I love how the lyrics very slowly expose that the song is about loss, and the subject of "You" is only brought up about a minute into it after spending time describing the color of loneliness. As the lyrics continue, we learn he has lost someone and now dwells in this color on a bed of grey, and the idea of "finding oneself" or "letting you go" takes on new meaning. He clearly misses the person but finds a beauty in the depths of this wild blue of loneliness. and in many ways feels like a sequel to New Light, who's lovelorn protagonist is wild for a woman he has never met but only chats with on phone apps daily but is always left hanging.

Great vibe to this song. Easy to forget that underneath the 'pop fluff' stuff, John is genuinely a formidable musician. I don't particularly 'love' everything he does, but I respect the hell out of him and, as a guitarist he has moments of sheer brilliance. At the risk of sounding a bit blunt, Mayer's catalog of work overall doesn't tend to make him out to be a "pop fluff" kinda guy. His first major album release (not counting his EP) was certainly more pop focused but everything after that (seven entire albums) has moved more in other directions. I guess what I am saying here is that we are well past the point where it is easy to forget that he is a formidable musician.
