I agree. I really enjoyed seeing him contain and outwit more powerful oppenents through superior skill rather than just athleticism. Brilliant to watch. I have always wondered if he would have won more slams if he had played as well again as he had in 84 . My hunch is that he certainly would have beaten Becker in 85 at Wimbledon and probably Lendl at the US Open. Maybe the game moved on after that?

This tournament, although from the ‘84 season was actually played in January ‘85. McEnroe had just switched clothes’ sponsor to Nike starting with this, the 1984 Masters. It is also notable that the force necessary to break a composite graphite racquet was insane! Yet Mac tore one here like breaking a piece of cardboard!

He violently smashed his racket on the ground at the end of the previous point. That is why the racket broke on the serve. 5:38. You can even see him looking at it right before the serve, checking to see if he broke it, which he soon found out he did.

Former tennis player John McEnroe won a total of 155 ATP titles, 77 in ATP Tour singles, 77 in men's doubles, and 1 in mixed doubles (not counted as ATP title). He won 25 singles titles on the ATP Champions tour. He won seven Grand Slam singles titles. He also won a record eight year end championship titles overall, the Masters championships three times, and the WCT Finals, a record five times. His career singles match record was 875-198 (81.55%). He posted the best single-season match record (for a male player) in the Open Era with win-loss record: 82-3 (96.5%) set in 1984 and has the best carpet court career match winning percentage: 84.18% (411-65) of any player. McEnroe was the second male player to reach 3 consecutive Grand Slams finals in a calendar year in 1984 since Rod Laver reached all four grand slams finals in 1969 in open era. According to the ATP website, McEnroe had the edge in career matches on Jimmy Connors (20-14), Stefan Edberg (7-6), Mats Wilander (7-6), Michael Chang (4-1), Ilie Năstase (4-2), and Pat Cash (3-1). McEnroe was even with Björn Borg (7-7), Andre Agassi (2-2), and Michael Stich (1-1), but trailed against Pete Sampras (0-3), Goran Ivanišević (2-4), Boris Becker (2-8), Guillermo Vilas (5-6), Jim Courier (1-2), and Ivan Lendl (15-21). McEnroe won 12 of his last 14 matches with Connors, beginning with the 1983 Cincinnati tournament. Edberg won his last 5 matches with McEnroe, beginning with the 1989 tournament in Tokyo. McEnroe won 4 of his last 5 matches with Vilas, beginning with the 1981 tournament in Boca Raton, Florida. Lastly, Lendl won 11 of his last 12 matches with McEnroe, beginning with the 1985 US

So much history here. It is the period of racquet technology changes. It's the second year that McEnroe is using his Dunlop Max 200G, and Jarryd still hasn't made the jump to graphite. It's McEnroe's best season ever. The young ones that grew up with Federer and his magic must watch and see McEnroe's magic and speed here. That first point is the kind you see in those videos where Fed has made an impossible play. Jarryd was part of a generation of swedish players, fathered by Bjorn Borg, that dominated a great part of the tour in the 80s, that included other greats like Mats Wilander and Stefan Edberg. Jarryd's forehand had a lot of topspin, but with a straight, almost pendulum backswing (like McEnroe). This was typical with heavier racquets. Serve and volley was more present in the 80s, although baseline counterpunching with heavy topspin was also very popular. Wilander was perhaps it's greatest representative. I miss that tennis.

This was actually played in early 85 rather than late 84. Up until 1985, the Australian Open was played December of each year and the masters tournament for the previous year was played in January of the following year. In 1986 they swapped positions in the calendar, and the Australian Open wasn't held at all as a result.
@TheMightySandow2 жыл бұрын
However Järryds racquet was a quite stiff wood/graphite composite and played more like a modern racquet than the shape of the head suggests.
@chocolatetownforever75372 ай бұрын
I grew up at the tail end of wood, and watch it to this day, but Ill always feel that eras that gave players a legit chance to win with a serve and volley, made for better watching. I also feel like theres just too much equipment and power out there. This era was very fair. Enough power to win from the baseline, but also not too much that kept a serve and volleyer from being able to get to the net to be offensive.
@th82573 жыл бұрын

McEnroe was incredibly gifted and completely different to Lendl in playing style. Worth noting that were they playing, back then, on courts as slow as they are today McEnroe would not have been competitive. Faster courts are needed if we ever want to see smaller attacking players like him again in the future.
@kevinbrianfahy Жыл бұрын
"Would not have been competitive"? LMAO 🤣😂
@MW-od5wp Жыл бұрын
McEnroe, in my view, is one of the most talented players we have ever seen. But he would not win any slams on the current slow courts. That is not a criticism of him. Tennis authorities are to blame for effectively sideling smaller attacking players with great hands.
@kevinbrianfahy Жыл бұрын
@@MW-od5wp Okay good to know you're a fan and not a troll, however I think "not competitive" is vastly different from "wouldn't win a slam." In addition, your not even including racket technology in your assessment, which is equally as big a factor as court surface when it comes to the changes between era's. So I just feel you painted a tremendously innaccurate picture. You're saying faster courts are needed when in fact it was the change in racket technology that led to slower surfaces being developed. Same thing with blaming tennis authorities, since their decision was because people wanted longer points than the 90's bang-bang tennis provided (due to the change in racket technology).
@MW-od5wp Жыл бұрын
@@kevinbrianfahy You are right that courts were slowed due to shorter rallies, BUT at the same time string tech improved vastly, drastically improving service returns. The combination of these factors has completely killed serve and volley. On these courts, with current strings Lendl would wipe the floor with McEnroe, and I am saying that still believing McEnroe was a better player. Interestingly when Sampras played an exhibition game with wooden rackets he said the serve speed was little different but the return of serve was significantly easier. I WANT to see McEnroe type players again; ones who can outwit more powerful opponents by rushing them. Won't happen on these courts sadly.
@kevinbrianfahy Жыл бұрын
@@MW-od5wp Nope. The tech and court changes do not equate to Lendl wiping the floor with McEnroe by any stretch of the imagination. You're suddenly bringing up string technology as if you did not say that slower courts make McEnroe not competitive. I even had to help you with your own argument and remind you about rackets so you could say "Oh yeah strings too!" String technology is yet a third component in the changes that have taken place with poly becoming the norm in the 2000's following Kuerten's success. You are simply not wrapping your head around the fact that great players of one era are competitive in any era. You've dropped the ball on this one.
@chuckcornelius1943 жыл бұрын
he never trained on court and off court as hard as Lendl, just coasting on his talent. maybe he could have got a couple more slams in 85+ if he had worked harder.
