A PAINTER'S PAINTER…James Kalm walked into Lori Bookstein Fine Art and was introduced to the artist John Dubrow. After your correspondent's pathetic appeals, John was gracious enough to give viewers a guided walking tour of his remarkable show "Transformations". Many of these paintings have undergone years of revisions and repainting. The resultant surfaces and compositions bare the patina of this long struggle. A musical introduction is provided by Joga, and was recorded under the Arch at Washington Square Park

Nice work. I am impressed by his approach to painting. The ability to rework old paintings guided by memory is great. I have always been fearful of reworking my old old failed pieces, bravo to him. I have seen other artists work with their hands with oils, but the results here are truly amazing. Like another writer, I never heard of this guy before your film, thanks for introducing him to me. The paintings are beautiful and as always thank you very much Mr. Munk. The guy squeezes the oil paint from the tube to the palm of his hand and then applies it to the canvas?! I have no room to judge but who is this guy and I am sure I heard another guy that talked of using his hands on large painting earlier this year (Again, thank You Mr. Munk)? I cannot believe it, I truly must be jealous.

Thanks! His work is excellent, I love it. But where Mr. Dubrow mentions working without live subjects regarding his portraits is false. He does them live and regardless of whether he works/re-works them later he keeps the original subject meaning his original work. I agree he does remove the 3-D aspect later, that's clear, but he can't deny the entire portrait is based off a live original. Don't mean to sound a purist or anal, but it's a discrepancy between reality and what the artist claims. Also, how does he achieve that finish with the oil paint? Mr. Dubrow says it's just oil but it's extremely encaustic, I don't work with oils much but from my viewing it really seems there is more than the paint? I love the effect, just find it hard to believe.

Sorry to tell you this...but it really is just oil paint, no encaustic.

I guess he could be heavily texturizing it with a tool, like a pattern making tool, or a bastard file imprint; either way, I'd say it's a trademark of Mr. Dubrow's art! ...it's a beautiful effect :)
