What you fail to mention is Saul Zaentz who owned Fantasy Records was able to use subterfuge to convince Tom Fogerty, Doug Clifford and Stu Cook to join Fantasy in court which pit brother against brother. Therein was the bitterness. And, the four vs one held the rights of ownership until the case was settled 10 years later. So, John was prohibited from performing his own songs for those 10 years despite being the songwriter. If you listen to him explaining for the 150th time, he is all over the map. Much is left out and I believe it took such a emotional toll that it has taken his spirit. He has said that he and Tom never were able to work through it before Tom's death. In reality, there was no "best part".

@R!OT EARTH What justice? I suggest you do the research and recognize that this was outright theft that deprived John 10 years of his life and at his prime. Justice is supposed to right a wrong. This was a contentious bitter fight that lasted 10 years. Justice delayed is justice denied.

There is no reason to give your publishing or copywrite or ownership in any way over to any publishing company! You can do it all by yourself! Even if you don't go through the steps of registering your songs and setting up your own publishing company, you can always record your songs, write them out and send them to yourself in an envelope you keep sealed. That is a proven legal copywrite. ALSO! Never think somebody will not steal your songs! I have heard so many stories of songwriters having their songs stolen... Even if no money was ever made! I personally have lost my own recording tapes to a studio that would not turn them over to me. They were unfinished and nothing was ever done with them but it always bugged me that I paid for the tape, the recording time and the studio owner would not give me the recordings. I guess they thought that if I started making money they could sell the tapes but that to me is laughable.
@jsmith17464 жыл бұрын
@@flagemdown66 - It is far easier in today's world to own your own publishing rights. When Fogerty and CCR were in their early 20's, back in the 1960s, the knowledge of how to do that was limited, and the ability to get your music heard was very difficult. You basically had to sign with a record company in order to be heard, and the record companies took advantage of these young musicians who were, at the time, ignorant of the legal implications of those contracts. I can tell you, for a fact, that he makes no effort to "imitate" Neil's singing voice like tribute bands do. That is how he is going to sound regardless of what he sings. John just looked at the interviewer and said Mark was Dire Straits and if there was no Mark then there would be no Dire Straits. Just beyond comprehension that the other three CCR band members didn't seem to understand at any juncture it was JF's creativity that was directly lining their pockets. Then, he could replace guys and still be CCR. They should have replaced Tom when he left. The other two should have enjoyed the ride. Once Johns contract was fulfilled he should have renegotiated to get MORE of his past CCR publishing. Plus, he should have asked for some ownership in the label and the contract should note that he can have an independent cpa verify the accounting books. Now, of course they could just keep two sets of books, but if discovered, that's a felony. It wouldn't be John taking them to court, it would be the government. John would reap the losses.

I think an absurdity has gone unnoticed here. Had the publisher that sued Fogerty won the case, then Fogerty would have been required to pay the publisher who in turn would have been required to pay half of the judgment to the aggrieved writer who wrote the original song, "Run Through the Jungle." That writer of couse was the defendant, Fogerty. The moral here for this and many other reasons I won't go into is that if you record your own songs and if it is at all possible, publish them yourself. A publisher's job is to get the song recorded which Fogerty surely didn't need but I suppose his giving up the publishing was part of the Creedence record deal. Many years ago when I made my first recording a music person "offered" to publish a song I wrote that was on the record. I wasn't all that savvy but had better sense than to give away half of my song. It has since been recorded by several acts and although I didn't get rich I got 100% of the royalties rather than the 50% I would have got had I accepted that generous offer.

It's telling that when CCR broke up, the others were almost immediately let go from their contracts, whereas John Fogerty was not. Fantasy clearly knew where the talent (and therefore the money) was, and they ruthlessly and shamelessly milked every penny they possibly could from this guy. It's good to see him in a better place than he was. He certainly deserves to be there.

How dare he sound like himself? The fact that he had the balls to continue sounding like himself after a period of time had passed is amazing. Disgusting behavior. What's next a painter paints in a specific style that is recognizable? That's crazy!

Which song do you like better? As a song I like the "old man" one better - especially for the guitar work. I do wish it was recorded with CCR circa 1970 - I love that sound they had at the time. The 80's solo stuff always bugs me somehow, kinda digital sounding, can't put my finger on it. But I don't hold it against John, I hold it against modern technology. So grateful for this awesome artist.

I noticed that as well - electronic drums were fairly new, and John used it quite a bit on his Centerfield album. He used track recording to put each instrument and the vocals on, layered on from individual takes. I still like the album a lot, though. I enjoy his follow-up album "Eye of the Zombie" even more, and that one featured some session musicians to give more of a "jam" type of feeling and fullness to the recordings.

It's cool how he messed up the riff in Jungle, only because he'd normally play it on a tuned down guitar.
@broncobrian26209 жыл бұрын
rickhorvath how does he usually play it?
@rickhorvath9 жыл бұрын
Run Through The Jungle is played on a guitar tuned down a whole step - usually his black Les Paul (as well as Proud Mary, Bad Moon, and a few others)

John Fogerty speaking about music publishing made me immediately think of Badfinger. They were ripped off big time by the management side of music. A very sad ending for Pete Ham and Tom Evans as a result.

New music artists need an agent just like sport figures do, so they can avoid all the rip off legal contracts they need to sign to distribute their music in retail markets. Either that or start there own publishing company from the get go, even before they start gigging.

what I've always wanted to know is how he gets the "swamp rock" sound from almost any guitar. I did here him one night when he didn't have the setup right, or didn't have the setup at all... sounded like just about any normal guitar. Has to be something in pedals, amps, something.

Some parts of the music industry, really do stink to high heaven of infected shit! The mean spirited, petty minded bullshit which is prevalent in certain facets of it make you sick to the pit of your stomach...!!! Keep on rockin' John!!!

John is the best storyteller-in his songs and describing real events. Everyone can relate to the preposterous nature of the suit and the hilarious vindication in court: computerized Fogarty: WHAT!
