Well as far as what he said about Chuck Berry being the King of rock and roll, he is dead wrong there. What Tom is not realizing is that Chuck only put out the kind of music he did because of the kind of music that Elvis was putting out. Chuck has said in numerous interviews that his goal was to get those white kids who were listening to Elvis to listen to him so he chose to write songs with similar lyrics as those Elvis hits but rock them up with his guitar. Elvis wasn't copying anyone, he was just making the kind of music he always wanted to hear. The songs that Elvis used that had been previously released by black artists did not sound much like those songs the black artists released. If you listen to the original recording of Hound Dog and then listen to the Elvis version, they are nothing alike. Elvis for intents and purposes "created" rock and roll but it was Chuck Berry who took it to the next level and made the guitar more of a center piece and that form of Rock music is still with us to this day in 2020. For those who want to agree with Tom and say Chuck Berry is the "real" king of rock and roll let me ask you something, since we know from what Chuck himself said throughout his career that he simply wrote songs like what he was hearing from Elvis and a few others, what if there would not have been an Elvis? What kind of music, lyric wise, would Chuck Berry have been writing? If you truly want to compare the artists then you have to also be honest and say that Chuck Berry's hits all sounded the same pretty much. While Elvis's hits were more of a variety of sounds. Heartbreak Hotel sounds nothing like Hound dog, but Maybelline and Johnny B. Goode sound very similar. I don't know the exact year but Chuck Berry's hits stopped coming very shortly after his career took off, while Elvis was still having hits right up to the day he died. The honest answer is actually this - you would not have rock and roll music today as it is without BOTH men's influences. But also to be honest, one man's career was built off the work of what the other had already presented to the world, that would be Chuck Berry who, as I said and as Chuck has said, he was just using similar lyric styles of what Elvis was doing and that had opened the door for this new music called rock and roll. I love both Chuck and Elvis and am thankful for both men giving us the music I love to hear and it was these two men who gave us later bands such as CCR.

The sad fact is that John gave CCR the sound that made them famous but it ended up wrecking his and Tom’s relationship. Maybe Tom felt slighted and jealous, since he had led the previous bands (Tom Fogerty and the Blue Velvets and the Golliwogs) but they had little success.

John got screwed over bigtime by Saul Zaentz, owner of Fantasy Records and lost millions and millions of dollars and ownership of the songs that he wrote. He was even sued by Zaentz for plagiarizing his own song (Old Man Down the Road/Run Through the Jungle). His brother Tom and the other two guys sided with Zaentz. John, rightfully felt betrayed and never forgave them. Yes, he probably held a grudge for too long which affected his mental as well as his physical health but we never walked in his shoes. I'm glad John is back performing those great songs. I saw him earlier this year in Las Vegas and he was better than the two times I saw CCR back in the 60's.

I’ve seen Creedence Clearwater Revisited and I’ve seen John Fogerty in concerts. Revisited sounded more like CCR, than John Fogerty and his back up band; you can’t replicate the rhythm section with others; Stu’s bass and Doug’s drumming is CCR. Another thing, John’s voice is sadly NOT the same anymore. But even worse, those that replace Tom, Stu, and Doug to back up John, just don’t play and sound like CCR. I enjoyed seeing and HEARING Creedence Clearwater Revisited; a better show than John and others.

Are you referring to the signing over the voting rights to Zaentz? That happened two years after this interview, after Tom learned that he was dying. Zaentz swooped in to take advantage of the situation to offer him money to offset his medical bills and provide for his wife and kids. Zaentz was also leading Tom on by making him think he was going to use Tom's "Unbearable Lightness of Being" song in Zaentz' movie of the same name. Zaentz played Tom like a fiddle to get revenge against John for leaving his label.

Rusell Shaw sorry but John wrote the songs, arranged the songs, played guitar on the songs and then sang lead vocals on all the songs. The rest of the band whatever you may think of them was not that great. This was not a group with equal talents. It was John at 99% talent. It want like the Beatles where John and Paul we’re the main creators but then George showed himself to be quite a talent for writing and Ringo cane up with the perfect parts. CCR was filled with envy of John and when he finally gave them the reigns because they were constantly complaining that he was too bossy the music became shit. If they had had some humility and true love for the guy they would still be a band and maybe Saul would not have gotten away with so much. CCR without John is nothing as evidence shows. John without CCR is still John as evidence shows.

