My opinion, besides John being Cosa Nostra 1000%, one of the reasons John stayed so public was because he knew that kept him alive, or at least a more difficult target.

Gotti didn’t have a choice whether he was public or not. 🤷‍♂️. Well he did before the Castellano murder but once you become boss of a crime family in NYC, The media capital of the world, you are now a public figure. Law enforcement and the media make sure of that

if you know anything about that life... you realize a life of criminality has a hard time abiding by rules haha. The idea that it's a life of "honor" or "rules" is only so in theory, not in practice. It's constant treachery. Can't have constant treachery and trust amongst brothers.

Hey guys, great show. Yes, Joe Bonanno discussed by the Vincent Mangano hit and Albert Anastasia. Anastasia claimed that Mangano had a contract on him, so he hit Mangano first in self-defense, and Frank Costello supported Anastasia, so that was it. In the book "The Mob and the City" by Alex Hortis, it's shown that the hit on Anastasia was planned by Joe Biondo and Andrew Alberti (others mention Joe Riccobono and Charles Dongarra as well, but Biondo was the primary leader of the plot), and carried out by Steve Armone, Stephen Grammauta, and Arnold Wittenburg. Apparently after Albert had Frank Scalise (the underboss, and the boss before Mangano) killed, Biondo believed he was next, so he struck first in self-defense. Joe and Bill Bonanno believed that Vito Genovese and Tommy Lucchese were behind it, so maybe they supported Biondo. With Frank Costello out of the way, Albert had no one to support him. Afterward, Joe Bonanno, who was the chairman of the Commission at the time (more of a secretary position that rotated between different bosses), he chose Carlo Gambino, the consigliere, as the acting boss. At the end of his probationary period in 1960, he was approved as the official boss.

Regarding the self preservation rule, I'd like to point out that while bosses being murdered was not a regular occurrence (in NY) from 1931 until the Mangano brothers were "disappeared" in '51, the threat or treachery to murder a boss, and succeed, was still ever present throughout the 20th century throughout all of Cosa Nostra. There were reportedly a lot of near misses or potential scenarios where a boss was plotted against. Including Profaci, Luchese (2X), Costello, Maggadino (3X), Gambino (3X), DeSimone (L.A.), Bonnano, Joe Colombo assassination attempt in '72; Giancana murder in '75 (although technically he was not boss at the time; Licavoli (Cleveland); Bruno in Philly (1X; Assassinated the 2nd time), Testa blown up in '81, Scarfo being targeted by the Riccobenes; Big Paul in '85; Orena/Persico War; New England Patriarca Jr/Salemme/Ferrara-Russo War; Stanfa/Merlino Philly War; etc, etc. I feel that the rule, or any rule that is not meant to be broken in Cosa Nostra affairs, has been historically used, not just to adhere to, but as a political device to "get over" and not be 'sanctioned' by a Commission majority. The Genovese family, who have always reportedly been sticklers about the rules the longest and, technically, created the rules everyone agreed to (ie. Luciano), were the ones who have "bent" those rules as much as anyone. But they always seem to maneuver politically within Cosa Nostra, without suffering the consequences of killing a Willie Morretti, attempting to assasinate Costello, disappearing Tony Bender, killing Eboli, the Caponigro double cross, taking it upon themselves to kill Gene & John Gotti, etc, etc. Technically speaking, those were all rule violations. But they always seemingly had a justifiable excuse. And none of the other families ever stood up to them. It's kind of like the United Nations declaring there was no connection between Al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein, but the U.S. Military goes ahead and bombs Iraq anyway. Rules or no, it seems Cosa Nostra is moreso about whosoever is the strongest. The Commission was conceptually to make everyone equal. But Genovese/Gambino hold a whole lot more sway than the remaining 3 families, or any outside NY. So was the Commission really an equal balance of power? I think it boils down to what Valachi stated. Lucky Luciano eliminated the "Boss of Bosses" role, but he still pretty much became the Boss of Bosses "under the table." That power continued during Genovese's era, Catena/Lombardo/Tieri era, The Chin's era, and now Barney's time.

Lingering question that has been answered sometimes: Why, oh why did Vincent Gigante get off with no problem from attempting to kill Frank Costello? I guess Genovese wanted him in there. But not only did he try to kill him - he fucked it up. So, a serious guy like that doing that - still don’t get it.

Nobody will ever know. John knew it was his loved one’s & possibly himself or Paul, so he struck first. But if it wasn’t for the legal troubles, Chin was having him whacked for breaking all the rules, out of principle. So John was at the end of his road either way, he just didn’t know it until Chin set up the bombing of Frank Deccico’s car. Chin was taking out John’s people, and John didn’t strike back.

What year did New Orleans and Tampa get on the Commission per se, or was that law enforcement just trying to tie up everybody across the country into things? I've always sort of read Marcello and Trafficante did what they wanted with regards to their territories and Kansas City and some of the Midwest cities were under Chicago's thumb, similar to Philly under NYC? Great video as always fellas.

