Makes more sense that she's more found family than actual family--if she was really her sister, she would just come up with a plan to be able to take guardianship over her sister. We've seen that exact dynamic in a lot of animation (Lilo & Stitch for example), so it's not a stretch. But found family, a kid she was fond of at the orphanage that's basically her little sister but not legally so, it checks out that it'd be more complicated.

I think my biggest gripe with this movie has always been how bland the main character’s design is. There are some really fun and unique designs in this movie, like Jeff the unicorn for example, but they seemed so afraid to make Sam look bad that they instead made her forgettable. You would think for a character who ONLY has bad luck she would have a few scrapes here and there that a bandage could cover up or some rips in her clothes, if not going all in with a wild “bad” haircut or something… idk it’s just a major missed opportunity to not add any story elements to her design :/

Same. I kinda wish it would’ve gone into the similar Yin Yang theory, about opposing forces existing harmoniously. I kinda get the movie’s point that bad luck does have its advantages sometimes, but the movie just felt so focused on saying bad luck is straight up evil, not something EVERYONE has to deal with on a daily basis, no matter how small. Good luck can easily be finding happiness in the smallest things, like being happy to be alive or just taking a walk and enjoying nature, knowing not everyone gets to experience those things so many people take for granted. The fact Sam has a job and is able to afford her own apartment without any debts or even risk getting fired because of her mistakes at work is honestly lucky, considering how many people get laid off for no reason even if they’re excellent at their jobs. Like if good luck was the only thing to exist, we wouldn’t be able to grow as people. As the saying goes, sometimes bad things happen for a reason. Yeah its never good when something bad happens, but more often than not its an experience to help you grow into a better person. Think of how many people who are born into wealthy families or don’t have financial issues tend to become terrible people because they’re so used to being in control.

I did think the movie had potential, it started really strong AND with a really strong concept I was interested in. A child who grew up in an orphanage now turning 18 and is legit just left all alone in an apartment with no family or support network at all because she just aged out... that made me go. "hang on... This is interesting... This is REALLY interesting and gut wrenching too. This is UP levels of messed up... I am really really interested in where you're going to go with this." And then it feels like that entire plot point is just dropped and it doesn't really matter for the rest of the movie and it's just like... Oh... Okay... That was so interesting and I was excited about what you were gonna do with that... Nothing then... Okay.... Cool... You could have done more with how this relates to the Cat and he was left alone and developed a hands off personality because of it, or met other people in similar situations who all handled it different, and let it be the emotional core of the movie as they find together in found family or... No? ... Okay then.

@@Chloe_thefoxstudios You know what just occurred to me... It actually would have been nice if the main character was a little bit more selfish. Normally I am pretty tired of these selfish angry characters that Hollywood is always producing. But think about it, this time... In this case... This poor girl has been up for adoption for about a hundred times, and every time not only wasn't she adopted, the potential parents didn't even show at all. Imagine how emotionally SCARRING that has to be. Here's this girl, keeping an upbeat attitude, doing everything right, probably working hard at school, and at exams always pulling the one question she didn't prepare for. She has done nothing wrong, and yet for some reason, the world itself seems to be set against her, because bad luck is just attracted to her. I could see her breaking down and yelling. "It's not fair! How is this fair?! I work hard, I clean up, I am always nice. And the world itself is engineered against me." And heck, if she was chasing the Lucky Penny for HERSELF. Would actually make a whole lot of sense, that she wants it because she lived her entire life being covered in bad luck for no reason, isn't it only fair she should be allowed to be lucky? And I could even see her trying to break the luck machine on purpose because in HER mind it would be a natural conclusion that it just isn't fair that some people are lucky without having earned it, and other people are unlucky without having done anything to deserve it. And then HER big character moment has to be the realization that all of these creatures shouldn't be punished for what isn't their fault either, heck MEETING the bad luck monsters could be the big turning point where she see how they live and how they turn it around and laugh at it, getting through it in a way she hasn't figured yet. And there are ways to turn bad luck into good luck, and there are unlucky things that happened to her that is turned into good luck things she doesn't want to be without. And she rises and fixes it. That... Could have been a very great movie, she could have been a very interesting character. But she's kind of nothing, sadly. I like that she's so nice and likeable, I want more characters like that back in entertainment, but this one time... It might have been better if she wasn't.

