I love the nods to Hanna-Barbera in this short. Bart as Huckleberry Hound, Lisa as Cindy Bear, it's not everyday you see characters such as them anymore.

I remember watching this episode as it aired, because I heard John K was doing an intro for it. I was a bit confused by it at first, and still kind of am. My assumption is this is a homage to an old Fleischer cartoon; with all the looping animations and the jazz chase sequence at the end.

He never did. The only cartoons he did that were watchable were ones where he had people telling him what to and what not to do, and he hated working with those people.

@@SuperbbConnor64 Not true at all. Even adult party cartoon looked amazing and that was just john k with a salary. The most likely cause for this style is simply john k becoming way too self indulgent in his own work and the supposed insanity his toons are known for. Or maybe since he doesnt really respect the simpsons he just did these animations for them in a rush.

I'll be very honest. This is better than the other Simpsons intro by John K. For one, the uncanniness of the animation fits well knowing that this is a halloween episode and it has more of a reason to be this over-the-top cartoony unlike the other intro. Though you could argue Hotel Transylvania did this better. However, like the other John K. intro, it's not without its faults. For example, I question why the Hanna Barbera masks are CGI. Back in 2008 in one of his blogs, he says he didn't like CGI, saying it's souless and it doesn't feel as natural as 2D animation. And yet, I see him use CGI with this, the other Simpsons intro, Cans Without Labels and there's even a GIF of a CGI shop in his Blogspot. It's also noticable that tweens were definately used, especially on the Frank Grimes monster. Notice when he's walking, he feet doesn't really match the steps on the ground, almost making like look like he's walking on ice or moon walking. But you could argue, these technical errors make sense since this is a halloween intro and sometimes uncanny animation can be scary.

Why does this look so much worse than John's work from the 80s and 90s?

He has full creative control because he made Ren & Stimpy, when R&S was made by a studio that could say "no" to John's bad Ideas. R&S was good because John *didn't* have full creative control ("Naked Beach Frenzy", the Adult Party Cartoon episode mostly comprised of "haha woman sexy sex", was originally written for S1). Things turned sour after John kept missing production deadlines (something quite common for John), so he got the boot after Season 2. Most of his later employers didn't know how shitty it was to work with John until they learned first-hand. The last full-on show he did was the previously mentioned Adult Party Cartoon, for reasons that should be self evident. Everything else has either been shorts, guest appearances, or commercials. Also he's a rapist pedophile, but that's unrelated to the quality of his work.

This is a huge step down in quality from his first couch gag, which was already pretty rushed. The only things I like are the song and the Grimes cameo.

Thanks for sharing!👍I was always a bit so-so with this intro tbh - I thought some of visuals were really well done and unique (the walk cycle at the beginning, the ghosts) and the overall fun and creativity put into it. But I found certain parts and drawings rushed and sloppy looking, especially towards the end. Still it was interesting seeing another reimagining of the Simpsons from John K. Do you by chance have the first couch gag...?

Bart: Trick or treat! Man: On this filthy night of evil Little gaudy beggars stroll As they lure ghouls, ghosts and goblins Hungry for their innocent souls. There is a hellish breeze a-blowin' As the children they pursue. You can hear their bellies moanin', They might even gnaw on you. Like you, he's trick-or-treating For some candies to unwrap! The Lord abhors your foul disguise, You thought to cloak your sin, But now you've lured this fiend from Hell Who craves your soul within! Children: He's hungry for your vitals. He likes you moist and ripe. And should he find you spiced with sin Then you're his favorite type. Men: He'll chew your juicy insides, Masticate you till you're pulp! Every little soul he'll swallow With a stinky-ass gulp! Homer: (laughs) There's no such thing as ghosts, you dumb kids! (the monster eats Homer's soul) Marge: And now it's time for the cartoon!

@@Commentman-43 That singer also did a very good impression of Thurl Ravenscroft, who is known for that distinctive baritone voice and was the voice actor for Tony the Tiger, the mascot of Frosted Flakes. Plus, those lyrics sound like something you'd find in some socially conservative Christian anti-Halloween propaganda thing, with a bit of swearing thrown in for extra edge.
