John Mearsheimer, professor of Political Science at the University of Chicago, provides the first systematic analysis of lying as a tool of statecraft. He identifies the varieties, the reasons, and the potential costs and benefits, arguing that leaders often lie for good strategic reasons, while distinguishing between lying to another state and lying to one's own people.

It's great . Prof. , i wanted to ask you a question ? Russia surely has one of the most powerful militaries on the planet along with the most potent and numerous nuclear arsenal . While expounding on your theory of realism , applying it to help understand current Geopolitical events , you describe Russia as one of the 3 great powers on the planet . Is it solely Russia 's military prowess which affords Russia this privilege or are their any other distinctions which argue its case ? For in the other domains like economy or science and technology , international trade , political influence ... so forth , it's almost always middling

The truth will always prevail but it takes a person of integrity and courage to stand up for the truth like John. Thank you Sir

Truth rarely prevails in the US. I would rather say that nearly everything we “know” about our own country, our place in it and it’s history is not but a neatly woven fabric of lies.

I would even say that the truth is hard to find anywhere... Controversial parts of history is a good example of this, when option and interpretation change all the time.

I hit this presentation about a year ago on youtube, here. Guess what? It helped frame why and how leaders lie, which I'm using it to promptly identify the gist of the lie when leaders lie on my face. The 5 types of it, if I remember.

If one were to take John Mearsheimer’s entire body of work, which includes his theory of offensive realism, his observations regarding Israel and the Israeli lobby in the US, along with his observation that individuals cannot agree on first principals, and extrapolate and apply the logic that went into those findings and apply them to the biggest of big pictures as they relate to the human race as a species one would most likely come up with the “course”that I’ve developed. In the same way that John Mearsheimer is exactly correct about all of his observations about international relations along with some other tangential topics he’s weighed in on is the same way in which my “course” is exactly correct about the bigger picture regarding how we might best go about trying to manage our affairs as a species in order to try to give ourselves the best possible outcome in the future. Having said that, even though there are some things that are relatively simple with regards to how we should be changing or adjusting our behavior there are a few things that will be much more difficult to change. It’s my opinion that these are the types of things we should be discussing, debating and trying to tackle. It’s my opinion that the first, no brainer step would be to take John’s advice on the things that he’s weighed in on and get those things out of the way so that we can move on to trying to manage the other things that will be causing us problems. That’s my opinion…

@@Mkbshg8 Lying? He’s merely observing countries’ behavior. Just like you saying that what Russia is doing in Ukraine is blatantly out of order. That is your outlook of what happened, this is John J Mearsheimer. Leaders are humans and all humans lie especially for the benefit of their nation’s interests.
