Mayer was opening as an alternative for Khalid, Ed Sheeran asked him the possibility of him opening since the two are friends. Mayer was doing it as a favor as he is touring with Dead and Company.

i always feel like the guitar community has hyperfocused on the difficulty of neon that we forget how incredibly strong a song it is, even though the part is hard! that's the most mindblowing part of Mayer to me, he can show off, but it's never just for the sake of it. he'll take a song to the edge and back, and play incredible things regardless

And it was interesting to watch him try to grab the attention of a new crowd, he actually got a little more adventurous with the solos and freestyling than usual I'd say. Me and my wife had the pleasure to see this live. We were belting out every single one of his songs. What a great show! His appearance was very last minute and I think a majority of this audience was very young and weren’t super familiar with his songs, but for those of us that are, it was an amazing set.

Although many of the people at the show were too young to know John Mayer’s music, I was also surprised at how many people were listening and at least trying to appreciate his music. I was there that night, and he was PHENOMENAL. Only problem was that this concert started at 6pm on a Friday night pre 4th of July weekend. It was way too early when he went on to perform. Nobody was ready for him at that point. Later in the evening when he came back out to callabo with Ed, he killed it and he was shown the Love and Respect that he deserved for sure.......

I do not know John Mayer, but it seems to me that during the mid 2000's he was simultaneously dealing with fame and commercial success pressures while still growing as a musician and experimenting with different compositional techniques and collaborative projects. So, I tend to give him a lot of slack for any perceived 'acting out' or stepping back from popular music creation.

Yes, it is generally easy for even me as an amateur to play the chords and even most of the guitar riffs (except Neon, which seems to vary anyway) but the impact of the performer also lies in the timbre of their voice and the variance in rhythm and melodic choice in the accompanying guitar.

Disclaimer: I like Ed Sheeran a lot; his style, his skills and the way he performs live are fantastic. JM's performance of Gravity here is an education in live guitar playing. He blends rhythm with melody and solos in the moment without a pedal in sight. I cannot fathom the skill involved in doing that while singing at the same time! The man is a master. Oh my. I had a ticket to see him in June 2004 in Auburn, WA. Right in the thick of the Heavier Things era. I didn’t get to go to the show due to, well, life and the surprises it throws in your face. Never got the chance to go again since then. Thank you for this

I've seen JM several times, and his recent solo concert! He is out of this world insanely musically gifted. To come to an ED concert, and John Mayer just walks in to open up, I would be full of emotions. I love love love JM so much! ❤❤❤

Ed Sheeran's music is mad popular and garnered world's attention to the billions, but John Mayer's songs make me be lost in a billion galaxies with such awe. Ed Sheeran's concert would be fun and entertaining as hell, but John Mayer concert would be extraordinary, breath-taking, reduced to tears of joy; appreciation and gratitude. John Mayer all the way!

Legend! It is kind of surreal to see Mayer opening for somebody else when it should be the other way around, He and his talent as the main act. Love Ed but you gotta respect royalty, and Ed knows it, that's why He asked John to open it up for him because He wanted to offer the best show, and when it comes to a guitar based show it can't get any better that this! Lucky people!