I don’t know if Tom sided with Saul Zaentz or not! However, no one else would sign Tom to a recording contract, except Fantasy. So I believe Tom sucked up to Zaentz, for sure! That is why Tom stated to John, on Tom’s death bed that Saul Zaentz was his best friend! Tom Fogerty was so desperate to make his own music that is the real reason he quit Creedence Clearwater Revival. He could not accept that he would ever be able to write music that matched up to what his younger, and more talented Brother John, could produce. Then, after all the music Tom did produce, he realized that he was going no where fast, because his songs & music, just did not sell well! Nevertheless, he did try to get the four of them back together, however, John would have no part of it! It is sad, that these four close friends & Brother’s could not have worked it out. Tom Fogerty “cut off his nose, in spite of his face!” Too bad as the 4 of them were synergistic as a group, as long as John was leading them, musically!🇨🇦

Rich ? Famous ? John Fogerty made them neither Rich nor Famous. John Forgerty believes he was every thing in that band and gives no credit to people that struggled with him and supported his music as a team since the mid 50's. Its the mentality of a Plantation owner with no appreciation for those who slaved to achieve his plans. I worked for a guy ..I think he was from Haiti..I somehow was directed by my mom to assist this guy in renovating the Laundromat she worked at during the day..the guy needs someone to assist him. Work had to be done at night after Laundry closed.So I was in there assisting this dude for 11-12 hours a night till Laundry opened i the morning...Drop Ceiling..Wall Paneling..Tiles..it was for around 10 days..in the end Im hoping to get paid some modest amount and the guy doesnt pay me.When he was confronted the guy says why should I give him my money..it's my job, my company, I did everything..That's what this John Forgerty dude reminds me of. Not to mention every thing he did on his own Post CCR was rubbish.. Look at me Centerfield..oh brother..just rubbish. @@merseybeat1963 You are either joking or extremely ignorant. John was the writer of all of the tunes! The rest of the guys tried to screw him and stabbed him in the back. They played the game and lost in the the end although John had to go through al of the court bs. You want proof? What have these guys done? They were basically a cover band of themselves. Why? Because John was 99% of CCR. Any of the guys in the band could have been replaced by any mediocre musician. They shoudl have kissed his ass for getting a job in that business. Listen to Tom. He can hardly put 2 words together. He has the sophistication of a primary school kid. He was lucky that John let them keep the name CCR. If you think otherwise then you are welcome to go to a CCR concert and find someone singing as good as John sings the songs. HE WROTE THEM, ARRANGED THEM AND PLAYED GUITAR AND SANG THEM. The only crap album that the band made was theone where he let them have control. It was a total wreck and they could not admit it as their ego wouldn't allow it. This is what happens to a lot of bands where there is one major creator and the rest of the guys think somehow they are entitled to an equal share. Post CCR was rubbish? Then you are really ignorant. John was sued for sounding like himself. Such was the hatred with these guys. Imagine being sued because you sounded like yourself. Luckily John won the case. John sounds like John Fogerty and John Fogerty sounds like CCR period. I usually don't comment on these band feuds but this one hits home as a songwriter. These guys are akin to Ringo Starr suing Paul or John for their solo songs after the Beatles ended. Yes I know it was CCR's Publisher that sued but the guys in the band were 100% behind him and stabbed John in the back. So don't go telling us John didn't make them rich or famous. They made a hell of a lot more money than they would have made on their own. Certainly the fame they attained had all to do with CCR and John was CCR. This interview was done in 1986! Now where is CCR now? Poof! Nowhere. Where is John Fogerty? Still playing and living hapilly with his family (and playing with his kids who at least will not stab him in the back like his brother). Greed enters where talent leaves.

