What kills me about Stu Cook and Doug Clifford is that they were tired of just being a bass player and drummer to songs that John Fogerty wrote and sang. So today they make their living being a bass player and drummer to songs Fogerty wrote and sang.....only now they have a different singer trying to sound like John Fogerty......and they are happy ??? WTF ??? Epic Fail !

But now they are the centerpiece of the band. The crowd comes to see them. The crowd cheers them. And that is what they wanted, even if those cheers are mainly from default of John not being there. They played across the street from me couple years ago in a parking lot as part of a summer concert series arranged by my little town. Doug and Stu basked in the spotlight. Made little speeches. Never mentioned John.

When you are in a band with a guy who is the lead singer, plays the lead instrument, and has written hit after hit and made the band huge because of his unique voice, shut up and be glad to be riding his coattails.

I agree with you per se, but in honesty, the other band mates weren't necessarily "riding on his [John's] coattails"- ..... all four of them were instrumental in creating the actual sound that was CCWR. I personally think that jealousy WAS the main player in what became this dynamic, most probably fanned by John's vision of what HE was wanting, and when you're in that position, you can sometimes become a bit "overbearing" in your attitude and behavior. But overall, John just simply got screwed, because the music business is TOTALLY ruthless, and that attitude permeates everything, and (almost) everyONE.

@@NoOne-kr4jc The other band mates got the opportunity to put their own songs on the last CCR album, Mardi Gras (sometimes referred to as Fogerty's revenge). The stand-out tracks were 'Lookin For A Reason,' 'Someday Never Comes' and 'Sweet Hitch Hiker.' all J.F compositions. In 1976, John Fogerty told Rolling Stone magazine "I figured that Creedence made six albums. Let me count... the first one, Bayou Country, Green River, Willy and the Poor Boys, Cosmo's Factory, Pendulum... yeah, six. I wouldn’t even count Mardi Gras and neither would anybody else. I had no control over anything after that. The rest is horse manure. Baloney."

Maybe I am also in favor of John Fogerty, but I don't recall many CCR songs in which the other members sang to make the music unique so that only their voices, other than John's, had a unique signature. Granted, the drummer and bass player were good, but once another set of musicians with similar skills learn the licks, like a bass line walk down, it could be almost any two or three other musicians doing the back up work.

Sometimes lead singers leave bands because their ego gets to them, and they feel they are bigger than the band and the band had little to do with the success. In Fogerty's case, and this is refreshing to say, he deserved to leave the band and go solo. His guitar, voice, and song writing were beyond key to the band's success. Getting sued after going solo for sounding too much like himself, was absurd, and demonstrated that he was better off without them. Good for him.

George Harrison had almost the same experience. The publishing company that owned Hes so fine sued George. The suit took so long that eventually the owner of He so Fine was George himself.....

I was lucky to have been a young dude during the height of CCR, The Beatles, Hendrix, Cream, etc. and all that amazing music. But it wasn't CCR that interested me. It was Fogerty's voice, unique style of guitar playing, and great song writing. He could have hired any other 3 musicians and done the same thing, but his bandmates could never say the same. They were nothing without John. The man is a legend, and what happened to him was criminal and an injustice to us all.

Saw Fogerty perform here in St. Louis this summer (2018), and his show was e.p.i.c! Far and away one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to: even in his 70’s, John Fogerty is the real deal - a living legend. I’m SO glad I got to stand less than 100 ft. from the stage and witness one of America’s greatest rock icons perform his best music.

I’m 34yrs old . I started listening to CCR early 90s . I was maybe 7or 8, I was a kid. I fell in love with the sounds of the guitars & they way he sang. People trip out when they see me driving or in my garage listening to this music. Like what’s this young man know about CCR lol. It’s 2019 & My son is 14 & can sing most of there hits today he’s not your typical teen who stuck on this mumble crap going around today. I’m so glad I instilled this music in his mind when he was a baby. He’s becoming a young wise man at such a young age & I truly believe it’s because of this music. Forever thankful for the men who introduced this music to me when I was a kid. Thank you.

