-BrJKUiMk Be careful when removing the camshaft, as your valve tappets will rest up onto your camshaft when the engine is horizontal. Maybe it would be a good idea to rotate your engine 90 degrees so that your flywheel is facing downwards. I hope this helps and let me know if you got it done. Regards Andreas

Thank you so much for watching my videos and subscribing to the channel! It sucks when you cannot find the parts for a specific machine anymore. Some tractors are built to last forever and I've heard many good things about the 50's series you mentioned (650,750,850,950). The geared tractors are more suitable for field work and the hydrostatic tractors are more suitable for yard work. Both have pros and cons, but I'm sure you'll find the 55 Series very user friendly. I reside in central Alberta, Canada and here there are many hydrostatic tractors in general, like Kubota, John Deere, Yanmar, etc. Maybe you can find a tractor on Kijiji or Marketplace that will suit your needs. There are always great deals out there, especially if you can do some repairs yourself. Thank you for your feedback and I hope I can share many more videos that will spark your interest. @@WorkshopRebuild my pleasure, you make very good content. I regret selling my 650. If the block didn't have a hole in it i would've saved it for sure. Even a satoh beaver would be an interesting machine. Are they more common in your area? Im on the east coast and i have to admit they are not that common to find! A hole in the block is never a good sight, because there can be other internal engine parts that have been damaged at the same time. With a repair like this, it can get expensive very quickly! The 50 and 55 series tractors are both great for heavy work loads, but the 55 series with the hydraulic pump/motor will use more power than a geared tractor. The 650 has a max HP output of 17HP with 14.5HP leading to the PTO. On the other hand the JD655 has a 16HP engine with only 10.6HP leading to the PTO. This just goes to show that the hydraulic system is not capable of transferring more power, due to the fluids. You will notice these numbers on other comparable tractors too, so if you're looking for higher PTO horsepower tractor, you should consider a geared tractor (manual transmission). Here you can easily compare both tractors: JD 650: www.tractordata.com/farm-tractors/000/1/1/113-john-deere-650.html JD 655: www.tractordata.com/farm-tractors/000/1/2/128-john-deere-655.html I hope this helps! As far as I know, the negative on this tractor is mounted directly to the frame and on the right of the engine you will have a ground cable from the frame to engine. Best option is to get a running used engine for $3k or so, by far, time savings, possible cost savings, ROI
@WorkshopRebuild
@WorkshopRebuild Жыл бұрын
I agree with you in terms of time savings and labor savings for a used engine swap. I believe it's hard to find a good running 3TN75RJ since these engines are already around 40 years old. I might have had a very low-hour tractor here with only 1400hours on the clock. Even with that number this engine failed due to poor maintenance. If I were to swap this with a used engine, I would not know the internal condition and I might have more maintenance and labor costs in the near future due to a failure. Therefore I tend to lean towards a full engine rebuild (on all my projects), because I know exactly what I have and it should last me at least another 20 years after that. To get this tractor up and running again, cost me $3450 USD. Within this price I also changed many seals around the tractor and I replaced some hoses. I think this was a fair price and I didn't mind doing the work either, because I learned a lot. I hope this helps you understand my point-of-view. Thank your for sharing your thoughts and suggestions too. Regards Andreas

@@WorkshopRebuild you did well! Probably saved time not searching and you know what you have now. Where I am , we have extremely thrifty Mennonite farmers and shops who also work on engines... I change my oil often but if I did not I would be able to get it repaired locally. I am not sure what it would take to ruin an engine. I got my tractor with 1313 hours on it and the last documentation on oil change was 10 years prior and i tested the oil in a lab and it was a little high on iron (ring wear) and low on additive calcium, but otherwise ok. Maybe dust ingress or running low on oil got your motor.
