I lived near John and met him loads of times at local parties, and while you were talking to him he appeared to be doing at leased three other things, at the same time, I do not know what they were, what an incredible person, I miss him, Martin Kaill, the Witterings.

Me too, used to see him around Wonersh in Surrey. He used to demonstrate the Harrier at Dunsfold. One year he did a take off that I've never seen before. Basically like the take off at the beginning but then stop for a number of seconds with it hanging in a vertical position for maybe 5 secs or longer. Was unbelievable, defied physics.

I lived two doors away from John Farley, lovely man, we used to meet at drinks party’s, and he would talk to you but it was obvious from his eyes that he was doing another two things in his head at same time . All the very best John. Martin

Thanks for the reply Martin, I've never met anyone who didn't like John. He appears to have been a one off. Robin.

I’ve never seen anything like that take off in my life.

I'll be damned I saw this at the Farnborough Air Show about 1976-77 with commentator Raymond Baxter and it was one if the most gobsmacking things I have ever seen in my entire life. In fact, while telling people about this occasionally, I found myself actually wondering if I had actually imagined it or whether my mind was exaggerating it!! I do remember Baxter shouting over the Tannoy "The pilot is going to demonstrate a slightly unconventional take-off"! I once flew a Harrier simulator at British Aerospace in Preston but they hadn't finished building it and the altitude indicator and runway effect had not been installed yet so I crashed on trying to land, BUT I TOOK OFF AND TRANSITIONED TO LEVEL FLIGHT FIRST TRY!!! Two of the greatest moments of my life were to do with Harriers.

If you enjoyed this as much as I did you might want to consider JF's book: 'A View From the Hover' It is written in just such as un-pretentious fashion as the man himself talks on this video. Thanks so much for posting this up. I cannot believe over thirty years have passed since.

Is this real? This seems impossible.

No CGI. I saw him do some something as outrageous as this at the Dunsfold Airshow around 1980. Basically he took off and paused the climb so held it it for 5 seconds maybe longer, hanging with the noise almost pointing totally to sky. I've never forgotten it, it was insane and looked quite impossible. I've a picture but it doesn't truly capture the stunt. I lined the nose up with a tree in the distance and 100% steady. Its difficult to explain.... utterly unreal. Oh and extremely noisy 😀
