John Farnham's voice is amazing. His range is amazing. His controlled breathing is amazing. He can run up and down a stage and never lose a beat, a note. I think Freddy Mercury was the same. Such natural talent ! Not like today with mics glued to them like they are undercover coppers. No, REAL TALENT !!!

We love the bagpipes in Australia. We have Scottish bands in most parades and at events. Scottish people emigrated to Australia and some of them and their following generations became musicians. From the name of this song, John Farnham is known as 'The Voice' in Oz because he also has one of the best voices in popular music in the world with a huge vocal range and perfect pitch. The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra loved working with him and stated that they had never had so much fun before in a concert.

Always, always do John Farnham live. He takes all his songs to the next level for his audience. There are several you should do from this concert, There is 1 exception to live performance. There is only audio. "Black Dog". This is his warm up song before a concert. Will blow you away! He has never performed it live. All Australia is sending John love after his 11 hour surgery for cancer, and wishing him a speedy recovery.💖

The only artist in Australia who's concerts could out sell international artists. Even Michael Jackson didn't stand a chance when he toured at the same time as Farnsey. Also only artist in Australia who has has number 1 hits in 6 consecutive decades from 1967 (when he was 18) right through till 2016 (when he was 67) Not many international artists have even managed that feat. And still currently holds the record for the highest selling Australia album for his whispering Jack Album that this song was the lead single from. He also holds the record for winning the most ARIA australian music awards. Although now shares the top spot with Silver Chair . He was still performing and the major draw card for fund raising concerts in his 70's Sadly he recently, had surgery to remove a cancer from his jaw so probably will never perform live again but the whole of Australia is behind him wishing him a full and speedy recovery. You definatly have to check him out singing his version of Beatles classic HELP. His arrangement of the song really changes it up and is perfect. Live with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Orchestra is the best version online

You had the best of the best up on that stage, from John, to his band, the backing singers and then the Melbourne Symphony orchestra, that was world class, and a live performance to boot. None of this lip syncing garbage that the rest of the world does. There are lots of Scots here in Australia. I live in the Southern Highlands and we have a small village called Bundanoon that becomes Brigadoon once a year with all the pipe bands and they have the Australian version of the Scottish Games. So yes there is a big Scottish contingent here in Oz. Even John is English/Australian his family came out as a migrants, so we claim him as OURS. He’s a very special man, who needs all our love and support right now. ❤️❤️❤️

John Farnham is a national treasure and amazingly unknown outside Australia. He's as wonderful a person off stage as he is a performer on stage. He was the first person Queen approached to be their lead singer after Freddy Mercury. He has sung rock, soul, broadway, opera, pop - he's called The Voice for a reason. Check out his song Help from the same concert with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra - it's a Beatles cover, and John Lennon said it's how the song was intended to be sung. The duet "When something is wrong with my baby" with Jimmy Barnes is another stellar performance.

One thing you will discover with John is how wonderful his voice is. How powerful his voice is. A lot of his songs have very good messages. Slow. Fast. Different genres of music. He does it all. You go home from one of his concerts on a very big high. They are all brilliant. To have an orchestra with him only highlights how powerful his voice is. In Australia we have had over 50 years of being entertained by John and his wonderful band. Enjoy the journey. This is only the start Sending love and good vibes to John and his family 💕💕

Johns last name "the H is silent" Aussie pronounce it Farn-am and Melbourne is pronounced Melbin. John earned the title of "The Voice" and now after watching him you know why. His voice is pitch perfect. Every concert was always sold out. The best thing about John is that he sounds the same live or the studio. He has been onstage with international artists Olivia Newton John, Brian May (Queen), Stevie Nicks, Lionel Richie and Tom Jones.

Many of us Aussies are direct descendants from Scotland. I am 50-50 Irish and Scottish, Australia was a British colony which I’m sure you must know! We also have our own tartan which is proudly worn by the bagpipe player here. AC/DC of course also used bagpipes (Bon Scott was Scottish-Australian).

Yes, can see how an Aussie legend with a bagpipe solo would seem a little strange but apparently when John first got his hands on this song he could hear the bagpipe solo in his head. Maybe it's the anthemic nature of the song itself but it certainly works! "It's a Long Way to the Top" by Aussie band ACDC also featured bagpipes. If you like his sound, watch other performances from this show as the orchestra just makes this legend even better. He delivers pitch perfect live performances every time. His arrangement and cover of the Beatles "Help" is phenomenal.

The song was written by a scot, who had slept in when he wanted to go to a protest in scotland. There are a lot of scottish descendants living here, generations of us. A commenter said that piper was in full official rig for Melbourne. Kudos to him, for getting all kitted out, and filling his bag, without a droning sound to be heard, all for a few moments.

8:27 lol yes the bagpipes... Ok firstly the Scottish great pipes are historically "war pipes". Meant for rallying the soldiers/army. The musical arrangement of "The Voice" gives itself to a marching or call to arms kind of vibe. But the message is a call to freedom from conflict, war, and hate. A desire for a better future. Written back in the 80s in response to changing times and attitudes. But the message is again super relevant today as the world has gotten lazy and slipped back into war and bigotry. Time to fire up those war pipes again! ;) Yes this orchestral version is the best version of this song ❤️

It is so powerful a song, and so emotive; it was a song for then, as much as it is a song for now. I could see, you were hit by the emotion of the song; I get it everytime I hear it, especially this performance. And it can only played with the bagpipes; it would be unaustralian to do otherwise!

If I was religious, I'd say Farnsey is an angel sent by God to show us how it's done. This is power Gabriel would bring. Proud to be an Aussie, so privileged to grow up listening to his songs.

I loved your reaction to this song from John, he is a fantastic singer and his live performances are really something to see and appreciate. He can sing any type of song and he is also a bit of a comedian. John has sung with many international artists like Tom Jones, Celine Dione, Olivia Newton-John, Stevie Nicks, Lionel Ritchie & Anthony Warlow. When checking out songs, look at the live performances, especially with the Melbourne Sympathy Orchestra and his duets with Olivia & Anthony in "The Main Event". John also sings with Jimmy Barnes and a great duet with his longtime backing singer (Lisa Edwards) singing "Angels".

John thought bagpipes would work, which they do. Australia is familiar with bagpipes, we are a Commonwealth country

Why bagpipes? Why not? John is an advocate for musicians. He highlights different instruments in every song - bagpipes, sax, acoustic guitar, keytar, piano, and also gives space to his incredible supporting singers to shine in different songs - Amazing Grace with Vanessa Fields and Lindsay Field is unbelievable, Angels with Lisa Edwards is moving (with a bit of slapstick thrown in).

John can sing anything check out John and Jimmy barnes when something is wrong with my baby check out his version acdc opera Grenada with our wonderful Anthony Warlow. He is the most easy going person you'll ever meet and he always allows the audience to sing. He is a natural talent no singing lessons I remember when he started he was a plumbers apprentice but thank goodness he found out his pipes where on fire. As far as the bagpipes goes the Scots didn't leave them in Scotland when the immigrated they took them with now bagpipe bands are everywhere

Hi, Hap! As you, I got to know John Farnham at the Australian Firefighters concert just before the pandemia. I also knew the song but I'd never heard it in a concert. I immediately checked John F. and got some info on him. If I remember right he was born in England but he feels more Australian than English. He really loves Australia and Australia loves him. And I also love him from Venezuela💖💖 Happy New Year, Hap!