Yet JF thinks it was all down to him. After CCR he was never as big as CCR right..I dug CCR a lot..they were freakin good..but that solo revival period he had for a few years..that stuff sucked to my ear. Talking about the Beatles..this is similar to Pete Best sticking it out with them for all those years living like sht and them kicking him out just at take off..which was understandable to get the additional Octane Ringo provided..but when they made millions to not show any appreciation to Best at all was DEAD WRONG. They threw him a bone 25 years later only because they had to..The boys were just too greedy to give him some due..Sir Paul held tight to the one or two million he could have given to Pete for his years of service..instead Sir Paul pissed it off so much easier the many millions to the wood legged gold digger. So many posts to reply. Nobody was there but the band and management, and very few facts are known. The main facts are that John was the artistic source for the band. He wrote the songs, but the other guys definitely added their sounds/style of play- it is natural. John screwed himself. Despite a band member having a business degree from college, John signed the contracts, he admits, without reading or understanding them. He got himself trapped. Yes, record moguls are bastards, but by the time CCR was together, the problems of the Stones and the Beatles with bad contracts were well known and CCR should have been more aware. John is a control freak and at first, he would not allow the band to contribute, then when his brother quit, he ordered them to contribute an equal number of songs. So once the band disintegrated the others sued to get out from the contract and Zaentz let them go to hang on to John. It was dirty and nasty, and fans of the band take sides, when there is blame for all to go around. John lost the rights to his songs to get out of his contract in the end. I think too many are too hard on the rest of the Band and defend John because he was the song writer and singer, but he set himself up for a lot of the problems he went through, but never wants to truly admit it. The lawsuits and counter lawsuits only made it worse. It was as ugly as the Beatles break-up, just less publicized.

Anthony Dodge The Model Train Outsider How do you know John is a control freak? You have no idea what went on & how things went down. Yea, John brought in all the good songs. Tom, Doug, and Stu were inferior as far as song writing is concerned, history proved this. Sure John signed the “contract” so did Tom & Stu & Doug! However, there was also a verbal commitment that it would be ripped up or modified if Creedence was successful! Were they successful? I believe they were. However a, ripping up the contract or modifying didn’t happen. That is the root cause of John loosing interest in giving Fantasy anymore material. Almost simultaneously, Tom decided, if his songs couldn’t be used & Cook & Clifford wanted to contribute more is what blew the band apart. Was John Fogerty right on this front? I believe so, without a doubt. Tom Fogerty, Stu Cook & Doug Clifford’s record speaks for themselves. Neither of the 3 of them could produce music that the masses wanted to listen to. This is not a knock on Tom, Doug, or Stu, just the truth as history proved!

Even if its tru, i know im risking backlash here and john fogerty might go balistic on me , idk him Tom played great rythym guitar , they sound great together, was it that hard to share the success, at least on the visual surface....for the sake of the band. John wrote all the hit songs. Pretty much every song, until the "Mardi Gras" album where Doug Clifford & Stu Cook removed all doubt who had the song writing talent. John also arranged Grapevine & Suzie Q. The band was first called "Tom Fogerty & the Blue Velvets," and Tom was the lead singer. Sibling rivalry can be a bitch and holding grudges is an "emotional cancer" that never ends well. Record companies are notorious for being too greedy and controlling over a product they have very little hand in creating. John was robbed of tens of millions of dollars. The saddest part of it all was the years that fans were robbed of the music they could have possibly been recording together. Keep On Chooglin, John Fogerty! Your songs will go on for a long long time. Contrary to the last comment, your significance is monumentally evident to any true fan of yours in CCR and beyond.

Johnny never let me down if your tired of listening to the whiny one why are you’re even making comments about something you have no clue about how it all went down. What I am tired about is your posts insinuating John Fogerty is this, and John Fogerty is that. You like Tom Fogerty? That is great. He probably was a very nice chap! Why don’t you start threads about Tom’s contributions to the band? He made a few albums & had some decent songs! His contributions in Creedence were limited, however, before he bailed on the other 3 members he was a good part of the band. John Fogerty could help it that John could write better music then Tom. That is not a slight on Tom, just how history played its hand out. Don’t forget, Tom Fogerty tried to get them back together sometime after he bailed& after he realized he really couldn’t make it as a solo act. Again, not a knock on Tom, just facts!

Listening to Creedence again now, in 2017, it really shows how much they needed each other to obtain their "sound". Everything all the band members did on their own, post breakup, didn't measure up to what they put out as Creedence Clearwater Revival. As John Fogerty controlled every musical thing and wrote lyrics to the songs, it is always looked upon as "his" band which, I think, is not accurate at all, upon hearing all aspects of the music. and what the other three contributed. As John found out, you can't hire musicians to duplicate what the other three members brought to the whole of the sound. If you read everything out there from all band members' perspectives, you'll probably see, like I did, that one huge reason for the breakup was John's inability to manage the band's financial affairs. Oh, it's easy to use the old cliché that they were "screwed by their record label", but John insisted on being "manager", but knew nothing about business and recording contracts and, in effect, was ultimately responsible for screwing himself (and his bandmates) out of the millions they so rightly deserved.
@drummersagainstitk
@drummersagainstitk 7 жыл бұрын
Respectfully, I've no idea where your source was that he managed the band's financial affairs. Stu, Tom and Doug didn't want to do anything about anything. John was a driven SOB and he did produce the "goods" in every aspect and they hated him for it. That is unfortunate for them but you can't blame John for it. Any musician changes will change a bands internal sound. When things become huge things get distorted. How it played out behaviorally was not smart by Stu, Doug and Tom. Remember.... the genius is intrinsically in the tune. NOT WHO PLAYS IT.

