John that was exquisite, flawless, and a beautiful arrangement. Chet would be very proud of you.

I attended a guitar camp where John was teaching. He said there's too much commercialization and competitive evaluation of music these days instead of just doing it for the joy of it. As an example, he talked about how so many beginning guitar students play a tiny bit, then say...." So.....do you think I have potential? " John said, "If you have to ask me that, it just means you haven't done anything yet!" Haha.....great guy, amazing teacher.

One could say the opposite is true: There are more people than ever in human history learning and playing guitar for the simple joy of it. It’s a global industry worth billions of dollars.

Boy that’s a beautiful arrangement. I love the lower register of that tune. Provides so much emotion for that song. You sir are a master of the strings and so deserving of Chet’s CGP award.

John, you were my classical guitar teacher in Mesquite, Texas in the early 70's in Community College... And I remember how well your little boy played back then.. I'm loving seeing you play again.....

I had heard this song many, many times and I thought it was okay. When I heard this solo guitar version, it became the most beautiful melody, I had ever heard on guitar and I play the classical guitar. How I wish I could find this version on D major.

I learned it in "G" like Chet. I think your arrangement has more room for melody and the ability to walk the bass. A wonderful sound and difficult to master. Now I have to learn it in "D".
@mymartind356 жыл бұрын
About a year ago I commented on this video. I've learned a lot in the span of a year, but I spent six and a half hours notating this song the way Chet did it. After extensive study, I've come to the conclusion that John's version is more melodic AND the chord voicings are much fuller. I'm not criticizing Chet, I just prefer Mr. Knowles version better.

Chet Atkins plays this song, Vincent, with a much fuller sound and truer to the note by note melody line actually sung by Don McLean, who recorded this song. Of course Chet's confidence shows in virtually every song he plays(ed)!
@bassman51236 жыл бұрын
Actually, this version is a bit truer to the original (at least for most of the song). Chet's version is also fantastic, but he takes a few more liberties from the actual vocal melody of of McLean. You need to listen again! (and compare both to the original) But both arrangements are fantastic regardless.
