The first two Madden games on the Genesis are all I need. Love the music in the first game and would really enjoy hearing a well done arrangement of those tunes with real 'lectric geetars. That ambulance in the 2nd game was just hilarious, causing more more damage than the injured player had sustained... well not really but I just loved the absurdity of it all. I think the first few games have my favorite field graphics as well. Some of the later games had more detailed grass but the perspective seemed off. I would play so much of this and Lakers vs Celtics when they both came out. EA seemed like a brand new titan on the console and they really elevated the Genesis.

Very much so, you'd grab the latest EA game pretty much knowing you were gonna get something different. Something you'd not experienced on a console before. The same can be said for almost all other sports games after around 2005. They just seem to have the IT factor lost along the way. With the limitations of the 16 bit machines hardware, 90-98 console sports games have never been rivaled on the Genesis & Super Nintendo.

During my childhood and angst teenage years, my dad, grandfather and me would all watch football and when Madden was doing commentary - especially around thanksgiving - we all really not just enjoyed it but respected his input. He was part of the family tradition. Switching gears here, any interest in covering the EA NHL series? I played the ever loving hell out of those. No other hockey game compared. It brought and taught hockey to so many that would’ve never had much exposure to the sport. I know because in SE Texas, hockey pretty much doesn’t exist - but it damn sure did for me and my friends on the Genesis. It was also the only game I had lots of time with the four player tap. This is another fantastic review that really takes me back, SLX. Thank you! I really appreciate your channel and only wish I’d found it sooner.

I find it funny that Steve Young was throwing right handed for so many years in a row. It can't be an oversight; there must've been some technical limitation. My idiot brain just says reverse the sprite, but I don't know the first thing about making video games.

Tecmo Superbowl is still the best game from that era. It was the first console game to have injuries, substitutions and a full season with playoffs and a Superbowl. The thing I liked about Madden is they just improved upon some of those things. I used to love the ambulance that would come on the field and run over everyone lol. I also remember if you did a sweep play and got behind the defense all you had to do was spam the high step button and they couldn't stop you.

I am really excited to watch this episode, Madden Football was the #1 game in the UK Magazine "Mega" for the Mega Drive in their top 100 games. I absolutely used to wait impatiently for the next Madden every year as a teenager for the Sega Genesis (which looked and played very different on the SNES), my 2 favourites are Madden 94 for the overall presentation, graphics and playability but Madden 95 is a close second because it has the windowless passing and the 2 point converts. Madden 97 on the Sega Saturn and Madden 2000 on the Playstation are also excellent Madden games (Ironically, I think Bill Walsh 95 is the ultimate football game for the Genesis as it combines the best from Madden 94 and Madden 95). We don't say "we want to play football video game, we say let's play some Madden!"

Please do the same with the Sega Sports football games :D (Joe Montana, Prime Time). This is a fantastic summary! Love it how you dis the Cowboys lol! And play with Montana in Kansas City. I'd like to point out that Madden '96 was even faster, and considered by some to have controls that felt too loose. Also, it's perhaps worth mentioning that starting with Madden '94, the series is often considered better on the SNES.

I know absolutely NOTHING about football but this retrospective was really fun to watch! The only sports game I ever played was NHLPA '92 when I was 9 because my parents watched Quebec Nordiques games, but when they left, the little interests I had with sports, any professional sports, left with the Nordiques to Colorado. Long story short, not a sports guy! But it's interesting to hear someone talk about their favorite sports - especially when it's on Genesis! PS.... Why didn't a big company like EA create their own music tools for Genesis, instead of using GEMS???

Ooh… I’d really like to see a video on some of the other American Football games on Genesis, such as the Joe Montana series, NFL Quarterback Club (inc the 32X version), Tecmo Super Bowl, Mutant League Football and any more obscure ones I may have missed.

Disappointed there was no section on the ambulance driving on the field to pick up one injured player, running over the entire field of other players in the process. One of the funniest things in gaming history.

Can't remember if it was the original or the second game, back in 1991, but watching Madden in action was impressive to say the least. I remember the huge let down it was when it was ported to the SNES. Same went for NHL 93.

@Dean Satan hahaha, it's only because it was improperly ported and not optimized for the SNES. 😘
