John Denver was one of the best singer/songwriters of the 70's. His massive hit collection includes: "Rocky Mountain High", " Take Me Home, Country Roads", I'm Sorry", Calypso", "Sunshine On My Shoulder", " Annie"s Song " and "Thank GOD i I'm a Country Boy." This song was written by Denver but popularized by The great trio Peter, Paul and Mary.

Per Songfacts This was written by a very young John Denver, who was then a member of the Chad Mitchell Trio before beginning his solo career in the 1970s. Denver wrote this in 1967 during a layover at Washington airport, "Not so much from feeling that way for someone, but from the longing of having someone to love." The duet is the highlight of the 90-minute NBC TV show The Midnight Special on August 19, 1972. Those of us who grew up in the seventies remember the Friday night show with great affection.

Because of Vietnam, I think a lot of people applied this song to going off to war, but to me the lyrics imply a musician leaving for the road - again, but it's different this time. "There's so many times I've let you down So many times I've played around I tell you now they don't mean a thing Every place I go I'll think of you Every song I sing I'll sing for you When I come back, I'll bring your wedding ring"

Does it matter if it's about Vietnam or a concert tour? It's as relevant today as it was back then. How many servicemen/women now would hear this and FEEL it. I felt it back when I was married, got drafted and served. I saw it when my son served and had a wife and daughter. Music is supposed to make each of us feel something

About touring but could be anything, and it hit #1 in part because of how it connected with people in thinking about going off to Vietnam.

@rubroken, 757optim is responding to Brad and Lex's question. Yes, individuals can apply this song to various personal situations, but Brad is wondering about what the songwriter (Denver) was thinking when he wrote it.

He's singing about being a working musician, on tour, missing his love, and striving to be a better partner than he has been in the past. The line about "not knowing when I'll be back again" is likely there for poetic license, and also, for the purpose of rhyming with the previous line of the song. This song may, or may not, have been based on John's own personal experiences at that time.

John Denver wrote this song during a layover at Washington Airport. He said it was about the pain of parting. His friends Peter, Paul and Mary had the biggest hit with their version in 1969. When it was often taken to refer to the Vietnam War.

Mama Cass was from the group: "The Mamas & the Papas". They had many hits of their own: "California Dreaming", "Twelve-Thirty", & "Dedicated to the One I Love". Cass Elliott didn't want to be Mama Cass anymore, when she went solo. John Denver wrote this song you're listening to; he was an awesome song writer and storyteller. "Rocky Mountain High", "Annie's Song", & "Calypso". Cass Elliott had hits of her own: "Dream a Little Dream of Me", "Words of Love". John and Cass are both gone now. RIP John & Cass. xx

John did write this about leaving to go on tour. Writing to his wife Annie, to whom was often his muse. This video clip was from John Denver's television special and the Cass Eliot from the then defunct Mama's and Papa's was his guest on the show. Cas Eliot was a wonderful singer in her own right. Many artists covered this John Denver song, probably the best cover was by Peter, Paul and Marry. John Denver wrote all of his music and also wrote for other artists. I remember watching this 1972 special. It was broadcast a year after I was released from the Navy, 1967-71.

One of the reasons I like watching your reactions is I get a different perspective of a song. I never thought it could be about a soldier going to Vietnam but it fits. When a performer gives his song to the public, it is no longer his song alone. Even if it was about someone going on tour, when he's away anything could happen, she could get tired of his long trips and find someone else closer to home. Sailors, soldiers, traveling salesmen, truck drivers and sports players have the same problem. Also, jealousy may rear up in either of their minds. My sister used to be jealous of her husband who worked long hours and had to go to Alaska for three months or more working on the Alaska pipeline. Then he got a job traveling around the world but this time he'd take her with him which wasn't good either. She was afraid to go out in public alone and all she saw was the inside of a motel room. The sad thing is you have to go where the money is. My brother going away to a job in Denver, a thousand miles from S.F. broke up his rocky marriage. His wife found someone where she worked. My brother wasn't perfect, he had cheated on her but when the he found out about her cheating, it was the end. It wasn't because she cheated but she left their 10 and 7 year old daughters all alone all weekend! What was ironic, for those three months in Denver it was the first time he didn't cheat, deciding he should grow up and be faithful. After thus he never went with a woman for more than a year. He was done with romantic love, only sexual. My Dad occasionally had to leave for a job for three months but he and my mother never cheated. Both of you are so lucky to have a solid relationship. John Denver wrote many beautiful songs, songs you could sing with around a campfire or alone in a car with the radio on. His mother was good friends with a neighbor of mine and was devastated when her son died in the private airplane crash. You wouldn't think he'd have an adventurous side like that but he was an accomplished pilot.

So back in 1976 when Paul McCartney and Wings came my dad lined up for tickets. He missed out on tickets for us. So, he still took me to another gig. That's when John Denver rolled into town. Hi guys. John wrote this while sitting in an airport waiting out a layover. He wrote it for his girlfriend Annie who he later married. It was very similiar to the Johnny Cash song I walk the line, in that they were both songs by touring musicians telling the women in their lives that they could be sure there would be no other women or fooling around while he was away. John's agent shopped it around. In fact, they gave a copy to people as Christmas gifts. It was recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary. Because of the era many people thought it was about a guy leaving for Viet Nam. John said that was not the case. John recorded it too, but did not hit the charts, in spite of most people still believing it is one of his best songs. P, P and M had a big hit with it though.

In answer to Lex's question, his original recording sounded pretty much exactly like this, same instruments, minus the harmony vocal. But Peter, Paul and Mary did their version a few years before John Denver did his. To answer Brad's question, yes he's singing about being a musician going away on the road for another tour. But it's left open ended enough so that people can apply it to their own idea of what it means.

Three bits of trivia: -This song was originally called Babe I Hate to Go. -John Denver correctly calls her "Cass Elliot". She hated the name "Mama Cass", (which was given to her by a record company person). -Cass Elliot died in the same London apartment that Keith Moon died in. (The apt. belonged to Harry Nilsson).

I was Nine years old, in 1972. The entertainment we had, from 50 years before '72, was all Black & White and mostly Silent. Bear in mind that in 1972, the Vietnam War was still raging and U.S. kids were being forcefully drafted into fighting, killing and dying for a cause that was, for the first time in U.S. history, unclear and vaguely nefarious. I am not into Country & Western music nor Folk, but John Denver transcended types and genres. You should hear his amazing vocals in the song "Calypso", an inspirational number dedicated to the famous exploring ship of the same name, captained by legendary ocean diver Jacques Cousteau, the inventor of the Aqua-Lung, which made possible for all mankind to enjoy deep-sea diving for extended periods of time.

John Denver wrote it as a meditation on the rigors of the road on a musician's relationships but then it was recorded by the group Peter Paul and Mary at the height of the Vietnam War and it struck a chord with all the military men leaving and not being sure when, or if, they would return. This version is lovely, Cass Elliott was able to blend her vocals in so well with other performers, but then so is the other by PPM.
