I am 17 and i witness what other kids listen to daily... I absolutely love John Mayer (have seen him 4 times)... Derek Trucks is phenomenal... They brought light to guys like SRV and Buddy Guy and B.B. and Clapton for me... I have never been more proud to show off my music because i am showing things like the original recording of "Cold Shot" or "Crossroads" and live versions of "Scuttle Buttin' "... I love the blues and it surely isn't dead

You're right about how Hendrix got a lot of his act from Buddy Guy. People who are fans of a particular musician often go into excess when describing the uniqueness of their favorite performer, especially the Hendrix fans. We all learn from the people who came before us, including Buddy Guy, he got a lot of his act - playing behind the head, his back, between his legs - from Eddie "Guitar Slim" Jones!
@Lenny084416 жыл бұрын
It is good to see Double Trouble in videos again...such a solid rhythm section, any guitarist would probably give up just about anything to have a group backing them as solid as Chris and Tommy!!

@juanrules Actually, Jimi smashed the original guitar to smithereens on stage at Monterey. You can see the pieces of it in the Hendrix display at the EMP is Seattle. Fender Custom Shop produced a limited edition of this famous guitar, which is probably what John is playing.

the thing about john mayer is, he went into a record studio wanting to be a solo guitar player and to be recorded. The label said they need a singer/guitar player, so here he is. I respect that he didn't give up. He made some down right chick songs. I respect his guitar playing though

Buddy Guy set the pace for all modern guitarists in my opinion. Hendrix actually stole a lot of his stage antics from Buddy Guy. Playing behind his head, playing with his teeth, playing between his legs......all that was done first by Buddy Guy, whom Hendrix used to cancel his own shows to go see in concert. I'm a Hendrix fanatic, but Buddy Guy was a huge influence on a lot of modern guitar legends (Hendrix, SRV, Clapton) and was a huge source of inspiration.
@mcmeister8916 жыл бұрын
Thank you for laying it out. I agree with you completely. You gotta remember that Mayer also has to make a living, and his pop records are what did that for him. Now he's got the ability and the finances to branch out and experiment and put out new sounds with his name attached to them. I think mayer will bring new fans to the blues and there's nothing wrong with giving the blues more respect.

We might as well set the record straight. John Mayer isn't SRV and he isn't Jimi Hendrix...but he is a damn fine guitar player. You can debate all day weather or not he has credibility but at the end of the day he is still a great musician that was finally able to set himself apart from his pop albums with Continuum. He's an accoplished blues player and we should enjoy him and thank him for bringing it back into the spotlight. He's had abig impact and I know that it will continue to get better.
@Katter8515 жыл бұрын
Easiest way to sort out this little mess is that Buddy Guy is a legend in his own right but to some true 'Blues' lovers still a youngster...John Mayer is just the new breed, (a young Eric Clapton) maybe not in a true blues form but without a doubt the closest thing our generation can relate too. I don't think you can really compare him other than he's a very talented guiraist and he takes influences from people like Buddy and BB King...i bet we have this same converstaion in 30 years re John!
@Sinsaku16 жыл бұрын
I think comparing the two is pointless. They both excel in their own genres of music. If you think about it Buddy Guy rocks the guitar, and John Mayer has an awesome voice. What's there to argue about?
@thndrcypher16 жыл бұрын
Well said. +1
@mcmeister8916 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you're right with your descriptions of Hendrix and SRV. Mayer, I'd say, is like an apologetic kind of blues. I mean, he comes from a pop background so it is gonna be a little less classic blues or whatever you wanna call it. Though "Gravity" and "Out of My Mind" are straight up sick.
@HomesickBluesBand14 жыл бұрын
I don't like John, but i appreciate what he's doing for the music, he is commercializing the blues. Every generation has his own of that kind, Eric was the first (and the best) perhaps, than SRV, today it is Bonamassa and Mayer maybe... For the few, it will be the way through them to the great blues giants like BB, Muddy, Howlin' Wolf...

@juanrules : It's not actually Jimi's guitar. It's a Fender Custom Shop copy of Jimi's Monterey guitar which, of course, was burned to a crisp and busted up. Pieces of it can be seen in the Hendrix gallery at the EMP in Seattle.

@yeahright123go I think the reason people dislike Mayer is not because of his playing; indeed he is a good guitarist. Rather, it is because he is perceived to be egotistical, and sometimes his arrogance is reflected in his stage presence and music. The "greats" such as SRV, Hendrix and Clapton, were/are humble men, and part of what made them great is their genuine personalities. Mayer is not considered to be humble in that respect. Don't shoot me Mayer fans, this is merely an observation!

Fuck, imagine having buddy guy sit in on one of your songs, I know mayer's played with a lot of blues icons on old blues tracks, but this is something else, must have been one of the greatest moments in his life - next to fucking jennifer aniston. And the ignorant people who say he's a bad guitarist aren't even worth arguing with.

@Dogheadj I know. I think its pretty well documented. Being one of Jimi's signature performances.

For me, there is no "better", only a "different". It's a thing of individual liking. I like mayer and his sound a lot, because his sound is so "thick". But SRV, Hendrix, Buddy Guy and all the others are also great players, no matter which licks they copied. Just enjoy this incredible music!