Actually, there's a famous Nationwide Commission photo - again, could be legit, coulda been an attempted jam-up - & you see Don Anthony Giordano, boss of The St. Louis Giordano Family, Don Nicholas Civella & The KC Civella Family, Russ Bufalino & Eastern PA's Bufalino Family... I'll see if I can locate it... I provided a link below... It's *The 1963 Commission... Vito Genovese, Carlo Gambino, Tommy Lucchese, Joe Bonnano & Joe Colombo, all of NYC, Stephano Magaddino in Buffalo, NY, Raymond Patriarca representing Providence & Boston, Angelo Bruno representing Philly, Russell Bufalino representing Eastern PA, John LaRocca representing Pittsburgh, Anthony Zerilli heading up The Detroit Partnership, Sam Giancana for The Chicago Outfit, John Scalish heading up Cleveland, Anthony Giordano running St. Louis, Nick Civella running KC, Carlos Marcello in New Orleans, Santo Trafficante outta Tampa Bay, a fella named Civello in Dallas, a fella named Colletti in Colorado, a fella named Licata in Los Angeles, & a fella named Cerrito in San Jose.* Take it for whatever it's worth...

@@matthewrider5906 Yeah that is the picture im thinking of actually. Civelllo in Dallas was Marcello's cousin and I am pretty sure was sent out there to be a proxy. He was from Louisiana. I just never knew if that was the feds trying to tie everything up nationally into a larger conspiracy or if at one point the Commission really was that organized (which I don't doubt) but you know the feds when it came LCN back then grasping at straws. Buffalino was defiinitely a heavy weight, as other you mentioned. Al D'Arco talks about some Colorado stuff and goat wars wayyy back so that makes sense. I know San Fran and L.A. once had strong presence.

Guys, just watched this. The Scarfo story the puke told is a delusional dream. When he was on his first RICO case Scarfo sent John a 1/2 dozen ties along with a long kiss-ass message of support. John looked at the ties, some of which were green (he hated that color), and threw them out.

Near the end of this video, RJ poses the question to Michael about taking everything he knows and has absorbed over a long time in that life as it pertains to protocal... RJ...Great question.... The first thing that popped into my head was.... Taking into account the treachery, contradiction and the imoortance of making the right decision in regards to survival...If you or any other Friend.....is the kind of Man that no matter who, what, when, where or why navigates through life based on his own beliefs, values, morals and never leans or bends one way or another for any reason other than his convictions held in a higher regard by guys with more stripes than guys who simply decide who they are loyal to based on whos moving up and just survives by any means necessary? Im sure times change that answer buy going off what you experienced.... I hope that makes sense lol... Sometimes getting something from my mind and turning it into words is difficult. Great job guys!

These are fantastic and informative shows. In the 80’s I grew up in a mostly Italian community in Connecticut. Italian neighbors and restaurants, festivals, all in a pretty tight knit community. There were a handful of thugs, these guys were feared and respected and would fight all the time, get arrested, some died and some went to jail for many years. My buddies and I looked at these guys and went the opposite way. Our goal was to stay out of trouble and be as successful and fucking rich as possible. Seeing these guys in and out of jail and working shitty jobs was not appealing thus gave us the encouragement to do the right thing.

If im correct chin is the only boss at that time who isnt there by someone being in jail or killed. He was part of the commission before and after the commission case. He is the only guy with a family fully with him. After the commission case its vic orena, john gotti, vic amusso and chin. And only chin was a boss for years. So chin really had somewhat full control.

Great exchange gentlemen. I’d like to flag some contradictions by Sammy. He said that after Paul was murdered, he and Frankie DeCicco hit the mattresses and laid low for a few days at Joe Watts’ apartment. Michael recounted how after getting news of the hit, he drove from Jersey straight to the Social Club where he found Frank. Sammy also said that they sent word to the Commission that they didn’t know who hit Paul, strange considering they had been given permission to rubout the Boss. Phil Leonetti, in his book mentions the meeting between John and Sammy with him and Nicky Scarfo, and states how Scarfo was quite impressed by John.

Michael, I watched James Proctor last night. He was talking with a guest , I think the fella has a channel called ,” Mob Talk Radio “. Anyway they were dissecting the murder of Jack , the fella that you said you were involved in his murder . They were dissecting a video in which Scammy said you were lying about being in on it. The guest suggested that it was well known in Bensonhurst about Scammy being bisexual and it’s possible Jack was in a relationship with Scammy and that’s why Jack may have been killed . Since then I’ve been wondering if Sammy killed his crew because they too may have known or even taken part in such things when high on drugs . I always found it strange he killed his crew or certain members because it’s not like they had businesses to take over like others he’d killed. It’s certainly something to ponder. Have a great day RJ, Mikey and Michael Jr.
