What puts John on a whole different level is he can perfectly sing along with these extremely complex fingerstyle songs. I cannot begin to comprehend this mans talent. My favourite guitarist and singer.

Clapton says he's a genius and doesn't really know how damn good he is. Listen to the interview he gave from Central Park about his first-ever concert there. He was a kid.

Just heard about this Fingerpicking & went to simply hear John Mayer sing this Song STOP This Train (never heard it). Well, it simply HAS to be the saddest, or perhaps, most sentimental Song ever written. & most complicated Fingerpicking ever played. (& that Collings Guitar is simply Dreamy! ). Actually I never thought I liked John Mayer until I started really listening to his Guitar playing - wow. was I ever wrong! lol

Currently learning Stop This Train as a relatively new player. Played in high school for a couple years but just picked up the guitar again 6 years later. Took me two days to learn just the picking pattern. Now gotta somehow get the chords going. Really difficult for me but I enjoy playing it over and over and seeing the progression even as slow as it is.

You are such a great guitar teacher Paul. Your joy is high and it's fully contagious. 🎉You could literally be speaking gibberish and I would still follow. 😅 Your child-like reverie in sound discovery is so endearing. I do the same so it's easy to follow along. Your commentary with adjectives about different notes and their effect is very helpful! Thank you for soothing my soul while nudging me into the next level. When are you going to have an in-person guitar camp? You can literally turn all of your student into your orchestra of sound with guitar. It could be like the ultimate looping experience with live members. Wouldn't that be a blast? The human looping orchestra. Lol See, now I'm finding new inspiration. Lol

Great video! One question... what method do you use to learn these songs? The articulation is so accurate, is this from notation, tabs, aural skills, videos or a combination. Feel free to respond here, or even better as a video on how to go about learning songs. Thanks for making these videos, they are exquisite. ❤️🎸

utubedestroysmytime using your thumb on neon is almost impossible unless you have massive ape hands like Mayer. Most mere mortals have to cheat which actually makes it harder to play.

I agree. I always thought myself an at least fairly decent guitar player, and then you see/listen to people play songs like this that are some of my favorites (and then go home and try to learn them, even with tabs) and realize I can't even make it sound recognizable let alone fluid and smooth.

Jeremy Brewer i know! it sucks. I guess we have to keep practicing if we want to actually call ourselves guitarists

Jeremy Brewer if you couldn't even make it sound recognizable then... well, kind of sad no offense. But I'm at the stage where I learned stairway to Heaven and could play in fluently in 20 mins.. but with these it would take me like a week to get it down. I'm moderate

Been really meaning to get into John Mayer (after learning Neon) and some fingerstyle in general recently, and this video helped me do exactly both those things! Very well put together and excellent playing. Thank you, and keep up the good work. ^^
