John Lennon - Dont Let it Die

The Song was originally a Hit For Hurricane Smith.Hurricane Smith worked as an engineer on all the Beatles' sessions between 1962 and 1965. This song was written when John Lennon joked that the Beatles were short of a song while recording the soundtrack for Help!
As he approached his 50th birthday however, Smith decided to indulge himself and record something. He'd previously written a song Don't Let It Die which he hoped to pitch to John Lennon, but when fellow producer Mickie Most heard the demo he encouraged Smith to record it himself. He did and it went to number two on the British charts.
He later asked John if he liked the song. John said he Loved and it would have loved to have recorded it. If only he'd asked him at the time.

This isn't the song offered to the Beatles for the Help soundtrack. Norman wrote it around 1969 On his 2004 album "From me to you", there is an interview track where Norman describes the writing of this song "I wrote this song at the end of a very tiring, hard day producing Pink Floyd. I always took them out for dinner in the evening, but on this one occasion it had been so tiring I asked them if they didn't mind going on their own. After they had gone, I went down into studio two and started doodling chord sequences and such and this tune or melody started to form, which turned out to be don't let it die. Then I had in mind John Lennon, I thought he could do a very good version of it. So I made a demo, singing it myself to give to John to see what he thought. One day I was sitting in my office when Mickey Most a famous producer passed by, so I called him in for his opinion. After I played it to him he said "if anyone brought that to me I would release it immediately" I told him I had it in mind for John Lennon, to which he replied "forget that, release it as is , it is a certain top 3 hit" He was right of course, it got to number 2."

Pretty good rendition of what it might have sounded like had John Lennon/The Beatles recorded it, It was a song John liked, Norman (Hurricane) Smith who wrote the song, actually offered the song to Lennon/The Beatles in the mid sixties, Lennon later persuaded Smith to record it himself, which he subsequently did, under the name Hurricane Smith, in 1971 and got to number 2 with it in the UK charts.

He did ask them at the time, and they were going to record it until they realized that since they'd abandoned "If You've Got Troubles" Ringo didn't have a track on the Help! album. Paul assured Norm that they'd put it on the next album, but obviously they didn't put it on Rubber Soul... typical for Paul. "Oh, sure, Mal, I'll make sure you get co-writer credit and royalties on 'Sgt. Pepper' and 'Fixing A Hole'."