Stu Cook and Doug Clifford did to John Fogerty kind of like what Don Brewer and Mel Schacher did to Mark Farmer from Grand Funk Railroad. Bite off the Band's Songwriter and Composer's hand as if he didn't exist. Without the Fogerty Brothers THERE WOULD BE NO CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL. Fantasy co-owner Max Weiss renamed the group the Golliwogs (after the children's literary character, Golliwogg). Bandmembers' roles and the instruments they played changed during this period. Stu Cook switched from piano to bass guitar and Tom Fogerty from lead vocals to rhythm guitar; John became the band's lead vocalist and primary songwriter. In Tom Fogerty's words: "I could sing, but John had a sound!" In 1967, Saul Zaentz bought Fantasy Records and offered the band a chance to record a full-length album on the condition that they change their name. He had never liked "the Golliwogs", in part because of the racial charge of the name, and the four readily agreed. Zaentz and the band agreed to come up with 10 suggestions each, but he enthusiastically agreed to their very first: Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR), which they took in January 1968. According to interviews with band members 20 years later, the name's elements come from three sources: Tom Fogerty's friend Credence Newball, whose name they changed to form the word Creedence (as in creed) a television commercial for Olympia Brewing Company ("clear water") the four members' renewed commitment to their band. CCR was the first Band to sign performing at the Woodstock Festival. CCR continued to tour incessantly with performances in July 1969 at the Atlanta Pop Festival and in August 1969 at the Woodstock Festival. Their set was not included in the Woodstock film or soundtrack because John Fogerty felt the band's performance was subpar. On November 16, 1969, they performed "Fortunate Son" and "Down On The Corner" on The Ed Sullivan Show.

I admire this amazing man immensely! I think the whole world lost out big time that John's career was side-tracked for so many years when he could have been giving us more amazing music - Damn all those who held this genius back from the rest of us when he should have been free to further explore his creative talents that only have a limited time. The understandable bitterness from his unfair treatment, I feel, has squashed his ability to create to the level he was in the late 60's, that surely would have continued for at least another 3 - 5 years in the early 70's had he been allowed to.

Possibly the actual fact is John Fogerty was always getting the mountain of television exposure, that was definitely being shined on him during televised performances...Thereby affecting the personal emotional sense of fair play for the other 3 band members.... Should of stayed the course earning name recognition one way or another , then branched out doing solo projects after CCR has run dry its string of #1 Hit Songs ! Just a thought of what may have been possible if egos didn't ruin the band !

John WAS CCR. I read John's book and it's a very interesting read. Stu Cook and Doug Clifford weren't smart enough to keep riding the horse that made them rich and famous. Some people just aren't too smart or self aware.

I grew up listening to CCR in my armature years of drumming and I loved the band ,for me John is the man ,, CCR without his voice is just another band, even though they are all great musicians and in especially Doug , from whom I learnt a lot as a 12 years old rookie drummer , his opening in I put a spell on you took. E to the roof and I worked my skin off to learn and be able to play that roll as good as he did as well as all the other tracks he did in CCR , and I wish he would stand beside John and let the CCR rolling .

I know when I first heard that song I felt exactly how John felt when writing it. I was drafted a year after I graduated high school in 1968, and sent to Vietnam in the summer of 1969 with only 10 months left on active duty. Talk about a bummer and a stunner!

I saw John Fogarty 5 times. Fantastic. The last time around 7 or 8 years ago. He was jamming his hits a little longer. Really getting into it. What a surprise. Also I understood that he was not allowed to play his own songs for the year mentioned in video. He could not play it legally. Thats why he started playing them again. One of the true talents.

2019, and I finally sit and actually listen to Johns story. I was very young but loved good music at the time of Credence's rise. They were mysterious, as all musicians were to me. "Run thru the jungle" I think that is a song title? That song mesmerized me. To hear what this predator Saul did? And how these other band mates reacted? Sad. Truly sad. No more mystery to me. This sounds just like the "Bad Finger" story. At least though, John lived thru it. I am a musician now. Sometimes I wish I were not. Music can sooth the soul, but the greed it brings out in people is kinda sick. Rich and famous? Not so appealing these days.

Music and film business can be brutal. I wish CCR was named after John Fogerty, *HE WAS EVERYTHING* in that legendary band. Many other bands were named after their leaders, Santana, Van Halen, Fleetwood Mac, just to name few. May you have very long life John, you definitely represents the beautiful side of America.

Amazing man, musician Songwriter and singer. His voice was and is so original and his own. John Fogerty is and alway was CCR

The Credence story is a classic example of how the music industry couldn't handle the concept of a band. The contracts were crazy and put ridiculous pressure on the members John is amazing to have survived.

'Surviving' is so true. If you read his biography it's amazing what he went through and even more amazing that he is still with us today.
