I often think that McEnroe appears too far down on the list of all-time great mens tennis players, where he should rank higher. And mainly for the reasons you and the others posted here. His talents are of the type that one is born with, not taught. Su movimiento de servicio es uno de los más bellos y estéticos , y algo muy característico de su juego. John Patrick McEnroe nunca será olvidado, ha dejado una leyenda para la posteridad .

McEnroe serve from this angle is fascinating to watch. He hit it plenty hard as needed, but not 200 mph like today's bionic players. But he disguised it so well with that motion and then angled his serves so sharply or just came down the middle. Only player that I saw who could handle McEnroe's serve and hurt him with the return was Connors, who may still be considered having the greatest return of all time. McEnroe's serve against Connors' return was the most fascinating part of their matches, along with the fact that they hated each other personally.

We can see how tennis has changed over the years. John has still the technique for tennis back then. Now it’s way faster. The serve and volley option isn’t as done now because tennis has become so fast
@CC-gt3ro2 жыл бұрын
Wrong, it is because they don’t serve well. Mc enroe was serving displaced from the center so it can find better angles and he hides his service direction. The other player don’t know where he will place the ball. He is much more difficult to return that current players. I still believe with this complex service, and projection towards the net , slice or flat, you can go much more go easily to the net in good condition. It is just the player today don’t have the serve and movement technics to do it. You must project very fast to the net, as when you hit the serve you must be 1m in the courts and hace a great touch to direct where you want the ball. None of the player have this capabilities as mc enroe had. It is also very demanding physically. Also mc enroe hit the ball just when the ball goes up very early, so he can find angles and use the speed of the adversary. Nobody is doing that today. You must do these technics when you start to play very young and never try to change to play the current technics. Stick with the plan and i believe it would work.

@oberdot Жыл бұрын
You think he’s groundstrokes are better than what’s going on today? 😂😂
@ericfreeman579511 ай бұрын
@@oberdotPut into perspective, McEnroe's "weird" groundstrokes, hit with a ridiculously loose stringbed, gave the original topspinners, like Borg, Vilas, and Wilander, without mentioning the power baseliners like Lendl and Connors, absolute fits. He could redirect pace with ease, hitting the ball on the rise. Lendl said that McEnroe was the only player that could hit his half volleys with pace, making Lendl's life a living hell. So, considering the era when he played, his ground strokes were comparatively some of the best.

Years ago I met a guy in Jericho who strung rackets for McEnroe in his prime. A buddy of mine grew up playing tennis with this guy on Long Island so they were old friends and we stopped by his pro shop one afternoon. I was going on and on about what a huge Mac fan I was and the guy just nodded politely. He said nothing until I finally asked what McEnroe was like as a person. I've never forgotten his response: "Well, sorry to tell you, but... John is a weird guy -- he's just weird and he makes people uncomfortable."
@gibaudrac17 жыл бұрын
This is a very interesting story and something the media never want to talk about. Just as they always muted the microphone when Mac was playing. I remember being in Toronto for the semis of the Canadian open in 81 or 82 and Lendl was dominating. I will never forget what happened next. In a fit of rage Mac shouted at the ball girl "get off your a$$ give me the f*cking ball!" Everyone was shocked by the crudity and jeered him. The next time I saw Mac was the day after Lendl drubbed him at the French Open. I was catching a plane at Orly and he was in the checking area with and entourage of about a dozen people getting tickets. He was in a towering rage but I was too far away to hear what he was shouting about. There was a reason Lendl hated him as he insinuated in his 1986 Letterman interview, and I don't think it had to do with Macs tennis style.

Even if I could remember his name or the name of the stringing shop, I would hesitate to share it because the comment was made privately. Maybe he was a bad person with an axe to grind or maybe he was just an average Joe whose encounters with McEnroe revealed the same personality quirks in a social setting that we saw in competitive play. People can decide for themselves or disregard the story entirely. I am not a Mac hater by the way. He is a tennis genius and one of my favorite players of all time. But the story stayed with me so I thought it was worth sharing.

This is a polite way of saying that Mcenroe is a dick. He is. It's not just a public persona. He grew up living a very myopic life and probably started with a prickly personality. There are a lot of tennis players like this, but he is the extreme. Socially stunted from years of just doing one thing and being insulated from real life (Serena Williams). Roddick seems very high strung and abrasive. Agassi has little social grace (hit for Haiti fiasco).
