would've been such a slam dunk if the actor was actually part of the deaf community and not a hearing guy playing a deaf part, but given the 2000s of it all I would've been more surprised if he actually was deaf 😅. Weirdly, even though "you don't sound deaf" is absolutely a crazy thing to say, the vocal tones and enunciations that are characteristic of some deaf people's speaking voice is actually called a deaf accent! Handy for anyone to know if they ever feel a bit unsure on how to go about mentioning that, because "deaf accent" is the actual name but it's sort of like the name "little people" I guess - if you don't know about the community's preferred language and you earnestly don't want to offend but you don't know the wording to use, it could sound offensive in your head but that's the actual name. lol.

As a disabled person, that comment was extremely accurate. I can't even count how many times I've had people tell me I don't look disabled. Even when I tell people I'm struggling, they'll be like "doesn't seem like you're struggling to me". Her saying "you don't sound deaf" was for real the most realistic part of that entire movie

Yeahhh my best friend and I didn't talk or hang out for 2 years and then we somehow got back to hanging out almost weekly. But we didn't go to the same class and then I was out of school a long time so it's not that unbelievable that we'd grow distant. She also had her reasons at the time. True friends are the ones you can be apart from a long while and then come back to like barely anything happened.

As a girl who loved Bratz growing up, I have decided that The Cheetah Girls is actually the best representation of live action Bratz dolls. A diverse group girls living in an urban setting who are tight knit due to their music group, but still have their own interests and backgrounds. Their differences/competing interests causes strife between them in organic ways (not like just choosing to sit at different lunch tables lol), but ultimately prioritize their friendship in the end. In the sequels, they have international adventures. The characters are pretty comparable to the Bratz: Galleria = Sasha, Dorinda = Chloe, Chanel = Yasmin, Aqua = Jade? (Aqua isn't Asian though, and she's the most underdeveloped character of the group, so she's kinda the odd one out.) Would be interesting to have had The Cheetah Girls (2003) vs. Life-Size (2000) - a fairer match up I think! Bratz live action should have been compared Life-Size 2 because that one is trash lol

It does, and people DO say that kind of stuff in real life. Disabled people get doubted in their disability all the time for not "looking blind" or "sounding deaf". At best it is ignorant and disrespectful, at worst disabled people actually face discrimination by having their accomodation or access taken away. Ie being thrown out of a restaurant because of your service animal, because you looked at the person when they spoke to you and therefore must be a person with perfect vision faking it. Not like there are millions of people of various level of eyesight who would not be able to safely navigate their world without glasses or anything to help an able bodied person understand that perhaps legal blindness does not always mean 100% full darkness in the same way that some people who wear glasses can actually see pretty well at certain distances or by straining their eyes.

i actually really appreciate your coverage of the Deaf community and how important it is to have representation. I also appreciate the fact that you covered the fact that lip reading is not as easy as it tends to be portrayed in media. and yes, it would be better to have a Deaf actor to tell a more interesting story about Deaf identities. thank you

As a deaf adult, I agree- I’m 25 and I can barely lip read despite being “taught” how to do so when I was in public school since my family was ashamed and didn’t want to send me to a residential deaf school despite living in MD so close to DC lol. It’s so important to get real representation because harmful misunderstandings cause conflict between hearing folks and deaf/hard of hearing folks.

As a bratz girlie my heart aches that this masterpiece of a barbie film is compared to what they gave us with Bratz

NOT a deaf person myself, but I recently worked with someone who read lips for their primary form of communication and she could hold a conversation almost normally unless you weren’t looking directly at her (which occurs much more often than movies like to admit) or if you suddenly changed the conversation topic and she didn’t realize it. Very interesting experience, and she is literally one of the coolest people I’ve ever met. Girl has had a hell of a life lmao

The idea of a Deaf person being able to have a quote-un-quote normal conversation is offensive btw. Normality is dependent on each person and being Deaf doesn’t make you abnormal

I'm soooo happy to see a review for Life Size. It's been dismissed forever but especially since the craze of the new Barbie movie, like it simply never existed. Obviously Barbie is an iconic movie, but I was getting so disappointed to see Life Size not being mentioned. And there it was! This is why you are the Mayor. No cult classic is unnoticed.
