I really dig this period of his music. The guitar work is complex and has a jazzy feel to it. Also he sounds confident and hopeful. His bluesy phase is great too (like that on Continuum). If he would just do stripped down versions of his music that would be awesome. For example when he released born and raised, it was ok but over produced and not something I can personally listen to. He releases those vevo videos of him doing the same songs on the acoustic and its unbelievable, like some of the greatest stuff ever imo. I have always wondered how he feels about it. Does that overproduced sound really help with sales? I was lucky enough to see him on the room for squares tour and when he toured with the trio following heavier things. Those shows were great! He is still the best songwriter who ever lived, please give the people what they want John lol.

Because 'No Such Thing' also starts with a major7 chord played in the same shape. This one starts on an F as opposed to an E, only a half step apart. In less musical jargon- by removing this from his catalog, it makes/made 'No Such Thing' stand out more by not using elements present in other songs in the catalog. The slappy thumb lines are also reserved for the live versions of Neon.
@gearsofwar21128 жыл бұрын
Matt Orlando he also utilizes the Emaj7 in St Patrick's Day. There are many ways to play the chord around the fretboard. I think he just likes the chord. It could just be that he didn't like the song enough or didn't think it would sell. May not have anything to do with the similar sounds. Who Says and Stop This Train sound similar and he released both. Just a thought
@pievancl54577 жыл бұрын
the emaj7 is a great chord. i learned to love it from jm songs and now it always seems to creep into my own songwriting. esp the open version he uses in st patricks day.

God I remember the entire crowd singing the whole song with him, word for word, at nick's fat city in pittsburgh, 2001. An entire crowd knew the words to a song that was never recorded. The song writing displayed here and at Eddie's Attic makes anything he put out after Room for Squares sound like a different artist... a much worse songwriter. I like this John Mayer. I hope that he, in time will come around like he said he'd always do.

This comment stunned me for a second, then thinking over is almost true in some areas as far as lyrics go, strange the paths we take.
@willritter40768 жыл бұрын
fully agree... John front-loaded his best work to establish himself as a star (and who can blame any artist for doing that?). The 2003 follow-up album was strong, but ever since then, John has only done a great song here and there amid the gobs of stunningly bland stuff that he apparently records to satisfy his fat contract... i just hope the dude is happy, because he's earned the right to it.
@colleenpate14847 жыл бұрын
I gotta disagree. I think there's a stroke of brilliance hidden somewhere at LEAST once in each of his songs.
@Arrezinal7 жыл бұрын
He actually states in an interview that "if you wanna make it you better be damn sure play your best music on your demo and debut album and if you don't you may never make it." A very smart strategy, almost seems comical not to, haha!
@17utk4 жыл бұрын
Well in a sense he has continually toned down his own personality in his lyrics to make them more accessible and ultimately sell-able. The lyrics on this song are extremely personal and it's unlikely that the listener would see themselves in the lyrics the first time round the song plays. What works for room for squares is that the lyrics are simple enough (even if they're well woven) that the listener can connect with them and have the illusion that John is literally speaking to them. And over the years he has toned his lyrical "quirks" even more... to the point that songs like "new light" and "carry me away" are literally mirroring the lyrical elementary-ness of other contemporary pop acts. He is tryna fit in, but it just hides how good a songwriter he is (or atleast was at some point)
