We’d have matchups like Marciano versus Holmes, in which you’d think Holmes would wreck because of his reach, but the game compensated for this by giving short-armed fighters like Marciano immense power. You could pick anyone and have a chance if you used your head. And the fights, between fairly evenly matched players, would go deep into the championship rounds. Great game. Back in the 8-bit and 16-bit days, sports games were an important part of a gaming library, in my opinion. I had lots of fun with Bases Loaded and Baseball Stars on the NES, Walter Payton Football and Reggie Jackson Baseball on Master System, and Joe Montana Football and EA's NHL games on Genesis. Sports games were good to have when you were in the mood to play some video games, but not necessarily something specific or something that would require more time or focus. The Genesis was a great platform for that. I wasn't hugely into sports games, but my brother was. I did, however, get NBA Live '95 myself. But I remember trying to prevent my brother from getting EA's NHL '95, I believe it was, and get Sega's NHL All Star Hockey instead. I knew maybe three people who already had NHL '95, and in every case it was a glitchy mess. My brother ended up getting it anyway -- he had to get it every year for a while -- and he ended up with lots of glitches too. They definitely did not play test that game much.

@NoSpamForYou4 жыл бұрын
@@Old_Man_Jay The Mega Drive was actually behind in Japan. The Famicom and the PC Engine were both bigger there, and Super Famicom overshadowed it as well. And it wasn't SEGA of America that screwed the company, it was Japanese pride and conceit. It really is good for them that sepuku isn't a thing anymore or SEGA would have become extinct instead of just becoming a 3rd party software developer. SoJ basically resisted any good idea proposed by SoA. The 32X was originally going to be an actual full on console, but SoA leader suggested making it an add-on. So it was only a $150 failure instead of a $300 failure right before the $400 failure that was Saturn. SoA also wanted to go with Silicon Graphics for their Next Gen platform. SoJ played around with the idea for a while wasting time for everyone, then made the POS 3D saturn architecture. Nintendo slid in and partnered with SGI and the N64 was born. TRUE, Bernie Stolar did mess up the longevity and variety of games for Saturn (and dreamcast) in America. For Dreamcast, SoJ also jacked around with development. They wasted time and resources having SoA develop a competing platform (3Dfx based hardware codenamed 'Black Belt' ) before "deciding" to go with the all Japanese based 'Katana' design. So SEGA contributed to screwing 3Dfx over and driving them out of business. We might have had a competitive 3 company graphics card industry with fair prices but for SEGA of Japan

For me, the Genesis was hands down "THE" Sports console... I kept myself busy with Tommy Lasorda Baseball after launch when Altered Beast quickly got a little boring as an arcade port... WCS wasn't too bad for its time either... It's just one of those games that you can re-analyze after so many years. You can definitely say that EA Sports had its Golden Age during this era... Madden and Madden '92? Gold. Lakers vs. Celtics and it's follow-up Bulls vs. Lakers (and the NBA Playoffs) each kept me entertained for months! I had such a good experience with those games that when NHL Hockey came out, I bought it the week it came out. Even renting the PGA Golf games they released were pretty solid and entertaining, IMHO. The sports games of that era were immersive (at least as much as they needed to be), and yet still simple enough to play. With the advent of technology (and more buttons on the controllers), at some point, most Sports games just became too difficult to play competitively in the years that followed... That's not to say of the "roster update" (and shut down the online servers right after the season ends) mentality that most sports games have adopted these days - that's why most have list their lustre over the years. The only one that keeps me coming back is the Show franchise, but that's because I've always been a huge baseball fan.

Because the sega saturn's hardware was based off of the am-g 2 arcade hardware that ran all of their arcade games at the time. I wasn't too big on sports titles, But I did indeed play all of them. Gameday was very big at the time, and was enough to sell the ps1 alone. The graphics were mind blowing at the time, and so was the sound. But no sega follow up from the amazing sega sports folks was a "nail in the coffin". Also nfl blitz on n64 was dope.

Sega Sports Talk Baseball is still one of my favorite baseball games. It's up there with Base Wars on the NES.

I love how you come to support the saturn but aren't afraid to speak on its flaws, I too had a saturn and understand it wasn't perfect but that didn't stop me from enjoying my time with it over the playstation.

I never did get to play that version of Joe Mantana from the commercial. Also, there was an exclusive NCAA basketball game on Genesis featuring Coach K of Duke. Ran on the NBA Live engine and was likely the best bball on the platform.

Evander Holyfield boxing was so much fun to play but it was really hard to get up when you get knocked down.
@buckroger64564 жыл бұрын
Definitely one of the best boxing games. Loved how when you finally became the champ the game still kept going. Then once you were past your prime it got harder to keep your stats up.

Use to play the Arnold golf game a ton at a friend's house with his dad. Never cared about golf at all till I started playing the game with him and his dad.

Lots of memories playing Arnold Palmer's Tournament Golf at my brother's house. We weren't very close in our youth as he was 7 years older but we got some good bonding time in with this game later on in the 90s before he passed away.

If I'd of played Joe Montana 94 anymore than I did I'm pretty sure my dad would have kicked me out of the house. It didn't hurt that like you say 95 sucked. I remember being so hyped and getting it the first day. The next day I bought Madden 95. Great video, however I prefer the Jennifer Capriati Tennis on Genesis.

The International Superstar Soccer Deluxe game was the one we admired the most because it looked the closest to a Play Station 1 soccer game. The NBA games were also excellent.

This dude forgot about the coolest feature of the NFL95, primetime, and '98 football games: TRASH TALKING on Defense! Pressing the C button (or whatever) made the player you're controlling taunt the offense.

I love how knowledgeable you are about the history of sega, I always was an nintendo gamer, but I always wondered what the he'll happened to sega, its so sad that they didn't survive, the battle, I always wanted a sega genesis, but i stuck with my nintendo snes and nes 64, I was disappointed with the nes 64, thought the system was weak, compared to the Sony Playstation, eventually, I just became a Playstation gamer, to this day, I love you're videos, man there awesome, thank you!

Awesome video, especially from an Australian perspective. The Sega Sports titles were not as big here (especially Joe Montana, because American football is quite niche in Australia), but as the Master System was a big hit Sega were able to parlay that into Mega Drive success. I do have one quibble - which is rare for your videos - Mediagenic, mentioned as failing to develop the engine for Joe Montana Football, actually was Activision. They ill-advisedly rebranded themselves in the late '80s/early '90s. It wasn't until about 1993 that they fully re-established the Activision brand, around when Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure was first announced alongside River Raid and Kaboom remakes.

The basket ball in Pat Riley Basketball is comically large! I could never get into the sports titles that followed the 16-bit generation, so I still play these games to this day. Favourite is the original PGA Tour Golf... such a chill game.

I use to just run around in a square and wind the clock down in Joe Montana 93 Sports Talk Football. Lol. Good times. I also remember it being one of the only games I could randomly guess the passcode to get access to the playoffs.

jsttv they didn’t launch with a 3D sonic.. say sonic adventure just with 32 but graphics and full all sports sim line up .. With their virtua finger & Daytona .. Saturn should have been a 64 bit dreamcast. With analog added to the six button and shoulder buttons without changing the shape too much .. that’s as all we damn needed ..

kiam- 48hour records don’t forget releasing the Saturn 4 months early w/o much notice. Moreover, the high price point, and lack of third party support.

World Championship Soccer was also released in Europe (at least in the UK) as World Cup Italia '90. It was one of the 3 games on the first Mega Games pack, and I spent hours playing it with my dad the morning he brought home my first Mega Drive. Despite that, I can't really give it much love looking back.
