nah, he's perfectly qualified and he's demonstrating it with subtlety. i'm not a john mayer fanboy, but i do believe one of john mayer's best traits as a musician is that he's a guitar maestro who doesn't feel the need to steal the shine from a composition (sometimes to a fault, as that's what a lot of nerds want to see). he typically chooses clean lines and tasteful flourishes over crowbarring showy playing that's clearly out of place

The difficulty is mainly why it sounds off, but to say John is overqualified for this like the original comment said, when he's pitchy is just bullshit. Also, why put a performance on at this level, in front of this many people, and not rehearse harmony lines (if they did indeed not practice beforehand).

If I remember right, Ed sheeran has a tenor voice type and john mayer has a baritone voice. Plus their timbre and tone is quite different. Hence why their harmonies don't sound as good as some may expect. Much respect to these amazing musicians!

I play music full-time for a living as a solo LoopingArtist, I never wanted to do any of Ed’s songs because they’re always so simple, 3 chord songs, etc. But sitting here, stoned, watching this, feeling the groove, I’m definitely surprised how good this song is. Or maybe it’s because it’s John and his band backing Ed up. Either way, this is probably the best guitar solo I’ve ever heard John play! Jesus, this is pretty amazing.

Sheeran sounds amazing. John's voice is amazing as well for his style (naturally) but harmonizing is a different beast and not every great singer's voice will always blend well with another. I think that's all we're seeing (or hearing here). I think John knows it too by the looks of it. It's all good. Just live music baby!

Ed is perfectly on pitch. So is John, just that the natural contrasts in their tones meant that without better prep, John wasn’t able to harmonise well with Ed. I think if they’d traded verses instead of trying to harmonise, it’d be clearer, but there we go. What a solo from John though, and Ed delivered a pretty much studio-perfect vocal.

@@jakestasil5506 If you say "He is singing on his guitar", is a metaphor. If you say "literally", is no more a metaphor by definition
