John Denver released "Calypso" in 1975 and it became a surprise hit. The song is about oceanographer Jacques Cousteau and his ship, the RV Calypso, which was named after Calypso, a nymph in Greek mythology who famously detained the fabled Greek hero Odysseus for seven years, "singing with a sweet voice as she went to and fro before the loom, weaving with a golden shuttle." The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau was a documentary television series about underwater marine life hosted by Jacques Cousteau that ran from 1968 until 1976. It was one of my favorite shows when I was a little kid. 36 episodes were made.

I was one of the first people to hear "Calypso" in its entirety after John finished it. I was in his summer road band from 1974 to 1979. I remember that he went on the Calypso with Jacques Cousteau and came back excited that he had written the chorus to the song on the ship. However, he couldn't come up with the verses. So, he took off on his quad runner into the mountains around his home in Colorado. A few hours later he came screaming back to his house yelling that he had the verses. It was an amazing song and we all loved it.

Oh what an amazing story!~ Thanks for sharing! I so loved John Denver's music in my youth and my life! ❤

Nice. But it must have been a three wheeler because Suzuki didn't bring the quadrunner to market until 1982, some years later. Honda introduced the ATV ("All Terrain Vehicle" aka three wheeler) to the US in 1969.

This was a tribute to Jacques Cousteau, who had a ship called Calypso which did much research and exploration of oceans.

When you listen to this again, understanding that Calypso is a ship, a scientific research vessel, then the sounds and sea chanty feel makes sense. We watched Jacques Cousteau and his ship Calypso every week on TV,

I grew up watching the Jacques Cousteau show and many years later named my cat, Calypso. It was a fitting name because she was just a little feral kitten that we found and rescued at a boat dock a few years ago.

Jacques Cousteau during WWII he invented for the Allies the Self Contain Underwater Breathing Apparatus or SCUBA. Being used today by all divers. I loved his documenters about the underwater world. They should reair them.

I loved watching "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau" when I was a kid. It was so fascinating. As a family, we'd sit glued to the TV, wondering what cool undersea adventure the crew of the Calypso would document, what dangers the divers would encounter, and what sort of marine life they'd study and tell us about. The underwater cinematography was spectacular. Each episode was a gem. That ship and crew went everywhere, and took viewers along for the ride.

Such a beautiful song and a beautiful soul! I always tear up hearing John Denver songs. We lost him way too young. I love all his songs but this is super special as I grew up racing to the tv when Jacques Cousteau's show would come on! His ship was called the Calypso. It was a huge part of my life as I at that point have never seen an ocean.

As others have said, Calypso was Jacques Cousteau’s ship. John was able to spend some time with Cousteau on the Calypso, which of course made a great impression on him since he loved nature so much.

I was talking to an old friend yesterday who knew John (Dutch), as he was getting started. They were both part of the folk scene in L.A. in the late 50's and early 60's. They even roomed together for a short while.

John wrote with such a great grasp of feelings and words. He's one of the best! I hope you can do "Poems, Prayers, and Promises" if you want to see a song with a lot of depth from a music and writing standpoint. Or "Shanghai Breezes" and the live versions of those songs are better!

This was the B-side to John Denver's "I'm Sorry." Somehow it sounds very cinematic, but it was apparently never intended for a movie or documentary.
