They all knew each other. It was quite the soap opera.. It wasn't so much of a knack, but a matter of necessity when nearly everyone was partying. If stories are true, Peter Green was only in the Bluesbreakers for 3 days, so having this audio is rare indeed.

Only Englishmen got to hear early Clapton, Green, and Beck, while Americans heard the original blues guitarists first. The luckiest people were the ones who traveled with the best British bands to the U.S. that got to share stage with those bluesmen. I wish I could say I was one.

Some of the sweetest slow blues guitar playing you'll ever hear. The 1959 Les Paul Standard that Peter Green is holding and playing here is considered by many to be the most legendary of all 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standards. After playing it for many years, Peter sold it to Gary Moore, who then played it for many years. It's refered to, appropriately, as the Peter Green/Gary Moore Les Paul. A few years ago, it sold for $2.2 million. Kirk Hammett of Metallica now owns it.

Peter Green himself thought it was not such a great guitar "It didn't even work" he said. I thought some rich geek owned it and played it on a youtube video, getting a lot of thumbs down? I wonder what happened to the one stolen from Clapton in the early days. Somebody somewhere has that thing possibly not knowing whose it was.
@larrycarver5922

Yeah, that 1959 Les Paul of Clapton's has never shown up, and is still a mystery. You could be right about somebody having it and not even knowing what they've got. I'm pretty sure it's the one he famously played on the Beano JM & The Bluesbreakers album. If it ever shows up, it will probably break the record for a guitar sale.

As a novice blues guitar player, listening to good players either makes me want to throw my guitar out a window or inspires me to step outside of the "boxes" if you will. This inspires me. The Gary Moore Fire Alarm Blues interview for Guitarist, however, still makes me want to throw my guitar!

Peter Green played a across a wider range of dynamics, whereas his predecessor Eric Clapton had, by his own admission, an angry, egotistical and aggressive approach. Still, Green could rip out with aggression whenever he felt it applied. As for discussion in the comments about guitars: Word originally was that Green gave the Les Paul to Gary Moore, though it was later confirmed that he sold it for the (approx.) price he had paid for it, which was around the £100 mark. Moore later replaced the pickups with hotter models though after some years re-inserted the originals, likely when he changed direction with 'Still Got the Blues'. Though one comment here mentions that Green's guitar was later sold for $2 million, current Kirk Hammet of Metallica, claims he got it for less than $500,000. Green's legacy doesn't have the provenance to attract super-high sums. Ditto Snowy White's Les Paul. He had it up for $1.2 million but it didn't sell. He might still have it. As for the mention elsewhere here about Clapton's 'Beano' Les Paul; he actually had two consecutive Les Pauls - the first nicked, the second suffering a broken headstock and faulty repair leading him to using a '64 cherry red SG that he gave to George Harrison after the psychedelic paint job administered by Dutch art collective The Fool (also painted the Beatles Apple Boutique and, I believe, John Lennon's Rolls Royce) proved unsatisfactory due to the paint becoming sticky as it had not been sealed (ditto Jack Bruce's Fender VI bass). (It later went to George Harrison, to Jackie Lomax, to Todd Rundgren, before the latter sold it to raise money to pay taxes...by which time he had a matching replica from a fan in Japan that he still plays today). Joe Bonamassa claims that Clapton's 'Beano' LP is owned by an American collector. Bonamassa's info came from friends who claim to have seen the guitar. They also claim it is a '59, not a '60, which is the general assumption given its thinner-than-typical '59 neck. Or possibly it is the second LP. Possibly that is a '59. For those unfamiliar with Clapton's acquisition of those two guitars, the story is this: Clapton and the Yardbirds were playing with Zoot Money's Big Roll Band at London's Flamingo Club. Pre-show, Clapton saw Money's guitarist Andy Somers (later Andy Summers of Police fame) had a sunburst Les Paul. Being familiar with the look and sound of Freddie King's gold top from an album, Clapton was enamoured. Somers told Clapton there was another one at Rose-Morris (I believe) on Charing Cross Road, just minutes' walk away. Its price? £80. When that was stolen during early Cream rehearsals, Clapton pestered Somers to sell him his. With the LP not working properly, and his preference for single coils (he had a white Tele by then), he sold it for treble the amount he paid for it. BTW, during his Cream days Clapton acquired a red Les Paul that he also passed along to Harrison. It had belonged to John Sebastian of the Loving Spoonful, who had a shop sell it for him (he also played a LP Goldtop). Rick Derringer, then with the McCoys (later with Johnny and Edgar Winter as player/producer and producer of Weird Al Yankovick's big hits) purchased it. He had the Bigsby removed and the body refinished in red. He didn't like the result (I assume that being a small chap he also had the neck shaved) so had the shop put it back up for sale...which is when Clapton purchased it. Interestingly, when Clapton skipped a gig in North London and Mick Taylor offered his services (using Clapton's gear, which was on the stage), wrestless young Eric had gone to see the Loving Spoonful at the Marquee club in central London's Soho district. After Peter Green's departure from the Bluesbreakers - he got the gig as a result of playing three gigs with the band when Clapton buggered off to Greece in autumn '65 - young Taylor recognised the anyonymous blues band looking for a guitarist via the Melody Maker newsaper and was immediately offered the gig based on him filling in on that one occasion. After his own LP was stolen, Taylor got the sunburst with Bigsby that Keith Richards had used extensively during the earlier days of the Stones...which was one of the first occasions any of us saw a Les Paul. Not much content in the linked feature, but Bonamassa has introduced the possibility of at least one of Claptons LPs being alive and well. www.musicradar.com/news/guitars/exclusive-eric-claptons-beano-les-paul-is-in-us-collection-claims-joe-bonamassa-640041

Excellent article...not being a wise guy...love all that info. I agree ultimately with the range of dynamics in Peter's playing yet I hear the unmistakable influence of Eric here in this time period and Peter's Blzbrkrs days. Certainly Peter himself was a great fan of Clapton at this time by his own admission. For my money this style of playing along with Bloomers is where it's at. It's unabashed and direct and simple at times but also subtle and sweet. Phenomenal!! Not easy to do ,at all, I think.

A nice piece of history, probably a great experience at the gig itself but listening to the boring and repetitive noodling on the guitar is just...boring. I was waiting for the Hammond organ solo but the same old B B King lick kept interrupting The Les Paul is the same as every other Les Paul, the sound is more to do with the vintage Marshall amp into 20 watt Greenbacks. So many myths busted when you listen, and watch, carefully.
