Even today I don't think people really wrap their minds at exactly how high the level was that John was orbiting in during this time period. The John Mayer Trio straight up blues album was genuinely the greatest original blues album of my lifetime (I'm 38), and then dropped the undeniable masterpiece that is Continuum just months apart. And as if that wasn't enough, he put together the greatest live show album maybe ever, certainly since the Eagle did hell freezes over, when he dropped Where the Light Is. If that one concert was the greatest hits to a 40 year career, it would genuinely be a ground breaking achievement. But in reality, that's just what he released that year, and doing in all 3 formats (acoustic, Trio, then full band) was the only way to do it justice. Even the early hits he included were only a few years old at the time. Simply incredible. Doubt it'll be topped anytime soon, by anyone in any genre.

The fewer players he has up on the stage with him, the sparser the song arrangement, the better it is for this guy. He's good enough with guitar and vocal to carry just about any kind of trio, as he does here with great support from Mr. Jordan and Mr. Paladino. Just great, raw, natural sounds in time, in the pocket, and gutsy, soulful delivery....what's wrong with that?
@alexchng2 жыл бұрын
Haha it's funny you say that, because John has expressed, especially in recent years, that he prefers performing with a larger band, so that there's less work for him to do. That's probably one reason he didn't completely focus on the power trio thing throughout his career.

Koletti, There are many renditions of the song and it is up to the artist to create the classic in his own hand Ray did the same thing to many songs. I agree this is not the best rendition Mayer has done but it does passion and excellent instrumentals.

+Nickolai Siegfried I agree. This is terrible. And his neck is too long.
@frankspikes48675 жыл бұрын
@Koletti Pireaus I admire Ray Charles genius. But I like John Mayers version better. Music like other things in life is subjective to the listener. Furthermore as a black man growing up in urban norcal I felt the blues when my dog died. I felt the blues when my best friend moved away. I felt the blues when I lost my job. As a working musician I've studied the blues, and know it's origans. While it's roots are predominantly black, anybody can feel, and live the blues.
@Six3rdy2 жыл бұрын
@@davidmorris8053 I agree with you on the passion part...but are u SURE this ain't one of the best renditions? It sure feels like it is, with the rhythm section having a pocket so deep you can use it for a safety deposit box, and Mayer being....well .... Mayer. Lol. He even made the soulful but awkward vocals work to his advantage! It's to beautiful to not assume it's at least up there.