"Without John there would be no CCR" is stating the obvious. Likewise, without Tom, there would be no CCR is obvious.. Stating that John was the center of the CCR constellation is also obvious. Now that we've gotten that out of the way, if John had shined playing with Tom, Stu and Doug back when they were teens and instead opted for a solo career, CCR would be nothing. What John's music would've sounded like and how well his music would now be known to the public can only be speculated. The facts are that there wasn't one member but there were 4 members in the group that was named Creedence Clearwater Revival. Assuming that the members of rock n roll bands aren't robots or marionettes being led around by a puppet master who writes songs that are to be performed exactly as they were originally conceived of in their author's head, we can conclude that making music is a creative, collaborative process that renders songs. We can't quantify how much influence Stu's bass and Cosmo's drum styles influenced the CCR body of music so we are left to speculate. The one thing that we don't need to speculate about is what we know for certain, ie we know who the members of CCR were the group of musicians who rehearsed together to create their music. Belittling the efforts and influence that Tom, Stu and Doug had on the CCR sound by claiming that CCR is/was nothing without John equates w/ claiming that the E Street Band would be nothing without Springsteen or that Crazy Horse would been nothing without Neil Young.. It is stating the obvious while missing the point. At the end of the day, musicians love playing music and the songs are their things. Without knowing the history of the musicians and their personal struggles, Stu, Doug and friends who formed Creedence Clearwater Revisited skillfully play some great music, straight up.

So I started a dialogue. I think I wrote him a letter. We talked on the phone at least once.” He suggested that each of them wrote down the issues they had against the other, then they could work through them one by one. His own contained eight points, and started with the fact that his brother had sued him over song ownership in 1978. But Tom denied it had happened. Fogerty says: “On the morning of the trial, he walked up to my attorney and said, ‘I’m not suing John any more.’ “That was in 1983. But I’d already had to deal with the lawsuit since 1978. Many thousands of dollars later Tom decided to drop the lawsuit. In his mind that meant he didn’t sue me. “So I sent him the cover page of the filing, which said, ‘Tom Fogerty vs John Fogerty.’ I don’t think we got any further than that. Unfortunately, our mom passed away.” --------------- Anyways, it's a shame...such a great band, and even thought John was the talent, the sound was gone when the band broke. 2c.

Why do we (I include myself) have to attribute any great art (I include CCR here) to one creator (John F) when the fabric was communal, family - yes there was the shaman (John F) who codified and artfully captured this phenomenon in song. John Fogerty is a masterful singer/songwriter- but he thrived for a time as the conduit-. The issues that are responsible for their demise goes all the way back to Cain & Abel - separating out and the resultant illusion of the brothers singularity- either/or rather than both/and - it is very sad that the external pressures I think exacerbated the brothers natural competitive natures. I LOVE John Fogerty - big any argument that he was “all of it” is belied by looking at the art created in the bands life, and the work after the band broke up.

Well said. There were additional stressors on the band, well beyond sibling rivalry. Saul Zaentz financially exploited the band and got extremely wealthy off of them, and pushed them to crank out records to make him even more money. Record labels pressing musical acts to crank out records and tour like crazy to promote the records was the norm back then. That dynamic was noted in the careers of Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, and those stressors were a contributing factor to their drug use and untimely deaths.

He even speaks about the people at Berkeley speaking and changing minds. Minds got changed in the 60's, as it does in any period, when presented with alternate information and a movement for freedom of speech. Remember, the majority of people were not against the war but became the majority. Of course, this has nothing to do with any fault within Creedance but I hate to see extremism in every criticism.

That might be partly due to his mild Asperger's, which John also has.

Thomas looks so uncomfortable. The young lass interviewing him lacks empathy. Puts him on the spot. Dunno that she meant to. He never really was a front man. But an integral part of the soul of CCR. Rest easy, Thomas Fogerty. 🍀🌹🍀
