This is the instructional video I made to go with the original edition of the Long Distance Casting book. The video is getting long in the tooth - rather like me - but all the information is just as relevant as ever. The basics of good casting never change. I hope you enjoy it, and that it helps you cast better. The sound might be slightly out of sync. I'll fix it if I can find out how to. Apologies!

Just got back into fishing, after being away from it for years, and followed John's advice. I'm hitting 100+ yards most times, with the Off ground cast, and when I get the pedulum right 150+ (more practice needed). It might be old advice, but I think it's gold advice.

What a great and informative vid, with high quality voice over demonstration. Simple good advise from one of the best. I can cast through a life time of fishing good distances with bait but if this video was a round forty years ago, then I would have certainly had a good head start.

Brilliantly done John thank you ,as it's been many years since I used to go surf casting ,and although I take my carp gear abroad I've gone a little rusty with a multiplier. The trouble was that years ago ,you couldn't find much in the way of how to set up a multiplier for casting and so after god knows how many birds nests they go stuck in a draw and people returned to fixed spool reels . Just one thing John there was no need to dye you're hair and beard just to make this video , although I'm not taking the ???? as I've still got the red Intreapid Seastreak I used to fish with in my reel draw, (I've also got the Hardy Victor I used with it ).Take care and many thanks agains

A wonderful series. I was able to cast about twice as far laying the weight on the ground. I'll work up to the pendulum cast. Thank you.

So far I've tried the easy cast method. Which I've pretty much doubled my cast distance with half the effort. Thanks for your video's. Hoping to get the pendulum cast going too.😁😁😁

Thanks John, very helpful video. I've been practicing the basic cast and in a couple of days have improved my distance by a good 20 yards already. The principle is very much like mastering a correct golf swing. I'm almost 70 but can now outcast most anglers half my age.

The level wind mechanism reduces distances considerably. Reels with open CT frames such as the Abu6500 series, Daiwa 7HT, etc. are far better for casting. Older reels with level winds can usually be converted to the CT specification by swapping the whole frame or by removing the level wind and inserting a solid crossbar into the existing frame.

This 3 old videos, which year is it, 1980s?, this were of the best I could have found up to now on youtube. Very simple but lot information in them. I am not from Britain, I am from Croatia instead. There are no such long and shallow beaches here. It is different type of coast. There is basically no thing such 'SURF' here so long distance casting is not of such importance neither it is famous or popular. Most fishing is done inside 40 or 50 yards. However, I am kind of fishing zealot and I began learning and practing casting (on my own) year and half ago and now I am able to reach 100 to 120 yards distance. I can perform easy cast, OTG and pendulum as well as continental style overhead cast(which is called 'CARP cast'), although I still need improvements. This 3 videos I discovered a year ago and they were very helpfull to me. So, thanks John.... Also, I must say I am curious. As non-British, I am not able to recognize accents. Are you maybe English, Wellsh, Scottish, Cornish?..... I guess this beach is somewhere on British coast or maybe Irish? Also, maybe you would know the answer: where are Neill Mackellow and Teddy Karoll from? Because I was waching their videos a lot as much as yours and I am really curious...... Neil must have been Irish. At least it sounds that way by his name.... All in all, sorry for annoying you with this comment and thanks one more time for sharing this videos..... I almost forgot, just one more question: I have none experience with multiplier reels. I notice in this video that handle of your reel is on right side. Does right handed person use multiplier reel with handle on right side or maybe it is because you are left handed?

Thank you for the kind comments, Ivan. I am English, as were Terry Carroll and Neil Mackellow. I live in the county of Essex, and the videos were filmed on the East Coast near Clacton-on-Sea. Terry lived in Sussex until he set up the Zziplex rod company in Kent. Neil was from the South-east of England.... Sussex I think. It is such a shame that both of them died quite recently.

Was given a copy of your book and yesterday had a practice session with the off the floor part of the cast. Already more confident in my cast with better smoother distances than my normal over the head thump. After a break of 20yrs im getting back into my beach angling and finding your info a great help. Yes the book is from the 80s but like a good single malt, some things need a little time to show their true quality. Great book, great vids thank you. Lowestoft, southwold in the distance?

Casting this way, you don't use side tension. Centrifugal brakes and/or magnetic control the reel very well. So does the right choice of oil. But above all, it's the quality of the casting technique that prevents backlash.

I stumbled upon this video by accident. I am familiar with competitive casting, but I know little about it. Is there a reason why you don't use a level wind reel? Does it reduce the casting distance? Great vid.

Still relevant and wonderful! Thanks John! Hey...did Penn sell a CT style 940 or did you make the bar? I have two that I love for lure fishing.
@fox22250
@fox22250 4 жыл бұрын
I made the bar from stainless steel. Penn did not make a CT version as far as I know. The little reel does wonderfully well within its limits. Shame there wasn't a larger version with more capacity and speed. But I guess it paved the way for the modern magnetic casting reels such as the Fathom CS.

Hi how far will a 8ft casting rod cast on the beach thanks
@fox22250
@fox22250 3 жыл бұрын
An 8ft rod can cast well past 100yd, but all things considered pendulum casting is easier for most people with a rod between 10ft and 13ft.
