The Maspeth Federal Bank itself is owned by wonderful people who sponsor several vintage car shows (old-school muscle cars and original classics) every year that are free to the public. They also sponsor, or used to sponsor, free 1950s-era concerts featuring some of the biggest names in Doo Wop history, also free to the public. In addition, many of the people with accounts in their banks are Vietnam Vets or otherwise fine and honorable elderly people from the neighborhood. In other words, the guys who robbed one or more of their branches were beyond scum!, especially considering they were Italian or Irish themselves. Many of the people who live in Maspeth are Italian, although there aren't nearly as many Italians living there nowadays as there used to be. Still, it's a beautiful, pro-American neighborhood.

While I was in college 30+ years ago, I worked at a mobbed-up freight forwarding company in Springfield Gardens, right outside of JFK Airport. The people I saw, the shit I heard, both fascinating and sad. Most of the lower level guys couldn’t stop talking about themselves to project how gangster and hardcore they really were. The more senior guys, most of whom did time, were much more quiet and careful what was said. Best part about the job was if I went out to pick up food from local restaurants. No waiting, no need to pay, the staff knew who you worked for and would jump to attention, even though I was only an employee working my way through college. Fun times but also a very odd experience if you’re not part of that world.

I grew up in Ozone Park, used to walk passed Gotti’s club every day walking to school with my friends. They would wave to us. We would smile, we knew they were the “scary men”! 😂 Went to Gotti’s big fireworks shows for years. This was the norm for us residents. John Gotti’s nephews were frequent visitors of the bars I hung out in when I was a teenager, needless to say they didn’t make a good impression. I’ve moved out of New York 16 years ago, I still miss it. Thank you for showing me my “home” that I will always miss. ♥️ I guess you really can’t fully take the mob out of NYC.

I have a friend who works for the court system. Basically he told me : If you have a $5,000.00 a day lawyer (THINK: O.J. Simpson) ..you can get any kind of crime GREATLY reduced. The main issue at hand is: The JUDGES and the LAWYERS usually know and like each other / respect each other (and sure; they may even play golf with each other). FYI for anyone exploring Broad Channel: there's a National Park there worth checking out. The Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. It's basically a federal bird sanctuary in tge shadow of JFK Airport and an interesting place to go for a walk on a nice day.
