Rick Mirer, Eugene Robinson and Cortez Kennedy were each fined $1,000. The money was donated to First Place (Seattle area homeless children outreach). Some quotes to the media from the following week: Dennis Erickson: "Obviously it wasn't done intentionally and they're great kids. But they made a mistake." Cortez Kennedy: "I'm not talking about hot dogs -- period." Rick Mirer: "You guys have already written enough about that." Eugene Robinson: "I had half a hot dog. It was a pretty expensive hot dog."

Funny thing is that his predecessor, Howard Cosell, is much, much more famous for essentially starting the nachos-at-the-game revolution. Off the top of my head, I think it was around 1980 at Texas Stadium (RIP), and he commented on the yummy snack being offered there. The world would never be the same. Well, the world of concessions, anyway. By 1985, no self-respecting concessionary would lead with anything but nachos on the menu.

What was the rationale for the fine? Today it seems totally normal for players to eat on the sideline, especially in a preseason game. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen baseball players get handed food by training staff in the dugout and no one seems to mind.

I think the rationale was they didn't want ayers throwing up during the game which is why they didn't want people eating in the sideline as John Madden mentioned there stomachs could get upset. I thought I read somewhere that's why they got rid of smoking and eating on the sidelines back then.