The movie kinda made me feel hopeless, like yes Sam is bland buti still kinda felt because all I could think was "so she just has to live her life with things constantly being hard for literally no reason and we're not gonna say why? But yeah it brings up a good question, this poor girl can't go swim without probably being in life danger, having her breakfast ruined, and probably can never have her bed sheet fit probably. And it's all for no reason at all, it is literally the world itself working against her.... She's one of the few characters that if she WAS angry and bitter and tried to destroy the luck place I... By comparison, Luck looks like a very generic Pixar film, which isn't good since it's NOT a Pixar film. Skydance, as of right now, lacks its own identity as a studio. Hopefully this is a case where they eventually grow into their own identity after a couple of releases, but if Skydance continues to put out generic movies like this, especially if Lasseter is just resting on their laurels, then they're going to struggle to compete not only within the industry, but within the public consciousness.

@bighand1530 true, but at the same time it should be established that it's not really their fault. I think Dazz might have said this or some other comments said this, but many studios are copying that Pixar style. And there is a certain amount of concepts that can actually be formed into ideas. Plus, Pixar is getting more people with tramua issues/heritage stories and etc. to create some movies of their own, and putting a unique animated spin on it, can make a great film. Sorry if this gets a bit controversial, but one of my new favorites they have made was Elemental. Did the marketing suck? Of course it did, you can't convince me otherwise. But the actual movie in my opinion was great. I like how real it seemed for an immigrant story, and making the elements of nature characters was actually pretty interesting, and Wade was probably the first fictional character, emotional wise, that I actually saw myself in. That of course is an opinion more than anything though.

This movie reminds me of the Warner Animation film Storks (2016). The main character is an pseduo orphan girl Tulip who had some bad luck when a stork tried to deliver her to her family, so now she works for the Stork delivery service, which has become a corporate nightmare. In the story, Tulip almost losing her job at the stork company plays into the theme of an orphan "aging out" of the system. I think the stork delivery company setting vs the lucky factory setting are similar in some ways. Tulip has an animal co-lead and together they help a baby girl find her family. I would definitely re-watch Storks rather than watch this movie.

This movie's animation style is one of the blandest most sterile-looking things I've seen in animation. I'm not trying to defend him for the terrible things he did, but you can't spread wrong information and say that it is all his fault this movie sucks. Skydance acquired a spanish studio and made it into Skydance Spain, it was NOT founded by Lasseter, what are you saying... My friends were already in the studio and he wasn't part of it yet, they literally had a huge meeting introducing him to the people, and was a ugly one too. They took advantage of Lasseter's demise to bring him in and try to make their animation division as big as possible. Many people left in protest, including directors and a lot of storyboard artists when he was presented to the crew. But this movie itself is not his creature, it was already going on before he came in. Skydance is now working on a lot of other projects, this one was small budget and kinda the worse one they had. Not sure how the rest will be, but yeah your title and your premise are kinda misleading. Dude I work in animation, this is not the first time I see one of your videos and it is filled with wrong information, you can't keep spreading fake news.

If I was looking at this objectively I can say at least a handful of positives: 1. The animation is pretty well done. It's very playful and has some stylistic quality for a company like Sky Dance, even if attempting to imitate a Pixar-esque quality. As an animation major myself, it looks like a lot of fun and it certainly is the best quality of the film. 2. The main character has a goal that makes sense. Even if the story doesn't quite make you feel that way, the story does attempt to remind you repeatedly that this is all in service of the promise Sam made to Hazel that she would help get her adopted. This ultimately is due to Sam not having any other goals that are more self serving. For example, why doesn't she want to keep the coin to help her fix her life before realizing she doesn't need it as much as Hazel? If your character is self-less from the get go, it undersells her personal journey because it's all in service to another character instead of developing any real growth. 3. The voice acting is good. The writing may not be, but I can easily see an interesting movie with the voices on display. Other than that, the story, concept and world is severely lacking. The motivations are clear, but there isn't enough to tie it all together in a way that engages you all the way to the end. It feels a little underwhelming and corporate for a world that is meant to be magical and full of culture. The ideas aren't expanded upon enough and what remains is a conveyor belt that goes from scene to scene, like it isn't trying to hide that there's a checklist of scenes to cover. I think it's also important to cover that Lasseter was the Head of Animation and produced Luck when he joined in 2019. Luck was announced in 2017 and likely went into pre-production around that same time. With that in mind, I can see how this would have affected the animation as I definitely recalled feeling like I was watching animation similar to Pixar's, but the story was likely already formed by then, meaning Lasseter likely didn't have a lot of creative direction here. I'm not supportive of Lasseter, only that I know that he is capable of turning a movie around given the lead. I don't think Lasseter was involved much with the story on this one.

It’s not like it’s just John’s film. It’s really the best way for individuals to learn and find what they could do better. Those people might not be at this studio forever, but I don’t think they deserve an unfair review because of this one guy that everyone has deemed as his film. It’s fair to mention the issues with John as to not ignore it, but still give it a fair review for everyone else involved. They had nothing to do with him being creepy.
