I can't tell you how tired I am of this discussion. Under every single John Mayer video some idiots have to constantly compare Mayer to SRV, Clapton, Hendrix, B.B. King,... I mean - what is the point of doing that? First of all, it seems like people cannot get over the fact that Mayer is a undoubtedly great guitarist. You just can't say that he's a "bad" or average player. That's just not true! Simply judging him on his technique, speed, touch and tone this guy is a fucking great guitarist and far above the average player. I also think that blues lovers and Mayer critics can't get over the fact that he is so versatile. He came from Acoustic pop, went on to the blues and now ended up making two country records. Imagine SRV writing a pop song - I don't know if he could pull it of. And he doesn't have to but all I'm saying is that Mayer succeeded in every single genre by winning Grammy's, getting great feedback by other artists and selling millions of records. To me that is what makes him such a great musician that he is a pure pop artists, while being able to play a fucking solid and beautiful blues (Out Of My Mind), and on top playing some laid back country without using all the cheesy lyrics. People can't wrap their head around someone who can do that. Step into another genre and just cracking it. Many blues players dedicated their life to Blues music and there's nothing wrong with that. But there's this Mayer guy who dedicated his life to all sorts of music so he can't be the master of every single genre he plays. Well, he's definitely on his way to become a true legend if you ask me. Then thirdly all those people judging him and his guitar skills constantly try to argue against Mayers unassailable recognition by other artists. Clapton doesn't just say things like: 'He is a master guitar player.' for no reason. He isn't inducting SRV in the Hall Of Fame for no reason and so on. And then there's the big discussion over his private life. Oh my God. Get a life people! When I'm interested in music I don't care about who's girl this guys sleeping with. And if you're that kind of guy you at least gotta respect him for sleeping with a list of women many of us would be happy to only shake hands with. Imagine you're getting overpured with money and fame in your early twenties. How would you react? It's just plain naive and stupid to judge him on mistakes he made without us being in his position. Anyway, that's just what I've been thinking. EDIT: Thanks for the likes and the lively discussion. I also realize that I did the exact same thing by comparing Mayer to other guitarist. I wrote this 5 years ago and times changed. Lesson learned. Still loving Mayer though. Cheers. :)

I like how Mayer starts soloing and Clapton smiles, it's approval. Clapton wouldn't be up there if he didn't enjoy Mayer's work.

Man, you get it. Do I like everything I hear, no, but then again I don't have to be a negative a hole about it to the world, lol, I just tune into the players I like and appreciate that I get to listen to them at all.

Jim T YES. Feed the positive, ignore the negative, thats what I'm all about in music. Of course there are guitarist who play faster and stuff, but I don't really dig that. I dig the groovy feeling (Mayer clapton hendrix lukather etc.) but I 100% respect people who enjoy listening to the faster players :) Everyone has their own taste, fortunately!

i never really understood why people have this uncontrollable need for comparing guitarrists that shouldn´t be compared... Clapton is Clapton. On the other hand i appreciate and admire John Mayer and the musiciens that always accompany him, it takes a lot of work to get where he is. Enjoying the overall quality of the band and the great musical interaction between the musiciens, that to me, yes, is the most beautiful thing about listening to music.The concert "Where the light is" by John Mayer is a great example of that...

mayer is a very under rated guitar player... he seems to be at his best when he plays with clapton
@SpencerShimon2210 жыл бұрын
These comments are rather annoying. Clapton is a great guitar player and John mayer is a great guitar player as well. You old timers who are stuck in "the good ol' days" type of reaction, are missing the point of music. Music evolves and the 70's aren't here anymore, it's 2014 so you should appreciate an artist like John Mayer keeping that kind of music/generation alive. John Mayer IMO is easily the best performing artist of the 20th century and if you think I'm wrong, go to one of his concerts. He's an amazing musician and one that deserves more credit from you old school mentality people.

I'm not old I'm irritated that there r tons of great guitarist that u never heard of because they stood their ground and stuck with blues rock. Johns a sellout. I admit though in this performance he does outshine Clapton but recently he is getting boring and old himself. Is he sick or something. Last cd wat a friggin boring mess. Do u know Chris Duarte, Mato Nanji of Indigenous, Jonny Lang very humble btw, Kenny Wayne shepherd, the list is endless Eric Gales, etc etc etc.

Go to an EXPERIENCE HENDRIX concert. Than get back to us. Lots of great guitarists out there that are young.

Come on man, I can respect his playing, but not the best live performing artist. Page could still come on stage and be easily the best living legend to have one of the biggest impacts on rock and roll period.
@truthurts16926 жыл бұрын
spencer no offence intended, but mayer was like 19 in 2000, and had had little success. So as to being the best performing artist of the 20th century, I think he's not in the running (you DO know we're in the 21st century, right?). If he is to turn out to be a legend, it will be after decades of sustained high quality, ground-breaking work. It is annoying to me that you millennials who are still wet behind the ears are ready to tag every flash-in-the-pan as the greatest ever. Live a few years and see if you don't start to take a longer view of things, and put the right-now in perspective. You have no concept of 'ever', or even of 'the century'. He is a very gifted musician, and time will tell whether he is great.
