This might be my favorite era of JM... by this point, he had truly become a master of the guitar... he found the perfect blend of BB, Clapton, Hendrix, Stevie, etc. while still keeping his own style. You want a reggae vibe, JM has got you... you want a blues vibe, JM will do it... you want a R&B/Jazz fusion, yup, he's got that too. Wait, does the record label want bubble gum acoustic pop? Yup, JM crushed that as well.

To me, this is just the true definition of virtuosic guitar playing. Shredding is impressive, but almost anyone can do that with enough practice. This, on the other hand, is having the *skill* to shred, but knowing how to hold back and only play what you *need* to play. Musicianship, particularly the blues, is as much about the space between notes as it is the notes themselves. John Mayer also uses more than one technique in every performance -- slapping, harmonics, finger picking, etc. to add even more depth and personality to his playing. It is a sight to behold....pure talent.
@brynevans29636 жыл бұрын

I think him, Lady Gaga and probably some others did the same thing. Its unfortunate, but music like blues/jazz just doesn't sell. Same with Gaga. Obviously I cant know this for sure, but I'd be willing to bet money they started out with pop because they wanted to make a living performing music and it was either pop or it be a weekend thing for the rest of their lives. Now that they've got a solid income flowing in, they can make the music they want to make and do what they want to do. It sucks.

Thank you very much for sharing this video! These days (2024) I often wonder where this experimentig and plyafull version of himself might be hidden and I do hope it will come back as its grown-up self …

Even among the greatest guitarists of all time, there are few who can perform both instrumentally and vocally simultaneously in the way that John does in this clip.

Although people will hate it when others say that John is one of the best guitarist out there, I definitely believe it to be true. Most guitar fanboys are focused of speed without meaning they don't appreciate the richness of meaning of John's style. He's not just a guitarist, he's an actual musician.

To all the Mayer haters. Yes his lyrics are written to sell albums to the teenie boppers. But this proves the man is a guitar god!!!

dont think he took after Clapton that much. more Hendrix and Vaughan i think. maybe thats just what ive listened through idk.
@phil324138 жыл бұрын
Yep. Clapton influenced him but not the degree that Hendrix, Vaughan, and BB did. My opinion obviously. Regardless, we're all winners because this is a great rendition of a spectacular tune.

Rich Giroux I don't think teens have ever listed to his music. College girls, yes - in the Room for Squares era, but no longer.

A god on the stage....and thousands of mortals watching him (and his two angels) perform miracles using his voice, that red guitar, and the collest shades in history.

He's channelling those old-school Shades like TC wore in the infamous tighty-whitey slide in Risky Business, arguably his first and best performance..

Gibson ES-335. Guitar has been around for over 50 years; a staple for jazz, blues, and rock players. I'm sure some country players have used them, too. They're great guitars; the semi-hollow body gives a rich acoustic resonance.
