Can we all take a moment to realize that this man is still alive and didn't die on drugs and rejoined RHCP again? It gives me joy every day to think about it.

Hillel Slovak... imitated once (with John)
@smilingskull78278 жыл бұрын
John imitated Hillel? I really don't think so, the only thing John and Hillel had in common were, both in the Chili peppers, both had strong on stage charisma and both had an addiction to heroin, and this is where the comparisons end. Imho John was more creative with his ideas and understood music theory which had a broader spectrum of lead soloing and harmonic melodies over Hillel, where Hillel did much of only hard core solo leads. Find me one riff that Hillel did that is as beautiful as John.F "Snow" and this is only one of many. Just my opinion.
@coldacre8 жыл бұрын
"find me one riff that Hillel did that is as beautiful as John.F "Snow".... easy: "Behind the sun". the prettiest song that they ever wrote. plus the context of when it came out, 1987. nobody was playing music like except maybe Prince himself. Hillel was light years ahead of John... especially in the climate of the 80's. as for having a broader spectrum, Hillel only had 3 years, 85-88 of music that exists.... lets have a look at John's first 3 years.... 88-91.... who would you say achieved more? Hillel by a million years. imagine if he was given 2 decades of growth, a luxury John had but Hillel didn't. still having said that... Hillel was an innovator, an original. he was the ONLY guitarist in a 'rock' band playing funk in the early 80's.... his impact was more than record sales, he inspired other musicians to inspire other people, such as a teenage John Frusciante. if you can't see that John imitated Hillel, you really should listen to an album called "Mothers Milk". I LOVE Frusciante, he was a dynamite guitarist on Blood, Sugar. incredible. I also love Dave Navarro, I love Josh Klinghoffer... I also have a lot of respect for Jack Sherman. they all brought something to the band. but to deny Hillel's impact on John is ridiculous. watch a Chili Peppers concert from 1989 and it is a carbon copy of Hillel's playing/sound. John also played a white Ibanez and had long hair when he joined RHCP. funnily enough he went to a sunburst Strat and a shaved head not long after!
@essexboy958 жыл бұрын
pretty sure John once said he looked up to Hillel before he died and when we was asked to join the band he tried to play in a Hillel style as so he could play well with Flea but over time the band encouraged him to do his own thing as he grew as a guitarists

The soul of Jimi Hendrix drips off of this guy. The run he starts at 5:03 is pure Highway Chile. As he explains he ran it through an effects pedal a few times so the studio version sounds more synthesized, but listening to it clean it's there.

The solo in Dani is pure Hendrix. So cool. Never heard anyone catch that tone and feel before.

Crazy how he's 12 years older than those mid 90s interviews and has 100x more vitality and life to him than he did then, I'm so glad he cleaned up and got to give us all this music. Check out curtains if you haven't... album is fantastic.

I've been a RHCP fan since I was 7, when my uncle was listening to BTW in his camaro in the summer. I'm 21 now. As much as I love John and he very much IS the chili peppers, I think people are being close minded in blasting Josh. Josh brings a new sound to the band and I think he has really grown into it, it's not about filling John's shoes, obviously nobody can, but it is about evolving and playing with a fresh energy. I'm with you had some good songs, Rain Dance Maggie, Ethiopia, Police Station, Even You Brutus, Brendan's. Also the Getaway has some of my favorite RHCP songs ever! Sick Love, Goodbye Angels, The Getaway, We Turn Red, Dark Necessities! John will be missed; but I still like their new material just as much as their MM-SA era songs, just like I like their RHCP-UMPP era songs
@minosbull59627 жыл бұрын

He is such an underrated guitar player. I think he would rather have it that way. From what i know of him, doesn't care about fame, just cares about making music. Lots of bands now don't know how to make music. RHCP was and still is the most unique, musically talented group I've ever heard. Pop culture picked it up and paid them, but most importantly, they didn't have to sacrifice their music to get cash. I'm not talking about Slovac or Navarro either

Josh's guitar playing is amazing. My favorite album is Californication hands down, but in my honest opinion The Getaway is an extremely close second.
