This song was written at the height of the cold war, it was about nuclear weapons and there potential use. It was largely a plea to Reagan the USA president and the soviet leader at that time. To think again. It's a rallying cry to the ordinary people to make their voices heard.

@@justlinsu I hadn't realized the extent of the political divisiveness in Australia until I happened across something called Sky News. When I heard those Australian folks extolling the non-existent virtues of the Orange Menace, I came to the conclusion that there must be plenty of unhinged folks there as well as here in the US and that it would probably cause a similar sort of divide. As for the video Paul featured here, it's hardly gone "viral." It's not only not being used by the Harris campaign-----I can't even find it on youtube when I go looking for it. I have mentioned it to a number of acquaintances, and no one has ever heard of it and (sadly) never heard of John Farnham or "You're the Voice," either. I've been a fan since that record was released in '86 and might be the only American who has listened to that song more often than most Australians over the years.

Although it's been used for one particular party, it's been used very respectfully, I personally think. I would hope they had the decency to ask first. I think they are calling Americans to use their voice and become more united in getting the country back on the right track. We actually need it here with all the riots that have been going on. I just hope it hasn't upset John. Our TV Logie Awards are coming up soon and they have planned something special as a tribute to John. It would be fantastic if he could accept it in person. He and his family are so special 💖🥳💗

I believe John is one of three or four people who own the copyright of You're the Voice. If just one says "No" then it can't be used in the original version? Wait and see time. UK has what is called "performing rights". - unrestricted music can be played at public events, and a fee is charged, which I assume will filter down to the copyright owners. . But I imagine there is an embargo list of music that can never be played without the permission of the copyright holders. I also believe it was Cliff Richard who successfully campaigned for the UK term of copyright to be lengthened. People are living so much longer now, and its right that musicians and singers should still benefit from their work in their later years - they wouldn't be asked to perform in person or appear in any show without payment after a certain age. Nice to hear from you - I'm still playing catch up with your fascinating series of the History of John (must take up all your spare time - but he's worth it!). I'm not sure this has actually gone viral. I understand that it was put together by a Kamela fan and that Farnham did not authorize its use. As a result, I have seen this political ad nowhere but here on youtube and I suspect most Americans will never see it and (sadly) will still not have discovered this fantastic song. All of that being said, I think John's song would be a very powerful message in a worthy and desperately needed political campaign.

Australia has a Prime Minister who is the head of the majority party. If a party majority votes that they have lost confidence in a Prime Minister during their term, then the majority party hold meetings and elects a new Prime Minister from the elected members of the majority party who put their name forward. It has happened often when the majority party feels that the population are unhappy with the direction the country is going in. Especially when an election is nearing and they are worried about losing that election. We ALL have to vote or we are fined if we don’t have an acceptable reason for not doing so and we have a preferential (ranked choice) voting system with regularly held censuses which ensure that we have a universally same number (within a small +/- number 110K) of voters in every electorate so that there is little chance of gerrymandering occurring. An independent Electoral Commission maintains Electoral Rolls and holds elections. AND we don’t register as a particular Party voter or independent, we are only registered as our name and address when we turn 18 with updates if we change our name (marriage), address or die and are never purged from the Electoral Rolls.

Now I'm curious - I always thought John controlled the use of this song in particular - so did he give permission for it to be used in this way,? BTW - oral cancer diagnosis and surgery august 2022, involving removal of part jaw and reconstruction. all clear of cancer august 2023 . There has been many surgeries in the reconstruction phase. He can still sing as vocal cords unaffected.. But public performances? Facial muscles will have been affected, which will affect mouth movement.... Aug'24. UK. E ❤

No permission was sought, and s hit will hit the fan - which will really shock me, because the Dems know just how many artists are already suing the Reds, or have served cease and desist notices, for using songs without permission. Be interesting to find out which is true.

OMG did John allow that? He usually avoids politics, except last year when we had a referendum here and that split the nation 50 - 50 regarding whether he should have endorsed it, so I don't think he'd have done that, especially in the US. Goodness me the US is cooked so it would be a big risk to lend weight to anything over there. I was shocked not pleased to hear the adv and it will be interesting to hear if anything comes from John's camp. BTW Australia is a member of the Commonwealth but have our own politicians and Prime Minister and follow the Westminster political system.
