In my dreams I see a fat man On his face is a frown He’s got money in his left hand In his right he’s got strings that run All over town As he pulls on them tightly he chokes all that grows He keeps watch day and nightly and plucks life Like a rose. In my dreams I see the young men That will change history They will die for the fat man As he laughs so carelessly In his laughter I hear the sorrow From the pain that it brings I hear mothers weeping softly Wrapped up tightly In his strings. Cut the strings from his fingers Wrap them twice around his throat Show him not your kind mercy From the laws that he forgot he wrote Let us know of that which binds us That which steals all that grows That which kills what defines us To be plucked Like a rose.

I feel Tom Waits oozing through this song. Love John's versatility in his songwriting. His music took all of my attention when I first heard him. I was hooked from the first line of Satan and St. Paul. I can't wait to see what he does with his talent once he has settled into the spotlight. I don't think we've heard the best of John Fullbright quite yet.
@murphroberts48914 жыл бұрын
@Lance Taylor- When I first met John, he was 20 or 21 years old and had already written and released this song. Imagine being that young and writing this kind of depth. Yeah, definitely Tom Waits blood running through his veins. And, no, we've not heard his best. He's still growing.

Don’t forget Leon Russel’s and Woody Guthrie’s influence on John Fullbright. He is after all an Okie. One of the greatest songwriters of our day IMO.

All you ppl commenting on something like he musta sold his soul to the devil to be this good (combined with other songs he's written like Satan & St. Paul and Gawd Almighty) are just jealous I guess. Whether you question this young man's political or religious affiliations, he is a true talent that hails from the same small town that spawned another legend in another time ... WOODY GUTHRIE. I don't think there's anything going on here other than he is an AMAZING SINGER/SONGWRITER with God-given talent that will be very famous someday. JOHN FULLBRIGHT YOU ROCK!

I'm gonna haveta sit down and visually contemplate the lyrics of this one. Right now, all I can think of is something like Jack the Knife. It is somewhat captivating because of Fulbright's style of delivery. Well, I didn't have to go far----the lyrics were in the comments. I am wondering what Fulbright had in mind when composing.
