Just spotted this. My lovely old Neighbour Norman Smith from Pasteur Gardens. He was the sound quality behind the Beatles. Friends with his son Nicholas (Nick Smith). He gave me a copy of the first pink Floyd album as it came off the press. R.I.P Hurricane!!!!

Great tribute to a fine and talented gentleman. It seems almost miraculous to me how the Fabs were so blessed to have been shepheded by 3 such colossal talents; George Martin, Norman Smith and Geoff Emmerich..I know there were others but those 3 in particular. With the recent death of Geoff, all 3 men are now gone-back to the cosmic ocean. That is food for thought.

Norman Smith was such a genius and very kind person. I met him during the recording of Singapore Silk Torpedo by The Pretty Things. He did a fantastic job producing a lot of records by The Pretty Things, including their masterpieces S.F.Sorrow (1968) and Parachute (1970). R.I.P Norman!

Normal (as John called him) came close to being the only person to have the Beatles record an original song that he wrote. At the last moment George Martin said they needed a Ringo song instead. Smith ended up recording it himself and it became his first hit in England, "Don't Let It Die".

I read that in the Geoff Emerick (their engineer after Norman) book, Here, There, and Everywhere. He talks about learning engineering from Norman and being a tape op on some early stuff. I'm sure there's more to this interview, there's a DVD coming out called Beatles Stories. This is just a clip. I think the filmmaker did a great job, collecting the memories from other musicians. I'm looking forward to it.

All these interviews help to undermined again and again possibly a pool up to a dozen or more people whether they be the producer or engineers has contributed in one wayl or another towards the final sound or provided inspiration to the Beatles

I don't think Norman & Geoff get enough praise for their contributions, they gave The Beatles a lot of ideas & tips over the years that went uncredited, it wasn't all George Martin.. BTW - I thought it was Geoff Emerick that overdubbed the hi-hat on Can't buy me Love when it was wiped by mistake when they were editing the stereo mix for the Oldies but Goldies album ??
